Do Injured Adolescent Athletes and Their Parents Agree on the Athletes' Level of Psychologic and Physical Functioning?

BACKGROUND: Although a parent's perception of his or her child's physical and emotional functioning may influence the course of the child's medical care, including access to care and decisions regarding treatment options, no studies have investigated whether the perceptions of a parent are concordant with that of an adolescent diagnosed with a sports-related orthopaedic injury. Identifying and understanding the potential discordance in coping and emotional distress within the athlete adolescent-parent dyads are important, because this discordance may have negative effects on adolescents' well-

Parent psychological wellbeing in a single-family room versus an open bay neonatal intensive care unit.

BACKGROUND: Studies of parents' psychological well-being in single-family rooms in neonatal intensive care units have shown conflicting results. AIMS: To compare emotional distress in the form of depression, anxiety, stress and attachment scores among parents of very preterm infants cared for in a single-family rooms unit vs an open bay unit. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective survey design. SUBJECT: Parents (132) of 77 infants born at 28 0/7-32 0/7 weeks of gestation in the two units. OUTCOME MEASURES: Duration of parental presence was recorded. Scores for depression (The Edinburgh Postnatal Depre

Paternal overweight is associated with increased breast cancer risk in daughters in a mouse model.

While many studies have shown that maternal weight and nutrition in pregnancy affects offspring's breast cancer risk, no studies have investigated the impact of paternal body weight on daughters' risk of this disease. Here, we show that diet-induced paternal overweight around the time of conception can epigenetically reprogram father's germ-line and modulate their daughters' birth weight and likelihood of developing breast cancer, using a mouse model. Increased body weight was associated with changes in the miRNA expression profile in paternal sperm. Daughters of overweight fathers had higher

HIV transmission behaviors, detectable HIV-RNA and curable STI prevalence among Ugandan men with HIV with reproductive goals, with and without infertility experiences.

Many men with HIV (MWH) want children. MWH with unmet reproductive goals may prioritize conception over preventing HIV/STI transmission. Therefore, we evaluated whether MWH with unmet versus met reproductive goals were more likely to have detectable HIV-RNA or STIs, and explored socio-structural factors (e.g., HIV/infertility stigma, gender dynamics) conceptualized to influence this association. We recruited 100 MWH in Uganda who reported condomless sex with intent to conceive, half had/had not fathered a child in the last year, defined as "met"/"unmet" reproductive goals. A questionnaire asse

Robot-assisted vasovasostomy for vasectomy reversal: long-term outcomes from a high-volume tertiary centre.

Vasectomy reversal is a technically demanding microsurgical procedure aimed at restoring fertility. Robot-assisted vasovasostomy (RAVV) has been introduced to enhance precision and ergonomics, but robust clinical data remain limited. We report perioperative, functional, and fertility outcomes from one of the largest single-centre series of RAVV and explore patient-related factors associated with postoperative patency. We retrospectively analysed prospectively maintained data from men undergoing bilateral RAVV at a tertiary referral centre between January 2008 and September 2025. All patients h

Post-COVID symptoms after SARS-CoV-2 omicron infection and the effect of booster vaccination: A population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The impact of vaccination on the type and risk of specific post-COVID symptoms after Omicron infection is not clear. We aimed to investigate the excess risk and patterns of 22 symptoms 3-5 months after Omicron infection, comparing uninfected and infected subjects with and without recent booster vaccination. METHODS: We conducted a population-based prospective study based on four questionnaire-based cohorts linked to national health registries. Our study includes female and male participants aged 11-80 years from The Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study, The Norwegian I

Exploring the influence of socio-cultural factors and environmental resources on the health related quality of life of children and adolescents after congenital heart disease surgery: parental perspectives from a low middle income country.

BACKGROUND: Health related quality of life (HRQOL) is an important indicator of long-term well-being, influenced by environmental factors such as family, culture, societal norms and available resources. This study aimed to explore parental perspectives on the influence of socio-cultural factors and environmental resources on the HRQOL of children and adolescents after congenital heart disease (CHD) surgery. METHODS: Using a descriptive, qualitative design, semi-structured interviews of children/adolescents who had CHD surgery in this low-middle income country (LMIC) were collected between Jul

Hereditary factors and exposures in childhood associated with adult chronic rhinosinusitis-the RHINE study.

BACKGROUND: The main aim of this study was to determine whether hereditary factors and exposures during childhood are associated with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) in adulthood. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPLE: The Respiratory Health In Northern Europe (RHINE) study is a random population sample collected from seven centres in five countries during the period of 1990-1994. Data on CRS from the third follow-up in 2020 (RHINE 4) were examined in relation to previously reported hereditary factors and exposures during childhood. RESULTS: In total, 7,686 subjects were included, with a mean age of 51.5 ± 7.1

Circulating 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Levels During Pregnancy and Risk of Congenital Heart Diseases: Multivariable and Mendelian Randomization Analyses Using 3 Birth Cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Identifying modifiable risk factors for congenital heart disease (CHD) is important for prevention. Previous studies have reported associations between 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) in pregnancy and CHD in the offspring. However, these studies contain important methodological limitations. We aimed to investigate 25(OH)D levels during pregnancy in relation to offspring risk of CHD using both multivariable regression (MVR) analysis and Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. METHODS: Data from the ALSPAC (Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children), BiB (Born in Bradford), and M

Gestational weight gain and postpartum weight retention: What is the role of perinatal antidepressant use?

