Electroencephalographic markers of brain development during sevoflurane anaesthesia in children up to 3 years old.

BACKGROUND: General anaesthetics generate spatially defined brain oscillations in the EEG that relate fundamentally to neural-circuit architecture. Few studies detailing the neural-circuit activity of general anaesthesia in children have been described. The study aim was to identify age-related changes in EEG characteristics that mirror different stages of early human brain development during sevoflurane anaesthesia. METHODS: Multichannel EEG recordings were performed in 91 children aged 0-3 yr undergoing elective surgery. We mapped spatial power and coherence over the frontal, parietal, temp

Simultaneous lateral interbody fusion and pedicle screws (SLIPS) with CT-guided navigation.

OBJECTIVES: The advent of minimally invasive, percutaneous techniques for the placement of pedicle screws has led to the evolution of a popular treatment paradigm: anterior or lateral interbody fusions followed by posterior percutaneous pedicle screw placement. We present the operative technique for anterior-to-psoas lateral interbody fusion (ATP-LIF) with simultaneous posterior lumbar percutaneous pedicle screw fixation using intraoperative CT-guided navigation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This technique capitalizes both on the more oblique approach used in the ATP-LIF procedure, as well as the an

The anatomy of the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve in Koreans.

BACKGROUND: Preservation of the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (EBSLN) during thyroidectomy is important because its injury may lead to frequent occurrence of vocal fatigue and the inability to perform superenergetic phonation. Most studies on the anatomy of EBSLN have been performed in Western countries and, thus, have some limitations in their application to Koreans. We explored the anatomy of EBSLNs using intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) in Korean adults. METHODS: Between August 2011 and December 2011, 50 patients underwent thyroidectomy at Korea University, Anam Hosp

Personalized assessment of high-definition slow-oscillatory transcranial direct current stimulation (so-tDCS) in older adults with sleep and subjective cognitive complaints: A study protocol for a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is increasingly recognized as an early and potentially modifiable stage in the trajectory of neurodegenerative diseases. In older adults with SCD, untreated sleep disturbances may accelerate the neurodegenerative process, potentially via mechanisms involving amyloid-beta accumulation, and contribute to more rapid cognitive deterioration. Currently, non-pharmacological treatment options that concurrently manage SCD and sleep disturbances remain scarce. High-definition slow-oscillatory transcranial direct current stimulation (so-tDCS) is an emerging

The Neurophysiology of Cybersickness: A Systematic Review of Neuromarkers, Neurostimulation, and Reporting Practices in Virtual Reality.

Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is a prevalent adverse response to virtual reality (VR) exposure, and its assessment has relied primarily on retrospective subjective questionnaires that cannot support continuous monitoring or real-time detection. This PRISMA-guided systematic review synthesizes 92 studies on the neurophysiology of VIMS in VR, retrieved from PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus through March 2025, spanning electroencephalography, functional near-infrared spectroscopy, and non-invasive neurostimulation. The EEG literature converges on increased low-frequency (delta and the

An Emerging Role of Artificial Intelligence in Pediatric Neuroanesthesia.

Anesthesia for pediatric neurosurgery represents a highly complex and challenging field, characterized by age-dependent physiological variability, heterogeneous patient populations, and the critical need to protect the developing central nervous system. Conventional clinical approaches often rely on adult-derived data, which may inadequately reflect the distinct neurophysiological and hemodynamic characteristics of neonates, infants and children. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have enabled the integration of multimodal perioperative data, including physiologic signals and neur

Motor-Related EEG Analysis Using a Pole Tracking Approach.

This study introduces an alternative approach to electroencephalography (EEG) time-frequency analysis based on time-varying autoregressive (TV-AR) models in a cascade configuration to independently monitor key EEG spectral components. The method is evaluated for its neurophysiological interpretation and effectiveness in motor-related brain-computer interface (BCI) applications. Specifically, we assess the ability of the tracked EEG poles to discriminate between rest, movement execution (ME) and movement imagination (MI) in healthy subjects, as well as movement attempts (MA) in individuals with

Left Peripheral Nerve Palsy after Left Anterior Temporal Lobectomy for Mesial Temporal Sclerosis.

We report a rare case of delayed peripheral facial paralysis following left anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) for mesial temporal sclerosis in a 58-year-old woman with a long-standing history of seizures. Preoperative evaluation confirmed left temporal sclerosis as the epileptogenic focus. Surgery with neurophysiologic monitoring was performed, and initial postoperative assessment revealed no facial deficits. However, 4 days later, the patient developed left-sided peripheral facial paralysis (House-Brackmann grade 4), which improved after a 10-day course of oral corticosteroids. This case unde

Anesthetic Management and Neuromonitoring in a Patient with Very Long-Chain Acyl-Coenzyme A Dehydrogenase Deficiency Undergoing Scoliosis Surgery: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Patients with very long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (VLCADD) are prone to hypoglycemia and clinical decompensation when metabolic demands of the body are not met. We present a pediatric patient with VLCADD who underwent a posterior spinal fusion for scoliosis requiring intraoperative neurophysiology monitoring. Challenges included minimization of perioperative metabolic stressors and careful selection of anesthetic agents since propofol-based total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) was contraindicated due to its high fatty acid content. This case is unique due to the sequential use of

Cortical Spreading Depolarizations and Clinically Measured Scalp EEG Activity After Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage and Traumatic Brain Injury.

BACKGROUND: Spreading depolarizations (SDs) are associated with worse outcome following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and traumatic brain injury (TBI), but gold standard detection requires electrocorticography with a subdural strip electrode. Electroencephalography (EEG) ictal-interictal continuum abnormalities are associated with poor outcomes after TBI and with both delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) and poor outcomes after SAH. We examined rates of SD detection in patients with SAH and TBI with intraparenchymal and subdural strip electrodes and assessed which continuous EEG (cEEG) measures wer
