Pregnancy incidence in Norwegian red cows using nonreturn to estrus, rectal palpation, pregnancy-associated glycoproteins, and progesterone.

The objectives of the study were to estimate pregnancy incidence and calving rate after first artificial insemination (AI) in Norwegian Red cows undergoing spontaneous estrus, to assess the relationship between pregnancy and management factors at herd or cow level, to evaluate differences between 60-d nonreturn rate (NRR60d) and pregnancy incidence, and to compare the accuracy of pregnancy diagnosis by rectal palpation and plasma pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAG) analysis supported by progesterone measurements. In total, 829 animals (n = 229 heifers, 234 first-lactation, 173 second-lact

Prevalence of potentially pathogenic bacteria as genital pathogens in dairy cattle.

Bacteria on the genital mucosa have been studied less in healthy, non-puerperal cows than in cows with puerperal endometritis. We have thus analysed bacteria in swabs from the vagina and cervix of post-puerperal cattle (n = 644). Out of the animals, 6.8% had aborted within the last 12 months, 2.6% and 11.6% showed signs of vaginitis and endometritis, respectively. In 17.2% of cervical swabs pathogenic gram-positive and in 11.5% pathogenic gram-negative bacteria were found. Arcanobacterium pyogenes was isolated from 41.3% of cows with endometritis and from 3.5% without endometritis (p < 0.05).

Vitamin A toxicity and vitamin E deficiency in a rabbit colony.

Vitamin A toxicosis and vitamin E deficiency was diagnosed in a commercial rabbit-breeding colony and was associated with reproductive abnormalities, abortions, and poor survivability of kits in the breeding colony. Paresis and muscular dystrophy were noted in juvenile rabbits. Another group of New Zealand White rabbits from the same commercial colony was used to assess the effect of vitamin E-based therapy on clinical signs, reproduction, and vitamin A and E serum and liver levels. Blood samples were taken before and after dietary changes and vitamin E therapy. Serum vitamin E remained low af

Responses of cattle to two dosages of Brucella abortus strain RB51: serology, clearance and efficacy.

A new brucellosis vaccine, Brucella abortus strain RB51 (SRB51), is currently recommended for use as a calfhood vaccine in the US at dosages between 1 x 10(10)and 3.4 x 10(10)colony-forming units (CFU). The purpose of the study reported here was to compare responses to minimal and maximal recommended SRB51 dosages. Eighteen heifer calves were vaccinated subcutaneously with 1.6 x 10(10)CFU of SRB51, 3.2 x 10(10)CFU of SRB51, or saline (n = 6 per treatment). The vaccine strain was recovered from the superficial cervical lymph node 14 weeks after vaccination in two of six animals that received 1.

Detection of Neospora sp. from infected bovine tissues by PCR and probe hybridization.

Neospora sp. can cause fetal abortion or neurological disease in congenitally infected calves. Latent tissue stages in infected cows may contribute to vertical transmission of Neospora sp. from dam to offspring in multiple pregnancies. In this investigation, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Neospora-specific assay were employed to detect Neospora sp. by amplification of nuclear small-subunit rRNA gene sequences in infected cattle tissues. Tissues from 11 cattle, including 6 experimentally and 2 naturally infected cows, 1 naturally infected newborn calf, and 2 uninfected control cows, we

Classification of Arcobacter species isolated from aborted pig fetuses and sows with reproductive problems in Brazil.

Seventeen field isolates of Arcobacter species were recovered in Brazil from aborted porcine fetal livers (n = 3), kidneys (n = 2), and thoracic fluid (n = 1). Arcobacter species were also recovered from uterine and oviductal tissues (n = 5) and a placenta from sows with reproductive problems. These isolates were initially presumed to be Arcobacter cryaerophilus on the basis of aerobic growth at 30 degree C, indoxyl acetate hydrolysis, catalase and oxidase reactions, growth on MacConkey agar, sensitivity to 3.5% sodium chloride, and susceptibility to nalidixic acid (40 mg/ml). The isolates wer

Behaviour of a high-temperature-requirement A (HtrA) deletion mutant of Brucella abortus in goats.

Previous studies have shown that high-temperature-requirement A (HtrA) mutants of Brucella abortus are more sensitive to oxidative killing in vitro, are less able to survive in cultured murine macrophages and are attenuated in BALB/c mice. To measure the effect of an HtrA mutation on the virulence of B abortus in ruminants, pregnant goats in late gestation were exposed to infection by the conjunctival route with B abortus 2308 or an isogenic htrA mutant, PHE1. Infection with either 2308 or PHE1 resulted in abortion, but the serological responses to infection were consistent with 2308 but varia

[Prospective study of Listeria in humans and animals].

