High spin-orbit torque efficiency induced by engineering spin absorption for fully electric-driven magnetization switching.

Realizing spin-orbit torque (SOT)-driven magnetization switching offers promising opportunities for the advancement of next-generation spintronics. However, the relatively low charge-spin conversion efficiency accompanied by an ultrahigh critical switching current density (Jc) remains a significant obstacle to the further development of SOT-based storage elements. Herein, spin absorption engineering at the ferromagnet/nonmagnet interface is firstly proposed to achieve high SOT efficiency in Pt/Co/Ir trilayers. The Jc value was significantly decreased to 7.5 × 106 A cm-2, achieving a maximum re

Fiber-optic bolometers with high-temperature tolerance and reduced time constants for fusion plasma diagnostics.

Fiber-optic bolometers (FOBs) designed for plasma radiation measurement in magnetically confined fusion environments have been previously developed and tested at the DIII-D tokamak. These FOBs utilize a silicon Fabry-Perot interferometer at the fiber tip for temperature measurement and a gold disk as a radiation absorber. This paper presents recent advancements in the development of FOBs with reduced cooling time constants and enhanced temperature tolerance. We also demonstrate high-temperature operation and report findings from irradiation tests. By incorporating a copper sensor holder as a t

pH-Dependent Packing Mode Variations and Chirality Inversion in Short Peptide Self-Assembly.

Precise control of structures and morphologies in peptide self-assembly has been challenging. We report the self-assembly of amphiphilic peptides I3H, designed with a modular structure featuring three consecutive isoleucine residues as a hydrophobic tail and a C-terminal histidine-based hydrophilic headgroup. Microscopic, neutron scattering, and spectroscopic techniques demonstrate that the designed peptides self-assemble into β-sheet nanofibrils, with their helix handedness exhibiting subtle pH-dependent inversion. pH titration, NMR, and molecular dynamics simulations reveal the underlying me

Hydride Ion Conductors with Polyanionic Complex Anions.

Hydride ion (H-)-conducting solid-state materials have lately received great attention for advanced electrochemical energy storage/conversion systems, including hydride ion-based batteries, electrolysis, and fuel cells. However, the highly reactive nature of hydride ions has posed challenges in diversifying anion systems, which are crucial for designing their effective transport. This study reports perovskite-type hydride ion conductors, Sr1-yNayLiH3-x-y(BH4)x (0 ≤ x ≤ 1 and 0 ≤ y ≤ 0.1), employing polyanionic borohydride (BH4-) as the anions in the structure. Structural characterization indic

Precise Distal B-H Bond Activation of nido-Carboranes by Copper Catalysis: Synthesis of Benzene Bioisosteres from Boron Clusters.

The exploration of innovative molecular scaffolds offers an exciting opportunity to venture into a previously unexplored chemical space. Boron clusters, such as carboranes, exhibit three-dimensional (3D) cage structures for exopolyhedral derivatization along multiple directions. This makes carboranes hold great potential as bioisosteric mimetics of benzene. However, the lack of efficient synthetic strategies for the regioselective functionalization of up to ten B-H sites has considerably hampered the broad application of carboranes as benzene bioisosteres. Herein, we report a novel reaction pa

From regular solutions to microemulsions.

We address the structure of homogeneous mixtures of equal volumes of water and oil rendered miscible by the addition of amphiphilic molecules. Specifically, we study the pathway from regular ternary solutions to structured microemulsions with increasing amphiphilic chain length, i.e., increasing i and j for alkyl polyglycol ether surfactants (CiEj) from C3E0 (i.e., propanol) to C5E2, using contrast variation small angle neutron scattering (SANS). The bulk-contrast SANS pattern of the symmetric system water-cyclohexane-(2-propanol/1-propanol) with nearly horizontal tie-lines matches Ornstein-Ze

Ab initio study of hydrogen and helium diffusion in Be2Ti.

