[A young man with discoloured nails].

A 23-year-old man consulted his general practitioner with discoloured nails. The nails showed the typical pattern of half and half nails or Lindsay's nails. This condition sometimes accompanies renal failure or thyroid disease and must be differentiated from Terry's nails, psoriatic nails and onychomycosis. Blood tests showed no underlying condition in this patient.

The eleventh reported case of Mulvihill-Smith syndrome in the literature.

BACKGROUND: The Mulvihill-Smith Syndrome was first recognized in 1975. After the recognition of the Mulvihill-Smith Syndrome, ten cases have been described. CASE PRESENTATION: This article describes the eleventh case of this syndrome in a male patient, 24 years-old with short stature and microcephaly with mild cognitive impairment, deafness and allergic conjunctivitis. The patient was hospitalized several times for repeated infections, and the presence of multiple melanocytic nevi on his skin was noticed. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the entire set of signs and symptoms presented in our study, it w

Erythronychia.

Erythronychia is a term that covers a range of pathological patterns of red discoloration of the subungual tissues. The intensity of the red contrasts with the pale pink of the nail bed or the cream color of the lunula. It is typically due to one or more actors that include inflammation, vessel proliferation, and engorgement and focal thinning of the nail plate. This article describes the patterns both within an individual digit and when it extends to multiple digits. These patterns cover diverse inflammatory, infiltrative, and neoplastic diseases, and the correlation between these diagnoses a

Pigmented villonodular synovitis of the temporomandibular joint: a rare tumor of the temporal skull base.

Musculoskeletal tumors are not usually encountered at the skull base. Benign lesions such as cholesterol granuloma, cholesteatoma, fibrous dysplasia, and Paget disease are common examples of such tumors arising from the bone of the cranial base. The authors report a case involving an adult male patient with the rare finding of pigmented villonodular synovitis of the temporomandibular joint. This case is reported as an example of another lesion to consider in the differential diagnosis. Due to the complexity of the anatomy at the cranial base, radical resection as recommended for the usual site

Bullous prurigo pigmentosa.

Prurigo pigmentosa is a rare inflammatory skin disease of unknown etiology, characterized by recurrent, symmetrical, pruritic, erythematous papules resulting in gross reticular hyperpigmentation. The rash occurs mainly on the back, the chest and the nape of the neck. While PP is observed rather frequently in Japan, only a few cases have come to notice in other countries. Vesicular or bullous forms have been reported only rarely. The differential diagnosis includes lichen pigmentosus, pigmented contact dermatitis, confluent and reticulated papillomatosis of Gougerot and Carteaud, dermatitis her

Late onset Blueberry Muffin Syndrome following congenital rubella.

The authors report a case of congenital rubella in a 7-month-old female infant presenting a Blueberry Muffin Rash. Blueberry Muffin Syndrome is a cutaneous manifestation characterized by widespread maculo papular lesions of a reddish-blue or magenta colour, due to persistent dermal erythropoiesis in patients with congenital viral infections.

Regional cortical dysplasia associated with suspected hypomelanosis of Ito.

A 15-year-old girl with epilepsy, whose skin lesions were reminiscent of hypomelanosis of Ito, is reported. She manifested hypopigmented linear streaks on her upper and lower limbs. Brain magnetic resonance imaging examinations demonstrated poor differentiation of cerebral gray and white matter of her left occipital lobe, with accompanying gliosis. This region also revealed narrowing of sulci, considered to be mass effect. In this region, almost continuous spike discharges were evident on electroencephalograms, and low-perfusion status was observed on single photon emission computed tomography

Hypomelanosis of Ito: a syndrome requiring a multisystem approach.

Hypomelanosis of Ito can be defined as a syndrome providing a cutaneous epiphenomenon with a peculiar pattern of distribution, usually associated with disorders of the nervous system, skeleton and eyes. Four further patients are reported and the literature reviewed. The diagnostic criteria and the differences with other pigmentary diseases distributed along Blaschko's lines are highlighted. The main histopathological features are reported and the high frequency of the associated abnormalities are emphasized. The chromosomal findings and main genetic hypotheses are discussed. The suggested foll

Hypomelanosis of Ito associated with neuroblastoma.

We report a patient with hypomelanosis of Ito associated with neuroblastoma. Though not previously reported, the association is plausible since both conditions are forms of "neurocristopathy".

White forelock in Marfan's syndrome: an unusual association, with review of the literature.

The cutaneous expression of Marfan's syndrome is generally limited to striae distensae and a number of uncommon associations with other dermatologic disorders. To date, there have been no reported cases of hair or nail abnormalities accompanying this disorder. We describe a patient with Marfan's syndrome who presented with an acquired white forelock and we review the literature on the association of poliosis with various entities.

Hypomelanosis of ito: histochemical and ultrastructural observations.

Skin biopsies were taken from an infant girl with Hypomelanosis of Ito (Incontinentia Pigmenti Achromians) for histopathological, histochemical and electron microscopic studies. Histological observations were similar to those reported previously. Electron microscopy revealed two groups of melanocytes, an effete group and another group with a highly dendritic appearance. The significance of these findings is discussed.

Changes in hair color.

Hair color changes result not only from alterations of melanin production but also from changes in the hair structure itself, altering its optical properties. A variety of genetic, metabolic, nutritional, and acquired disorders result in hair color changes. When the underlying defect can be corrected, hair color usually returns to normal. The flag sign can occur as a result of nutritional insults or due to medications. Most drug-induced changes in hair color result in lighter hair color, although PABA and some chemotherapy regimens have darkened hair. Green hair due to exogenous copper may be
