Customized Titanium Reconstruction of Orbital Fractures Using a Mirroring Technique for Virtual Reconstruction and 3D Model Printing.

PURPOSE: Early operative reconstruction using titanium mesh is a technique often used for preventing sequelae after an orbital fracture. We sought to examine the utility of patient-specific molding of the mesh with a biomodel via virtual mirroring of the nonaffected side. METHODS: We retrospectively assessed the clinical and radiological outcomes of orbital fracture reconstruction using a customized titanium mesh shaped on 3D-printed biomodels in 34 unilateral orbital fracture cases. Preoperative virtual orbital reconstruction images, using the mirroring technique, were superimposed on postop

Minimally invasive treatment of calcaneal fractures via the sinus tarsi approach based on a 3D printing technique.

The sinus tarsi approach can be used for a limited exposure of the calcaneal fracture site. The reduction of the posterior articular surface, the shape of the calcaneus, the precise placement of the sustentacular screw (SS), the posterior articular surface screw of the calcaneal (PASS), and the long axis screw of the calcaneal (LAS) are still challenging. To that end, we proposed a minimally invasive technique for the treatment of calcaneal fractures via the sinus tarsi approach in combination with a three-dimensional (3D) printing technique. First, a 3D reconstructed model of the bilateral ca…

Reactive Microcontact Printing of DNA Probes on (DMA-NAS-MAPS) Copolymer-Coated Substrates for Efficient Hybridization Platforms.

High-performing hybridization platforms fabricated by reactive microcontact printing of DNA probes are presented. Multishaped PDMS molds are used to covalently bind oligonucleotides over a functional copolymer (DMA-NAS-MAPS) surface. Printed structures with minimum width of about 1.5 μm, spaced by 10 μm, are demonstrated, with edge corrugation lower than 300 nm. The quantification of the immobilized surface probes via fluorescence imaging gives a remarkable concentration of 3.3 × 10(3) oligonucleotides/μm(2), almost totally active when used as probes in DNA-DNA hybridization assays. Indeed, fl…

Combined Management of Meniscus Root Tear and High Tibial Osteotomy: A Surgical Strategy Using 3-Dimensional Printing.

Combining high tibial osteotomy with meniscal posterior root repair is technically challenging because of the limited metaphyseal bone stock, the proximity of the transtibial tunnel to the osteotomy site, and the risk of implant conflict or tibial fracture. To address these challenges, we describe a surgical technique that integrates computed tomography-based 3-dimensional (3D) preoperative planning with patient-specific 3D-printed surgical guides. 3D simulation of the osteotomy plane, fixation plate position, screw trajectories, and transtibial tunnel enables preoperative assessment of the sp

Design and development of gellan gum-derived photocrosslinkable hydrogel-based biomaterial inks for extrusion-based 3D printing.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing enables the fabrication of hydrogel constructs with precise architecture, yet developing photocurable hydrogel biomaterial ink that combine printability, structural stability, and biofunctionality remains a challenge. Here, we present a gallol-functionalized gellan gum methacrylate (GGMA-GA) hydrogel as a robust photocrosslinkable biomaterial ink for extrusion-based 3D bioprinting. A dual-crosslinking strategy was employed in which mild ionic pre-crosslinking enhances shear-thinning and print fidelity, followed by photocrosslinking of methacrylate groups to rein…

Light-Responsive 4D Printing of Carbon Nanotube-Liquid Crystal Elastomers for Directional Actuated Bending and Biomimetic Robotics.

The alignment of liquid crystal mesogens greatly influences the behavior of liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). Light irradiation generates temperature gradients, prompting photothermal-responsive LCE actuators to deform in response to the illumination direction. This study introduces a novel 4D printing method using LCE-carbon nanotube (CNT) composites to enhance the photoresponse efficiency of printed LCEs. Unlike previously reported mechanisms, our printed actuators achieve consistent directional actuation irrespective of light direction through precise control over liquid crystal mesogen ali…