Interstitial hydrogen and helium diffusion in the Be2Ti compound was investigated via ab initio methods. Under certain conditions, this phase can coexist within the desired Be12Ti compound, which is a candidate neutron multiplier material for breeder blankets in the DEMO reactor. The Be2Ti lattice contains three stable interstitial hydrogen sites and one stable interstitial helium site, all exhibiting lower solution energies than those found in pure beryllium. This indicates a higher solubility of both hydrogen and helium in Be2Ti. Diffusion barriers between adjacent hydrogen/helium interstiti

Modulating phase segregation during spin-casting of fullerene-based polymer solar-cell thin films upon minor addition of a high-boiling co-solvent.

The impact of additives on the nanoscale structures of spin-cast polymer composite films, particularly in polymer solar cells, is a topic of significant interest. This study focuses on the blend film comprising poly(thieno[3,4-b]thio-phene-alt-benzodi-thio-phene) (PTB7) and [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM), exploring how additives like 1,8-di-iodo-octane (DIO) influence the film structures spin-cast from chloro-benzene solution. Combined results of specular X-ray and neutron reflectivity, grazing-incidence small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS and GIWAXS), and X-ray

Room-Temperature Ferromagnetism with Strong Spin-Orbit Coupling Achieved in CaRuO3 Interfacial Phase via Magnetic Proximity Effect.

Recently, theoretical and experimental research predicted that ferromagnets with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) could serve as spin sources with dramatically enhanced spin-orbit torque (SOT) efficiency due to the combination of spin Hall effect and anomalous Hall effect (AHE), presenting potential advantages over conventional nonmagnetic heavy metals. However, materials with a strong SOC and room-temperature ferromagnetism are rare. Here, we report on a ferromagnetic (FM) interfacial phase with Curie temperature exceeding 300 K in the heavy transition-metal oxide CaRuO3, in proximity to La0.

Side Chain Dynamics of Poly(norbornene)-g-Poly(propylene oxide) Bottlebrush Polymers.

The segmental dynamics of the side chains of poly(norbornene)-g-poly(propylene oxide) (PNB-g-PPO) bottlebrush polymer in comparison to PPO is studied by quasi-elastic neutron scattering. Having experimental time and length scale information simultaneously allows to extract spatial information in addition to relaxation time. Tethering one end of the PPO side chain onto a stiff PNB backbone slows down the segmental relaxation, over the length and time scales investigated. The power law dependence of the relaxation time on the momentum transfer, Q, indicates a more heterogeneous relaxation patter

Beyond the standard model of solubilization: Non-ionic surfactants induce collapse of lipid vesicles into rippled bilamellar nanodiscs.

HYPOTHESIS: Although solubilization of lipid membranes has been studied extensively, questions remain regarding the structural pathways and metastable structures involved. This study investigated whether the non-ionic detergent Triton X-100 follows the classical solubilization pathway or if intermediate nanostructures are formed. EXPERIMENTS: Small angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS/SANS) was used in combination with transmission electron cryo-microscopy and cryo-tomography to deduce the structure of mixtures of 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) vesicles and Triton X-10

Nitridation effect on lithium iron phosphate cathode for rechargeable batteries.

A novel oxynitride Li0.94FePO3.84N0.16 with olivine structure (space group Pnma, no. 62) has been synthesized by heating a parent LiFePO4 precursor obtained by citrate chemistry in flowing ammonia at 650 °C. The polycrystalline sample has been characterized by X-ray and neutron powder diffraction (NPD), elemental and thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical measurements. Based on the existing contrast between the scattering lengths of the N and O species, a Rietveld refinement of the structure from NPD data revealed that N preferentially occupies the O2 position

Unconventional Spin State Driven Spontaneous Magnetization in a Praseodymium Iron Antimonide.

Consolidating a microscopic understanding of magnetic properties is crucial for a rational design of magnetic materials with tailored characteristics. The interplay of 3d and 4f magnetism in rare-earth transition metal antimonides is an ideal platform to search for such complex behavior. Here the synthesis, crystal growth, structure, and complex magnetic properties are reported of the new compound Pr3 Fe3 Sb7 as studied by magnetization and electrical transport measurements in static and pulsed magnetic fields up to 56 T, powder neutron diffraction, and Mößbauer spectroscopy. Curcumin Accelerates the Lateral Motion of DPPC Membranes.

