Diffusion and prediction of Leishmaniasis in a large metropolitan area in Brazil with a Bayesian space-time model.

We present results from an analysis of human visceral Leishmaniasis cases based on public health records of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, from 1994 to 1997. The main emphasis in this study is on the development of a spatial statistical model to map and project the rates of visceral Leishmaniasis in Belo Horizonte. The model allows for space-time interaction and it is based on a hierarchical Bayesian approach. We assume that the underlying rates evolve in time according to a polynomial trend specific to each small area in the region. The parameters of these polynomials receive a spatial distribution

A stochastic model simulating the feeding-health-production complex in a dairy herd.

A dynamic, stochastic, and mechanistic Monte Carlo model, simulating a dairy herd with focus on the feeding-health-production complex is presented. By specifying biological parameters at cow level and a management strategy at herd level, the model can simulate the technical and economic consequences of scenarios at herd level. The representation of the feeding-health-production complex is aimed to be sufficiently detailed, to include relationships likely to cause significant herd effects, and to be sufficiently simple to enable a feasible parameterization of the model and interpretation of the

Molecular dynamics simulation of anesthetic-phospholipid bilayer interactions.

To probe the hypothesis of a lipid-mediated mechanism of general anesthetic action on a molecular level, and to help elucidate the nature of the interactions of bioactive compounds with membranes, the effects of trichloroethylene (TCE), an inhalational general anesthetic, on a dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC) lipid bilayer have been investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations at 37 degrees C and 1 atm and the results compared with 31P and 2H NMR experimental studies (Ref 1). The model used included a single TCE molecule embedded in a lipid bilayer consisting of 24 DOPC molecules and

Voxel-Level Dosimetry for Combined Iodine 131 Radiopharmaceutical Therapy and External Beam Radiation Therapy Treatment Paradigms for Head and Neck Cancer.

PURPOSE: Targeted radiopharmaceutical therapy (RPT) in combination with external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) shows promise as a method to increase tumor control and mitigate potential high-grade toxicities associated with re-treatment for patients with recurrent head and neck cancer. This work establishes a patient-specific dosimetry framework that combines Monte Carlo-based dosimetry from the 2 radiation modalities at the voxel level using deformable image registration (DIR) and radiobiological constructs for patients enrolled in a phase 1 clinical trial combining EBRT and RPT. METHODS AND

Application of AQbD principles on the development of a stability-indicating HPLC method for the determination of acetylsalicylic acid, ramipril and atorvastatin in their fixed-dose polypills.

In this study, an analytical quality by design approach was proposed for the development of a stability-indicating HPLC method for the determination of acetylsalicylic acid, ramipril and atorvastatin in their fixed-dose polypills. The structures, retention and the forced degradation studies of each drug served as useful prior knowledge. Using risk assessment and screen design, three critical method parameters (buffer pH, gradient slope and % CH3OH initial content) were defined and optimized using a Box-Behnken response surface methodology. The stability-indicating features of the proposed meth

Quantifying parameter uncertainty in a three-parameter model of speech and voice adaptation using early- and late-window pitch-shift responsesa).

Sensorimotor adaptation within the Directions Into Velocities of Articulators (DIVA) framework (including DIVA, LaDIVA, and SimpleDIVA) is governed by auditory feedback, somatosensory feedback, and feedforward mechanisms. SimpleDIVA provides a reduced three-parameter formulation that enables direct estimation of auditory and somatosensory feedback control gains, as well as the learning rate of the feedforward command from trial-by-trial adaptation data; however, it provides point estimates without uncertainty information. This limitation becomes critical for subject-specific analyses based on

Monte Carlo study on fetal dose assessment for carbon beam craniospinal irradiation during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy may be suggested for pregnant cancer patients when treatment cannot be delayed, with careful targeting to minimize fetal dose. Considering that a successful case for a pregnant patient treated with proton beam craniospinal irradiation (CSI) was reported, carbon therapy can be also considered applicable for the CSI treatment to pregnant patients. PURPOSE: We investigated fetal organ doses from carbon beam CSI during pregnancy by performing Monte Carlo dose calculations. METHODS: We employed the high-quality pregnant female phantom series developed by University of Flo

Monte carlo assessment of advanced shielding materials for space-efficient radiotherapy vault design.

