Removal of the crystalline lens and its replacement by an intraocular lens (IOL) is known as refractive lens exchange (RLE). RLE is performed to correct high ametropia or aniseikonia. A double masked placebo controlled multicentric randomised clinical trial was conducted in 157 patients suffering from different eye ailment … trolled the progressive deteriorations. Subjective improvements were also noted with hypermetropia, presbyopia and astigmatism. Its healing capacity in allergic conjunctivitis was certainly better than placebo. It had no short term or long term side-effects. It is considered to be a useful drug in all conditions studied.

In 1985-86 an ophthalmologist screened 221 patients, ranging in age from six to 81, at Naerlandheimen central institution for mentally handicapped. The screening showed an alarming incidence of eye disease in this group, regardless of the etiology of the mental handicap or the patient's age. PURPOSE: As presbyopia occurs, new visual demands create a need for clear vision at multiple distances. Many spectacle wearers adapt into progressive addition lenses (PAL) in order to see clearly at distance, intermediate, and near. A multifocal contact lens provides the ability to see at these same distances without the prismatic effects of a spectacle lens or the peripheral obstruction of a spectacle frame. No studies have been done to date comparing the effect of these types of presbyopic vision correction on a variety of tests of visual performance representative of everyday tasks.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the optical power profiles of commercially available soft multifocal contact lenses and compare their optical designs.
METHODS: The power profiles of 38 types of multifocal contact lenses-three lenses each-were measured in powers +6D, +3D, +1D, -1D, -3D, and -6D using NIMO TR1504 (Lambda-X, Belgium). All lenses were measured in phosphate buffered saline across 8 mm optic zone diameter. Refractive index of each lens material was measured using CLR 12-70 (Index Instruments, UK), which was used for converting measured power in the medium to in-air radial power profiles.

BACKGROUND: OPTX 20/20 and Press-On Optics removable bifocal segments were evaluated in three areas: optical quality, effects on vision, and stability under simulated environmental conditions.
METHODS: To evaluate optical quality, sphere, cylinder, and spherical equivalent powers were measured in center and peripheral portions of 10 segments, with powers ranging from +1.00 to +2.50 D.