Curcumin, the main ingredient in turmeric, has attracted attention due to its potential anti-inflammatory, anticancer, wound-healing, and antioxidant properties. Though curcumin efficacy is related to its interaction with biomembranes, there are few reports on the effects of curcumin on the lateral motion of lipids, a fundamental process in the cell membrane. Employing the quasielastic neutron scattering technique, we explore the effects of curcumin on the lateral diffusion of the dipalmotylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) membrane. Our investigation is also supported by Fourier transform infrared s

Lithium Iron Aluminum Nickelate, LiNix Fey Alz O2 -New Sustainable Cathodes for Next-Generation Cobalt-Free Li-Ion Batteries.

In recent years, cobalt has become a critical constraint on the supply chain of the Li-ion battery industry. With the ever-increasing projections for electric vehicles, the dependency of current Li-ion batteries on the ever-fluctuating cobalt prices poses serious environmental and sustainability issues. To address these challenges, a new class of cobalt-free materials with general formula of LiNix Fey Alz O2 (x + y + z = 1), termed as the lithium iron aluminum nickelate (NFA) class of cathodes, is introduced. These cobalt-free materials are synthesized using the sol-gel process to explore thei

Arrangement of Ceramides in the Skin: Sphingosine Chains Localize at a Single Position in Stratum Corneum Lipid Matrix Models.

Understanding the structure of the stratum corneum (SC) is essential to understand the skin barrier process. The long periodicity phase (LPP) is a unique trilayer lamellar structure located in the SC. Adjustments in the composition of the lipid matrix, as in many skin abnormalities, can have severe effects on the lipid organization and barrier function. Although the location of individual lipid subclasses has been identified, the lipid conformation at these locations remains uncertain. Contrast variation experiments via small-angle neutron diffraction were used to investigate the conformation

Low-Frequency Phonon Driven Negative Thermal Expansion in Cubic GaFe(CN)6 Prussian Blue Analogues.

The understanding of the negative thermal expansion (NTE) mechanism is vital not only for the development of new NTE compounds but also for effectively controlling thermal expansion. Here, we report an interesting isotropic NTE property in cubic GaFe(CN)6 Prussian blue analogues (α l = -3.95 × 10-6 K-1, 100-475 K), which is a new example to understand the complex NTE mechanism. A combined study of synchrotron X-ray diffraction, X-ray total scattering, X-ray absorption fine structure, neutron powder diffraction, and density functional theory calculations shows that the NTE of GaFe(CN)6 originat

Microstructures of negative and positive azeotropes.

Azeotropes famously impose fundamental restrictions on distillation processes, yet their special thermodynamic properties make them highly desirable for a diverse range of industrial and technological applications. Using neutron diffraction, we investigate the structures of two prototypical azeotropes, the negative acetone-chloroform and the positive benzene-methanol azeotrope. C-HO hydrogen bonding is the dominating interaction in the negative azeotrope but C-ClO halogen bonding contributes as well. Hydrogen-bonded chains of methanol molecules, which are on average longer than in pure methano

Alzheimer's peptide amyloid-β, fragment 22-40, perturbs lipid dynamics.

The peptide amyloid-β (Aβ) interacts with membranes of cells in the human brain and is associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The intercalation of Aβ in membranes alters membrane properties, including the structure and lipid dynamics. Any change in the membrane lipid dynamics will affect essential membrane processes, such as energy conversion, signal transduction and amyloid precursor protein (APP) processing, and may result in the observed neurotoxicity associated with the disease. The influence of this peptide on membrane dynamics was studied with quasi-elastic neutron scattering, a techn

Chromium exposure and incidence of metabolic syndrome among American young adults over a 23-year follow-up: the CARDIA Trace Element Study.

Studies suggest that chromium deficiency is associated with elevated levels of fasting blood glucose, circulating insulin, cholesterol and triglycerides, and decreased proportion of lean body mass. However, data directly relating chromium levels to metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk are lacking. A total of 3,648 American adults from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, aged 20-32 years, were prospectively examined for the incidence of MetS and its five components from 1987-88 to 2010-11. Baseline toenail chromium levels were measured with instrumental neutron-activa
