Large joints are composed of two closely linked cartilages: articular cartilage (AC; rich in type II collagen, a well-studied tissue) and fibrocartilaginous enthesis (FE; rich in type I collagen, common disorder sites of enthesopathy and sporting injuries, although receiving little attention). For many years, both cartilages were thought to be formed by chondrocytes, whereas tendon, which attaches to the humeral bone head, is primarily considered as a completely different connective tissue. In this study, we raised an unconventional hypothesis: tendon cells directly form FE via cell transdiffe

BACKGROUND: No clear guideline or solid evidence exists for peroneal tendon tears to determine when to repair, resect, or perform a tenodesis on the damaged tendon. The objective of this study was to analyze the mechanical behavior of cadaveric peroneal tendons artificially damaged and tested in a cyclic and failure mode. The hypothesis was that no failure would be observed in the cyclic phase.
METHODS: Eight cadaveric long leg specimens were tested on a specially designed frame. A longitudinal full thickness tendon defect was created, 3 cm in length, behind the tip of the fibula, compromisin

OBJECTIVE: To present the technique of arthroscopy-assisted anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction in children with complete ACL rupture.
INDICATIONS: The indications for surgery are intraligamentous ruptures of the ACL with persistent signs and symptoms due to instability in spite of a minimum 6-month trial with conservative management and reduction of sports activities. Other decision-making factors for surgery include secondary injuries to the menisci or limitation of daily activities due to the instability produced by the ACL rupture. The indication for surgical intervention has

BACKGROUND: Brachial plexus injuries cause a devastating loss of function in the arm. The aim of this study was to review the results of surgical treatment of patients with brachial plexus injuries.
METHODS: Forty-seven patients were reviewed. Five patients did not undergo surgery. Forty-two patients had exploration and 38 had primary surgery with neurolysis, nerve graft or neurotization or a combination. Four patients had other reconstructive surgery primarily. Secondary reconstructive surgery consisted of joint fusions and tendon transfers to enhance or replace the primary surgery.
RESULTS

The complex anatomy of the shoulder often impedes the orthopedic surgeon's evaluation and understanding of injuries to the shoulder joint, particularly the rotator cuff muscle-tendon complex. Arthroscopy, MRI, and digital data analysis are several techniques now at the surgeon's disposal. This article reviews the application of these techniques in the evaluation of rotator cuff injuries.

Climbing is a rapidly growing sport that subjects the fingers to intense mechanical stress, predisposing athletes to a wide spectrum of injuries beyond the well-recognized flexor pulley lesions. Non-pulley-related finger injuries, although often underrecognized, can impair performance, cause chronic pain, and lead to long-term complications such as osteoarthritis, cyst formation, or tendon rupture. These injuries involve flexor tendons, collateral ligaments, volar plates, joint capsules, extensor mechanisms, lumbrical muscles, epiphyseal growth plates in adolescents, digital nerves, and palmar

OBJECTIVE: To describe the MR imaging findings of acute and chronic rectus femoris origin (RFO) injuries.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of pelvic and hip MR imaging procedures was performed over a 4-year period for detection of cases with injuries to the RFO. Subjects were classified as having either acute or chronic symptoms. MR imaging studies, radiographs, CT scans, radiology reports, medical records, and operative notes were reviewed. Imaging analysis was directed to assess injuries affecting the direct and indirect heads of the RFO. Concurrent osseous, cartilaginous and m

Various complications after intramedullary (IM) nailing of the tibia have been reported, the most common of which are anterior knee pain and symptoms similar to patella tendonitis. Complete rupture of the patellar tendon after IM nailing of the tibia has been reported on 2 occasions, in conjunction with predisposing patient factors, such as systemic disease or a proud tibial nail. Patellar tendon ruptures are disabling injuries that can be technically difficult to repair because of the poor quality of remaining tendon tissue, quadriceps muscle atrophy and/or contracture, and scar-tissue format

OBJECTIVE: Flexor tendon repair by direct suture, providing tendon function and mechanical properties and allowing postoperative active exte … nsion in a dorsal wrist cast.
RESULTS: The clinical outcome studies after repair of zone II flexor tendon injuries using a multiple-strand suture technique describe 69-96% excellent and good results.

Extensor mechanism injuries of the hand are common in clinical practice and may lead to significant functional impairment. Understanding the complex anatomy and functional role of different extensor mechanism components in the fingers is critical for accurate imaging interpretation. We provide a brief overview of relevant anatomy and extensor zone injuries classification. Critical points for image acquisition optimization are included. Important imaging findings of extensor tendon injuries and their complications including mallet finger, swan neck and boutonniere deformities, and sagittal band…

Tendon-bone insertion (TBI) injuries, such as anterior cruciate ligament injury and rotator cuff injury, are the most common soft tissue injuries. In most situations, surgical tendon/ligament reconstruction is necessary for treating such injuries. However, a significant number of cases failed because healing of the enthesis occurs through scar tissue formation rather than the regeneration of transitional tissue. In recent years, the therapeutic potential of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) has been well documented in animal and clinical studies, such as chronic paraplegia, non-ischemic heart fail

BACKGROUND: The classic injury mechanism of a distal biceps brachii tendon rupture (DBBTR) is eccentric loading to the flexed elbow when the forearm is supinated.
PURPOSE: To determine alternative mechanisms of a DBBTR in powerlifting sports, particularly in deadlift competitions, with the use of YouTube videos.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study.
METHODS: A search on YouTube was performed using the search terms "distal biceps tendon rupture" and "distal biceps tendon injury" combined with "competition," "deadlift," and "powerlifting." The videos underwent an evaluation for accura

BACKGROUND: Calf muscle strain and Achilles tendon injuries are common in many sports. For the treatment of muscular and tendinous injuries, one of the newer approaches in sports medicine is capacitive-resistive electric transfer therapy. Our objective was to analyze this in vitro, using invasive temperature measurements in cadaveric specimens.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study designed with five fresh frozen cadavers (10 legs) were included in this study. Four interventions (capacitive and resistive modes; low- and high-power) was performed for 5 min each by a diathermy "T-Plus" device. Achil…

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate, using ultrasonography and the AOFAS (The American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society) score, changes in the peroneal tendons of patients with ankle fractures resulting from a supination-external rotation (SER) mechanism treated with either lateral or posterolateral plate fixation. METHODS: This retrospective observational study was conducted at a tertiary level III trauma center. Adult patients (> 18 years) with unilateral SER ankle fractures, a minimum follow-up of 1 year, no persistent symptoms, and fixation using a 1/3 tubular 3.5-mm locking plate (lateral or poster

BACKGROUND: Low-molecular-weight hydrolyzed collagen peptides are increasingly used as adjuncts in musculoskeletal medicine, but their clinical role in tendon and ligament injuries remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical evidence on oral or injectable hydrolyzed collagen peptides, or related low-molecular-weight peptide preparations, in tendon and ligament injuries and post-repair/reconstruction settings.
METHODS: A systematic review with narrative synthesis was conducted using PubMed and a mirrored Scopus strategy through 17 March 2026. Eligible studies were human clinical studies