BACKGROUND: Conventional radiotherapy vault shielding typically employs 2 to 3 meters of ordinary concrete, consistent with NCRP Report 151 reference data. While NCRP 151 specifies dose-based design goals rather than mandating particular materials, the practical default of concrete results in vault footprints of 150 to 200 m2 per linac, which can constrain treatment capacity within fixed departmental space. Recent advances in high-density composite shielding materials offer the potential to achieve the same dose-based design goals with reduced barrier thickness. PURPOSE: In this study, we inv

Photon specific absorbed fractions for the ICRP family of mesh-type reference computational phantoms.

Objective. To provide photon specific absorbed fractions (SAFs), which quantify the fraction of emitted energy absorbed in target tissues and form the basis for internal dose coefficients, using mesh-type reference computational phantoms (MRCPs).Approach.The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) has recently published MRCPs in Publications 145 and 156 for adult and pediatric reference individuals, respectively. These phantoms supersede the voxel-type reference computational phantoms used in ICRP Publications 133 and 155, overcoming key limitations such as the inability to e

Probabilistic dietary exposure assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and its associated disease burden in Singapore.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are process contaminants with dietary exposure as a key route into the human body. Findings from the Singapore Total Diet Study revealed that higher levels of PAHs were found in food categories such as nuts and seeds, sauces and condiments, fruiting vegetables as well as fungi and seaweed. The choice of cooking method may influence the PAH levels in food such as fish and seafood products where stir-frying was associated with higher PAHs levels than boiling and steaming. Monte Carlo simulation was applied in the PAHs probabilistic exposure assessment usin

Towards novel methods of dosimetry in pediatric and neonatal head computed tomography: Comparative study using two novel and cost effective fabricated in-house phantoms.

PURPOSE: Accurate radiation dose assessment in pediatric computed tomography (CT) is essential due to children's higher radiosensitivity and anatomical differences from adults. Standard homogeneous adult phantoms often underestimate pediatric doses, especially in head imaging. This study performs a comparative dosimetry using two novel in-house developed heterogeneous head phantoms. METHODS: Tissue-equivalent materials (TEMs) for cranial bone, brain matter, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and tumor/mass were formulated using Monte Carlo (GATE) simulations, XMuDat calculations, and Hounsfield unit

Dynamics of infectious disease transmission in heterogeneous networks considering population interaction mechanism.

In public health emergencies, infectious disease transmission often varies significantly across populations. To investigate population heterogeneity and interaction mechanisms in cross-population transmission dynamics, we develop a community-based SIR (susceptible-infectious-removed) compartmental model applicable to multiple populations. This model is grounded in a heterogeneous network that incorporates both intra-population structural differences and inter-population coupling. Considering the structural characteristics and interactions between the service-providing and the served population

Evaluation of the compound biological effectiveness of L-4-boronophenylalanine in bone Marrow: A study combining biological experiments with Monte Carlo dose calculation.

PURPOSE: The compound biological effectiveness (CBE) is a key parameter for converting a boron dose into a bioequivalent X-ray dose. As a hematopoietic organ, the bone marrow is highly radiosensitive. However, the CBE value of L-4-boronophenylalanine (BPA) for bone marrow remains undetermined, which may lead to an underestimation of the radiation dose to bone marrow during boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: BNCT dose was simulated using the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport Code System Monte Carlo code. A one-compartment model was applied to calculate the concentratio

A numerical study on the effect of laser therapy against port-wine stain by administering artificial red blood cells.