During 1967 to 1985, three cases of listeriosis were reported in Algeria; at that time Listeria monocytogenes caused several thousand cases of meningitis and sepsis in the world. In order to determine the frequency and bacteriologic characteristics of strain isolated in Algeria, a prospective investigation was carried from 1985 to 1989 in humans and animals samples. Sensitivity tests to antibiotics (MIC) point out that all isolates strains are resistant to cephalosporins (first and third generation), but are susceptible to Ampicillin and Gentamicin which ought to constitute the treatment basis

Observations on transplacental infection with bluetongue virus in sheep.

Twenty-four ewes were inoculated with 1 of 2 strains of bluetongue virus type 4 at 40, 60, or 80 days of gestation. Two ewes aborted, 2 ewes died, and 1 was killed during the experiment, but their fetuses were recovered. At term, 2 mummified fetuses, 4 dead lambs, and 17 clinically healthy lambs were produced by 12 sheep, and the remaining 7 sheep were barren. Porencephaly and cerebellar dysgenesis were found in term lambs born to sheep inoculated at 40 and 60 days of gestation. Radiographic examination of 12 fetuses showed developmental ages far less than their chronologic age; 8 fetuses had

Rift Valley fever virus vaccine lacking the NSs and NSm genes is safe, nonteratogenic, and confers protection from viremia, pyrexia, and abortion following challenge in adult and pregnant sheep.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is a mosquito-borne human and veterinary pathogen causing large outbreaks of severe disease throughout Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Safe and effective vaccines are critically needed, especially those that can be used in a targeted one-health approach to prevent both livestock and human disease. We report here on the safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy of the ΔNSs-ΔNSm recombinant RVFV (rRVFV) vaccine (which lacks the NSs and NSm virulence factors) in a total of 41 sheep, including 29 timed-pregnant ewes. This vaccine was proven safe and immunogenic for adul

Rapid vertical flow technique for the highly sensitive detection of Brucella antibodies with Prussian blue nanoparticle labeling and nanozyme-catalyzed signal amplification.

Brucellosis is a chronic infectious disease caused by Brucella, which is characterized by inflammation of reproductive organs and fetal membranes, abortion, infertility, and local inflammatory lesions of various tissues. Due to the widespread prevalence and spread of brucellosis, it has not only caused huge losses to animal husbandry, but also brought serious impacts on human health and safety. Therefore, rapid and accurate diagnosis is of great significance for the effective control of brucellosis. Therefore, we have developed a rapid vertical flow technique (RVFT) using Prussian blue nanopar

First report of seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in sheep in Pomerania, northern Poland.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Toxoplasmosis is parasitic disease which has economic relevance for both veterinary and human medicine. In sheep, toxoplasmosis is a major cause of abortion and can thus cause reproductive problems. The current study aimed to determine the occurrence of anti-Toxoplasma gondii IgG antibodies in sheep from 13 districts of northern Poland and thereby obtain actual data about T. gondii seroprevalence in this population of animals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Blood samples from 1,646 animals from 99 herds were collected, and an in-house enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELI

Q fever and toxoplasmosis in South African livestock and wildlife: a retrospective study on seropositivity, sporadic abortion, and stillbirth cases in livestock caused by Coxiella burnetii.

BACKGROUND: Q fever and toxoplasmosis are economically important zoonoses as they cause considerable losses in livestock (cattle, sheep and goats) and wildlife (antelopes, giraffes, lions, and cheetahs) through reproductive disorders such as abortions and stillbirths. Q fever and toxoplasmosis testing in South Africa is conducted by the Agricultural Research Council-Onderstepoort Veterinary Research (ARC-OVR). However, both zoonoses are understudied and not monitored in South Africa as they are not considered controlled or notifiable diseases in the Animal Disease Act 35 of 1984. A retrospecti

Prohibitin 2 is Involved in Parkin-Mediated Mitophagy in Urothelial Cells of Cattle Infected with Bovine Papillomavirus.

Prohibitin 2 (PHB2), an inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM) protein, has recently been identified as a novel receptor involved in parkin-mediated mitophagy. In the field of veterinary medicine, the role of PHB2 in parkin-mediated mitophagy was described, for the first time, in urothelial cells of cattle, naturally infected with bovine papillomavirus (BPV). The BPV2 and BPV13 E5 oncoprotein, responsible for abortive infections in urothelial cells, was detected by RT-PCR. Severe ultrastructural abnormalities of the inner mitochondrial membrane were detected using transmission electron microscopy.