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the association between perinatal antidepressant use and gestational weight gain (GWG) and postpartum weight retention (PPWR). METHODS: We used data from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa), linked to the Medical Birth Registry of Norway (MBRN) and the Norwegian Prescribed Drug Registry (LMR). We included singleton, live birth pregnancies with pre-pregnancy depression/anxiety. Prenatal and perinatal antidepressant use trajectories were constructed using longitudinal k-means clustering. GWG and PPWR at 6/18 months postpartum were calcula

Maternal Characteristics in Natural and Medically Assisted Reproduction Dizygotic Twin Pregnancies.

Previous studies have shown that mothers of naturally conceived dizygotic (DZ) twins tend to be taller, older, and smoke more than mothers of naturally conceived monozygotic (MZ) twin and mothers of singletons. Here, we investigate whether mothers of naturally conceived DZ twins differ from mothers who conceived their DZ twins after medically assisted reproduction (MAR) in eight maternal traits related to fertility based on observational survey data. We include data from 33,648 mothers from the Netherlands Twin Register (NTR) and 1660 mothers of twins from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Chil

Identification of Children of Parents With Mental Illness: A Necessity to Provide Relevant Support.

Background: The main objective of this study was to identify and describe core life circumstances of children with mentally ill parents (COPMI) and their parents. Knowledge about COPMI aged 0-17 years is necessary, as assessment of the risk and protective factors in their lives provide solid background for preventive interventions. Methods: Participants (N = 422) were parents of minor children (N = 589) receiving treatment in the clinic for psychiatric illness and substance abuse at the University Hospital of Northern Norway. Data was drawn from electronic patient journals. Results: A total of

Nutritional impact on Immunological maturation during Childhood in relation to the Environment (NICE): a prospective birth cohort in northern Sweden.

INTRODUCTION: Prenatal and neonatal environmental factors, such as nutrition, microbes and toxicants, may affect health throughout life. Many diseases, such as allergy and impaired child development, may be programmed already in utero or during early infancy. Birth cohorts are important tools to study associations between early life exposure and disease risk. Here, we describe the study protocol of the prospective birth cohort, 'Nutritional impact on Immunological maturation during Childhood in relation to the Environment' (NICE). The primary aim of the NICE cohort is to clarify the effect of

Mother-to-child transmitted WT1 splice-site mutation is responsible for distinct glomerular diseases.

Mutations in the Wilms' tumor suppressor gene (WT1) are linked with Denys-Drash syndrome (DDS), a rare childhood disease characterized by diffuse mesangial sclerosis and renal failure of early onset, XY pseudohermaphroditism, and high risk of Wilms' tumor. KTS (lysine-threonine-serine) splice site mutations in WT1 intron 9 have been described in patients with Frasier syndrome, another rare syndrome defined by focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), XY pseudohermaphroditism, and frequent occurrence of gonadoblastoma. Cases of Frasier syndrome raise the question whether splice site mutati

"Footprints in the Bathroom": The Role of Spirituality in Patient Diagnosis.

Lucy is a 12-year-old Latina whose mother brought her to the pediatric clinic for help with her anxiety symptoms, "hearing voices," and episodes of "spacing out." Lucy did not cry at birth secondary to vocal cord paralysis and still has the tracheostomy performed at a few days of life. In addition to her neonatal intensive care unit stay, she has been hospitalized for pneumonia. Her mother says she is "sickly" and has a weak immune system due to her asthma symptoms. Lucy also experiences somatic complaints related to gastroesophageal reflux and constipation.Lucy is described as being "in anoth

Father absence and adolescent development: a review of the literature.

Rapid social change has seen increasing numbers of woman-headed single-parent families, meaning that more and more children are growing up without a father resident in the home. Father absence is a term that is not well defined and much of the literature does not discriminate between father absence due to death, parental relationship discord or other causes. This article presents a critical review of the extant literature on father absence, particularly as it relates to adolescent well-being and development. Findings from the literature point to the importance of father presence in children's

Family size, childhood infections and atopic diseases. The Aberdeen WHEASE Group.

BACKGROUND: This study addresses the causes of the increases in childhood asthma and allergic disease. On the basis of an observed inverse relationship between family size and allergic disease or atopy, it has been proposed that a fall in common childhood infections may have been responsible for the rise in asthma. This study was undertaken to investigate the relationships between family size and reported allergic disease and to test the hypothesis that an inverse relationship between the two is a consequence of childhood infections. METHODS: Data had been obtained in a 1964 cross sectional s
