Cryotherapy was used to treat 516 patients with various degrees of dysplasia and carcinoma in situ over a 7-year period. Seventy-one percent of patients had either severe dysplasia or carcinoma in situ. In 88% of the patients treated, a single treatment session was successful in eradicating the lesion. Treatment was defined as successful when cytologic and colposcopic findings were negative 1 year after treatment. Five percent of patients were lost to follow-up. The criteria for selection of patients and possible causes of treatment failure are discussed.

A case of malignant hyperthermia in a Black boy is presented. He developed this condition during repair of a cleft palate, with halothane as the triggering agent. The importance of the high incidence of malignant hyperthermia in patients with certain musculoskeletal abnormalities is stressed. Despite a cool and well air-conditioned theatre, the patient's temperature was 41 degree C when the condition was suspected. At that stage general muscle rigidity was present. The patient was successfully treated with procainamide, sodium bicarbonate and hydrocortisone; surface cooling (with ice packs) wa

For local congelation of pathologically altered sections of the tissue the design of an earlier devised cryosprayer has been improved. The newly constructed model is convenient in handling, reliable in operation, has low weight and overall dimensions and ensures good visual view of the operation field. The new model of the cryosprayer is recommended for use in the stomatological practice, for treatment precarcinous affections of the buccal mucosa and dental pulp.

Thermal ablation (TA), including microwave ablation, radiofrequency ablation, and cryoablation, is increasingly used as a surgical alternative for T1a renal cell carcinoma (RCC), particularly in lesions measuring ≤ 3 cm. In this review, we aimed to summarize current evidence on the efficacy, safety, and long-term outcomes of TA in RCC and to explore future directions in this evolving field. A comprehensive review of the literature was conducted, focusing on the indications for TA, considering tumor size and location, patient age, and comorbidity status (assessed using Charlson Comorbidity Inde

BACKGROUND: Fibroadenoma is the most common benign breast lesion found on core needle biopsies. Surgical excision is the standard of care for these lesions. This retrospective study aims to evaluate the safety and efficacy of liquid nitrogen-based cryoablation in treating multiple fibroadenomas, including large lesions.
METHODS: A liquid nitrogen-based cryoablation system was used to treat histologically confirmed benign fibroadenomas under ultrasound guidance at Premier Med Healthcare, Training, and Research Institute between 2017 and 2022. The number and times of freeze-thaw-freeze treatmen

PURPOSE: Focal cryoablation is an effective treatment for localized and recurrent prostate cancer, offering reduced risks of side effects. However, treatment success depends on physician experience, as intraprocedural adjustments are required due to needle deflection. To determine whether an image-guided adaptive treatment strategy could reduce the required years of experience, we developed Image-guided Adaptive Cryotherapy (ImAC). We hypothesize that ImAC can be successfully implemented in MRI-guided cryotherapy to optimize needle placement. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a retrospecti

BACKGROUND: Cryoballoon ablation is a safe and efficient rhythm control strategy in patients suffering from atrial fibrillation (AF). Diagnosis-to-ablation time (DAT) has been defined as a predictor of ablation outcomes, but the impact of early ablation among non-paroxysmal AF is unclear. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of early cryoballoon ablation on AF recurrence in a prospective single-center cohort of non-paroxysmal AF patients.
METHODS: Patients with non-paroxysmal AF admitted to the Second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University until July 2024 and underwent first-time c

Local ablation therapy, encompassing radiofrequency ablation (RFA), microwave ablation, and cryoablation, has emerged as a crucial strategy for managing small hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs), complementing liver resection and transplantation. This review delves into the clinical significance of tumor size, location, and biology in guiding treatment decisions for HCCs undergoing local ablation therapy, with a focus on tumors smaller than 3 cm. Tumor size significantly influences treatment outcomes, with larger tumors associated with poorer local tumor control due to challenges in creating suff

BACKGROUND: Transbronchial cryobiopsy (TBCB) provides larger tissue samples and improved sampling depth, but its role in diagnosing acute cellular rejection (ACR) in lung transplant patients is unclear due to limitations in existing studies. To address this, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy and safety of TBCB.
METHODS: A thorough literature review was conducted to evaluate TBCB in post-lung transplant surveillance, assessing the quality of studies and conducting a meta-analysis comparing diagnostic yields of TBCB and transbronchial forceps biopsy (TB

BACKGROUND: Cryoballoon ablation is currently the gold standard technique for single-shot pulmonary vein isolation (PVI). Pulsed field ablation (PFA) has recently emerged as an interesting nonthermal alternative energy for PVI. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the safety and long-term efficacy of PVI using the pentaspline PFA catheter in comparison to cryoballoon ablation.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Between January 2021 and December 2022, we included all consecutive patients of our center in whom a first PVI-only procedure was performed using PFA or cryoballoon. The choice of the energy was

BACKGROUND: Cryoablation to achieve pulmonary vein (PV) isolation has become one of the standard approaches for atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation. The Arctic Front series cryoballoon and Achieve circular mapping catheter (Medtronic) inherently possess design defects that have been associated with unfavorite clinical outcomes. Lately, a new cryoablation system (Nordica Cryoablation System, Synaptic Medical) was developed with improved design of the cryoballoon and circular mapping catheter to address the inadequacies of current cryoablation technology. An animal study was conducted to test the

Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is the gold standard in the diagnosis of mediastinal and hilar lesions. For certain purposes, such as the diagnosis and subtyping of lymphoproliferative disorders or molecular pathology, a larger amount of intact sample material is required. EBUS cryobiopsy is a new and efficient tool for this purpose. As it is a new approach, there is still no standardised workflow. In this review, we present the procedure step by step as it is performed at the Ruhrlandklinik in Essen.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of computed tomography (CT) guided percutaneous cryoablation (CA) for the management of lung metastases in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC).
METHODS: Retrospective analysis was performed on 38 mCRC patients with lung metastases, who underwent CT-guided percutaneous CA at our center from May 1, 2020 to November 1, 2021. The technical success rate, 1-year local control (LC) rate, recurrence-free survival (RFS) and treatment-related complications were analyzed.
RESULTS: The CA procedure was successfully performed in all patient

BACKGROUND: Posterior wall (PW) isolation is an important adjunctive ablation target in patients with non-paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF). Traditionally performed with point-by-point radiofrequency (RF) ablation, PW isolation has also been performed with different cryoballoon technologies. We aimed at assessing the feasibility of PW isolation with the novel RF balloon catheter Heliostar™ (Biosense Webster, CA, USA).
METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 32 consecutive patients with persistent AF scheduled for first-time ablation with the Heliostar™ device. Procedural data were compared with
