Using a slit-lamp biomicroscope mounted Cochet-Bonnet aesthesiometer, the touch sensitivity of the eyelid margin and palpebral conjunctiva was determined for both upper and lower lids in 30 subjects. Thresholds for the occlusal surface of the lid, the marginal angle and the middle of the tarsus were measured centrally. This report concerns a ten-month-old girl in whom ophthalmic examination showed a large tumor arising in the ciliary body with such rapid progression that enucleation was necessary. The Lowe syndrome (LS), or oculocerebrorenal syndrome, has been studied using DNA-based linkage analysis, and the findings have been correlated with the result of a thorough ophthalmologic examination. The human lens nucleus has always been described as a homogeneous part of the lens, and if any distinct opacities are found, these are considered to be congenital. However, in lenses with nuclear cataract, both of senile type and those induced by hyperbaric oxygen, we have found relatively transparent vacuoles in the nucleus of similar appearance as cortical vacuoles. An epidemiological survey for onchocerciasis was carried out in the San Vicente Pacaya area of Guatemala. A total of 2,153 inhabitants were examined by a single skin snip, and 664 (30.8%) were positive for microfilariae. A photo slit lamp was used to obtain color, specular reflex, high magnification photographs of the corneal endothelium of subjects ranging in age from 3 to 88 years. RESULTS: The first patient had a retained soft contact lens on an opaque cornea for 4 years with brownish black multiple colonies on the soft contact lens and culture grew Bipolaris spp. The second patient was on therapeutic contact lens for pseudophakic bullous keratopathy for 4 months and developed a brownish colonization of contact lens with unidentified dematiaceous fungi. Both the patients had conjunctivitis but did not develop fungal keratitis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the relationship between endothelial cell density (ECD) and mean corneal diameter (MCD) in eyes with uveal coloboma associated with microcornea.
METHODS: Corneal endothelial cell imaging was performed using specular microscopy on 22 eyes of 18 subjects diagnosed with uveal coloboma associated with microcornea.