Port-wine stain (PWS) is a congenital vascular malformation commonly treated with pulsed dye laser (PDL) therapy. PDL exploits selective photothermolysis, in which hemoglobin in red blood cells (RBCs) absorbs laser energy, generating localized heat that induces endothelial damage. However, in microvessels, axial RBC migration creates a hemoglobin-depleted cell-free layer along the vessel walls, reducing laser efficacy. Hemoglobin vesicles (HbVs)—nano-sized artificial RBCs—distribute uniformly within these layers, offering the potential to enhance hemoglobin distribution and laser absorption. T

Mapping intratumoral heterogeneity through PET-derived washout and deep learning after proton therapy.

The distribution of produced isotopes during proton therapy can be imaged with Positron Emission Tomography (PET) to verify dose delivery. However, biological washout, driven by tissue-dependent processes such as perfusion and cellular metabolism, reduces PET signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and limits quantitative analysis. In this work, we propose an uncertainty-aware deep learning framework to improve the estimation of washout parameters in post-proton therapy PET, not only enabling accurate correction for washout effects, but also mapping intratumoral heterogeneity as a surrogate marker of tumo

Influence of apple pomace and asparaginase on acrylamide levels in cookies and behavior during simulated gastric digestion: risk assessment perspectives.

Cookies are widely consumed baked products; however, their contribution to dietary acrylamide (ACR) intake raises increasing health concerns. This study investigated the effects of apple pomace addition and asparaginase treatment on ACR levels in cookies, the fate of ACR during simulated gastric digestion using the INFOGEST semi-dynamic model, and the associated health risks of ACR exposure from cookie consumption. Risk assessment was conducted for adults (18-65 years) and children (3-10 years) using Monte Carlo simulation. Three formulations were evaluated: a control cookie, a cookie in which

Optimizing age-structured sampling for estimating the seroconversion rate in malaria seroepidemiology: a simulation study.

Seroprevalence and the seroconversion rate (SCR) are key indicators of malaria burden, particularly in low-transmission settings. Optimizing age-based sampling may improve the efficiency and precision of SCR estimation, but this has not been systematically explored in malaria seroepidemiology. We employed Monte Carlo simulations to identify optimal age-based sampling strategies under varying assumptions by modifying (1) SCR, (2) seroreversion rate (SRR), and (3) whether SRR was known or unknown. Using the reverse catalytic model and its extension, we considered two transmission scenarios: a st

Efficient sequential Bayesian inference for state-space epidemic models using ensemble data assimilation.

Estimating latent epidemic states and model parameters from partially observed, noisy data remains a major challenge in infectious disease modeling. State-space formulations provide a coherent probabilistic framework for such inference, yet fully Bayesian estimation is often computationally prohibitive because evaluating the observed-data likelihood requires integration over a latent trajectory. The Sequential Monte Carlo squared (SMC2) algorithm offers a principled approach for joint state and parameter inference, combining an outer SMC sampler over parameters with an inner particle filter th

Validation of a Monte Carlo-based dose calculation engine including the 1.5 T magnetic field for independent dose-check in MRgRT.

PURPOSE: Adaptive MRgRT by 1.5 T MR-linac requires independent verification of the plan-of-the-day by the primary TPS (MonacoTM) (M). Here we validated a Monte Carlo-based dose-check including the magnetostatic field, SciMoCaTM (S). METHODS: M and S were validated first in water, by comparison with commissioning-dosimetry. PDD(2x2cm2) through a lung(air)-equivalent virtual-slab was then calculated. Clinical validation retrospectively included 161 SBRT plans, from five patients per-site: Pelvic-Nodes, Prostate, Liver, Pancreas, and Lungs. S-minus-M percentage differences (Δ%) were computed for

A new GPU-based Monte Carlo code for helium ion therapy.

PURPOSE: This work presents an effort to extend the capabilities of the previously introduced GPU-based Monte Carlo code ARCHER for helium ion therapy. METHODS: ARCHER performs helium ion transport simulations in voxelized geometry, covering kinetic energy levels up to 220 MeV/u. The physical processes are modeled using a class II condensed-history algorithm, considering ionization, energy straggling, multiple scattering, and elastic and inelastic nuclear interactions. A new nuclear-event-repeat algorithm is proposed to generate inelastic nuclear reaction products. Secondary protons, deuteron
