PURPOSE: To determine the incidence, timing, and clinical significance of long-bone fractures in children with Ewing sarcoma family of tumors (ESFT).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 93 consecutive cases of ESFT of the long bones seen at a single institution over the course of a 37-year period.

BACKGROUND: Massive bone allografts have been used for limb salvage in patients undergoing bone tumor resections as an alternative to endoprostheses. Although several studies on massive allograft reconstructions for bone tumors reported that most complications occur in the first 3 years after surgery, there are no long-term reports on complications to substantiate this contention. Although a long-stemmed cemented hemiarthroplasty is frequently recommended for oncologic lesions of proximal femur, we have observed an alarming number of spontaneous stem fractures. The purpose of this retrospective study was to identify the associated risk factors for stem fractures in a study cohort of 60 (61 prostheses) during 1983-2007. At a mean follow-up of 41 months, 4/61 (6.6%) stems had fractured after a mean of 36 (12-92) months after surgery. All failed implants were Osteonics Omnifit (4/27; 14.8%) and multivariate analysis did not show any correlation with other studied variables

Recently, there has been renewed interest in the role of tumor stem cells (TSCs) in tumorigenesis, chemoresistance, and relapse of malignant tumors including osteosarcoma. The potential exists to improve osteosarcoma treatment through characterization of TSCs and identification of therapeutic targets. Using transcriptome, proteome, immunophenotyping for cell-surface markers, and bioinformatic analyses, heterogeneous expression of previously reported TSC or osteosarcoma markers, such as CD133, nestin, POU5F1 (OCT3/4), NANOG, SOX2, and aldehyde dehydrogenase, among others, was observed in vitro.

Between March 1983 and September 1988, 22 patients with non-metastatic malignant fibrous histiocytoma MFH of bone of the extremities were treated with two regimens of neo-adjuvant chemotherapy successively activated. Preoperatively, the patients received moderate doses of methotrexate and cisplatinum-Regimen 1- or high dose methotrexate, cisplatinum and adriamycin-Regimen 2. Cisplatinum was delivered intraarteriously, the other drugs intravenously. Limb salvage surgery was performed in 20 patients, and 2 patients were amputated. We report a case of a 77-year-old male with pancreatic cancer and thrombocytopenia who presented with acute stroke symptoms and underwent successful endovascular thrombectomy. During femoral artery closure, an 8-F Angio-Seal device fractured, leaving catheter fragments in the right femoral artery, confirmed on imaging. Device analysis revealed oxidation-induced brittleness, leading to sheath fragmentation. This case highlights a rare complication of Angio-Seal devices, suggesting potential material vulnerabilities that warrant further investigation.

BACKGROUND: Endoprosthetic reconstruction after oncologic resection of bone tumors requires stable fixation between the prosthesis and residual host bone. Compressive osseointegration has been developed as an alternative to traditional stemmed implants to address the challenges and complications of achieving this fixation. Sufficient time has now passed from the advent of compressive implants to allow for an assessment of the intermediate-term and long-term results of this form of fixation.
