Associations between the kynurenine pathway and the brain in patients with major depressive disorder-A systematic review of neuroimaging studies.

Previous studies have indicated that an imbalance in the kynurenine (KYN) pathway is an important pathophysiological mechanism of depression. Several studies have reported that an imbalance in the KYN pathway and its metabolites is associated with abnormalities in cerebral structure and function in depression, but the available evidence has been inconsistent. In this review, we systematically reviewed and integrated the findings concerning the associations between the KYN pathway and the brain in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). A total of 22 neuroimaging studies were ultimately

[Network analyses in neuroimaging studies].

Neurons are anatomically and physiologically connected to each other, and these connections are involved in various neuronal functions. Multiple important neural networks involved in neurodegenerative diseases can be detected using network analyses in functional neuroimaging. First, the basic methods and theories of voxel-based network analyses, such as principal component analysis, independent component analysis, and seed-based analysis, are described. Disease- and symptom-specific brain networks have been identified using glucose metabolism images in patients with Parkinson's disease. These …

Contribution of neuroimaging to the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia.

The aim of this study was to review, summarize and analyze recent findings relevant to the contribution of neuroimaging to the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD). Computerized tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provide accurate demonstration of the location and rate of progression of atrophic changes affecting the brain in AD and the different types of vascular lesions observed in mixed dementias and in pure VaD. Quantification of cortical thickness allows early diagnosis and rate of progression from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to dementia. W

Mapping auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia using functional magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Perceptions of speech in the absence of an auditory stimulus (auditory verbal hallucinations) are a cardinal feature of schizophrenia. Functional neuroimaging provides a powerful means of measuring neural activity during auditory hallucinations, but the results from previous studies have been inconsistent. This may reflect the acquisition of small numbers of images in each subject and the confounding effects of patients actively signaling when hallucinations occur. METHODS: We examined 6 patients with schizophrenia who were experiencing frequent auditory hallucinations, using a no…

Biomarkers for cognitive impairment in alpha-synucleinopathies: an overview of systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

Cognitive impairment (CI) is common in α-synucleinopathies, i.e., Parkinson's disease, Lewy bodies dementia, and multiple system atrophy. We summarize data from systematic reviews/meta-analyses on neuroimaging, neurophysiology, biofluid and genetic diagnostic/prognostic biomarkers of CI in α-synucleinopathies. Diagnostic biomarkers include atrophy/functional neuroimaging brain changes, abnormal cortical amyloid and tau deposition, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarkers, cortical rhythm slowing, reduced cortical cholinergic and glutamatergic and increased cortical GAB…

Advanced Neuromonitoring Modalities on the Horizon: Detection and Management of Acute Brain Injury in Children.

Timely detection and monitoring of acute brain injury in children is essential to mitigate causes of injury and prevent secondary insults. Increasing survival in critically ill children has emphasized the importance of neuroprotective management strategies for long-term quality of life. In emergent and critical care settings, traditional neuroimaging modalities, such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), remain frontline diagnostic techniques to detect acute brain injury. Although detection of structural and anatomical abnormalities remains crucial, advanced MRI sequence

Portable, low-field magnetic resonance imaging enables highly accessible and dynamic bedside evaluation of ischemic stroke.

Brain imaging is essential to the clinical management of patients with ischemic stroke. Timely and accessible neuroimaging, however, can be limited in clinical stroke pathways. Here, portable magnetic resonance imaging (pMRI) acquired at very low magnetic field strength (0.064 T) is used to obtain actionable bedside neuroimaging for 50 confirmed patients with ischemic stroke. Low-field pMRI detected infarcts in 45 (90%) patients across cortical, subcortical, and cerebellar structures. Lesions as small as 4 mm were captured. Infarcts appeared as hyperintense regions on T2-weighted, fluid-attenu

The Spectrum of Neuroimaging Findings on CT and MRI in Adults With COVID-19.

Neurologic involvement is well-recognized in COVID-19. This article reviews the neuroimaging manifestations of COVID-19 on CT and MRI, presenting cases from the New York City metropolitan region encountered by the authors during the first surge of the pandemic. The most common neuroimaging manifestations are acute infarcts with large clot burden and intracranial hemorrhage, including microhemorrhages. However, a wide range of additional imaging patterns occur, including leukoencephalopathy, global hypoxic injury, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, cytotoxic lesions of the corpus callosum, o

Brain metabolic connectome classify mild cognitive impairment into Alzheimer's dementia.

Identifying whether patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are converting to Alzheimer's disease (AD) is clinically important, but there are still controversies and doubts. We aimed to develop a novel connectome approach which could accurately and precisely predict whether MCI patients are converted to AD using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET). In our study, FDG-PET images were acquired from 84 patients with MCI who converted to AD within 48 months and 109 patients with MCI without conversion within 48 months from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiat

Tackling the 'dyslexia paradox': reading brain and behavior for early markers of developmental dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia is an unexplained inability to acquire accurate or fluent reading that affects approximately 5-17% of children. Dyslexia is associated with structural and functional alterations in various brain regions that support reading. Neuroimaging studies in infants and pre-reading children suggest that these alterations predate reading instruction and reading failure, supporting the hypothesis that variant function in dyslexia susceptibility genes lead to atypical neural migration and/or axonal growth during early, most likely in utero, brain development. Yet, dyslexia is typical

Structural and Functional Imaging Correlates of Visual Hallucinations in Parkinson's Disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review recent structural and functional MRI studies of visual hallucinations in Parkinson's disease. RECENT FINDINGS: Previously, neuroimaging had shown inconsistent findings in patients with Parkinson's hallucinations, especially in studies examining grey matter volume. However, recent advances in structural and functional MRI techniques allow better estimates of structural connections, as well as the direction of connectivity in functional MRI. These provide more sensitive measures of changes in structural connectivity and allow models of the changes in directional fun

Brain-targeted Therapies for Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Mechanisms and Strategies.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is increasingly recognized as a complex disorder of the gut-brain axis, characterized by bidirectional dysregulation between the enteric and central nervous systems. Advanced neuroimaging has revealed that IBS patients exhibit distinct structural and functional brain alterations, particularly in regions governing pain processing, emotional regulation, and salience detection, such as the Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC), prefrontal cortex (PFC), and insula. These maladaptive neuroplastic changes are driven by mechanisms including visceral hypersensitivity, central

Optimizing Surgical Planning for Epilepsy Patients With Multimodal Neuroimaging and Neurophysiology Integration: A Case Study.

Current preoperative evaluation of epilepsy can be challenging because of the lack of a comprehensive view of the network's dysfunctions. To demonstrate the utility of our multimodal neurophysiology and neuroimaging integration approach in the presurgical evaluation, we present a proof-of-concept for using this approach in a patient with nonlesional frontal lobe epilepsy who underwent two resective surgeries to achieve seizure control. We conducted a post-hoc investigation using four neuroimaging and neurophysiology modalities: diffusion tensor imaging, resting-state functional MRI, and stereo
