The organization and function of the Golgi apparatus in dendrite development and neurological disorders.

Dendrites are specialized neuronal compartments that sense, integrate and transfer information in the neural network. Their development is tightly controlled and abnormal dendrite morphogenesis is strongly linked to neurological disorders. While dendritic morphology ranges from relatively simple to extremely complex for a specified neuron, either requires a functional secretory pathway to continually replenish proteins and lipids to meet dendritic growth demands. The Golgi apparatus occupies the center of the secretory pathway and is regulating posttranslational modifications, sorting, transpo

Brain-body responses to chronic stress: a brief review.

In order to survive and thrive, organisms must adapt to constantly changing environmental pressures. When there are significant shifts in the environment, the brain and body engage a set of physiological and behavioral countermeasures collectively known as the "stress response". These responses, which include changes at the cellular, systems, and organismal level, are geared toward protecting homeostasis and adapting physiological operating parameters so as to enable the organism to overcome short-term challenges. It is the shift of these well-organized acute responses to dysregulated chronic

Hepatokines and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: Linking Liver Pathophysiology to Metabolism.

The liver plays a key role in maintaining energy homeostasis by sensing and responding to changes in nutrient status under various metabolic conditions. Recently highlighted as a major endocrine organ, the contribution of the liver to systemic glucose and lipid metabolism is primarily attributed to signaling crosstalk between multiple organs via hepatic hormones, cytokines, and hepatokines. Hepatokines are hormone-like proteins secreted by hepatocytes, and a number of these have been associated with extra-hepatic metabolic regulation. Mounting evidence has revealed that the secretory profiles

Renal and non-renal response of ABC and SLC transporters in chronic kidney disease.

INTRODUCTION: The solute carrier (SLC) and the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamilies play essential roles in the disposition of small molecules (endogenous metabolites, uremic toxins, drugs) in the blood, kidney, liver, intestine, and other organs. In chronic kidney disease (CKD), the loss of renal function is associated with altered function of remote organs. As renal function declines, many molecules accumulate in the plasma. Many studies now support the view that ABC and SLC transporters as well as drug metabolizing enzymes (DMEs) in renal and non-renal tissues are directly o

Serine/threonine kinase PpkA coordinates the interplay between T6SS2 activation and quorum sensing in the marine pathogen Vibrio alginolyticus.

Type VI secretion systems (T6SS) are multiprotein secretion machines that can mediate killing of bacterial cells and thereby modify the composition of bacterial communities. The mechanisms that control the production of and secretion of these killing machines are incompletely understood, although quorum sensing (QS) and the PpkA kinase modulate T6SS activity in some organisms. Here we investigated control the T6S in the marine organism Vibrio alginolyticus EPGS, which encodes two T6SS systems (T6SS1 and T6SS2). We found that the organism principally relies on T6SS2 for interbacterial competiti

Self-organized hummock-hollow patterns redistribute salinity stress in coastal meadows.

Self-organization theory predicts that ecosystem functioning and resilience can emerge from feedbacks that generate spatial patterns. These emergent properties have commonly been explained by local positive feedbacks that concentrate limiting resources within productive patches. Here, we identify a stress-redistribution feedback underlying self-organized hummock-hollow patterning. Through this feedback, salinity stress is partitioned across the patterned landscape, maintaining vegetated hummocks as low-salinity refugia alongside salt-rich hollows and thereby sustaining ecosystem functioning un

Phthalocyanine-based covalent organic frameworks: bridging molecular design and catalytic performance in CO2 reduction.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a type of porous material composed entirely of organic substances, featuring highly ordered structure, tunable pores, and customizable functions. They perfectly integrate the diversity and variability of organic materials with the characteristics of porous materials, and have shown great application prospects in numerous fields, such as energy, environment, catalysis, sensing, biomedicine. As an emerging high-performance material, the basic research and application exploration of COFs are currently in a stage of vigorous development, and it is also a popu

Breath odor: etiopathogenesis, assessment and management.

Oral malodor is a significant social disability which usually has a local cause, particularly arising from the oral flora. Malodor may arise from the lingual or periodontal flora, gram-negative anaerobes being the main organisms capable of releasing sulphur compounds from the putrefaction of debris and other material. Volatile sulphur compounds, cadaverine and other substances appear responsible for much of the malodor. Systemic disease may underlie some cases of oral malodor. The objective assessment of malodor is still best performed by the human sense of smell (organoleptic method) but more

Renal organic anion transporter 1: clinical relevance and the underlying mechanisms in chronic kidney disease.

Organic anion transporter 1 (OAT1), primarily found in the renal proximal tubule, is essential for the excretion of various uremic toxins that contribute to the onset and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). OAT1 also plays a vital role in the remote sensing and signaling network, facilitating the removal of metabolites through the kidneys. The function of OAT1 is impaired under conditions such as renal ischemia/reperfusion injury, oxidative stress, and fibrosis. Several transcription factors, post-translational modifications, and endocrine hormones control the activity and expression

[Effects of physical training on skeletal muscle and the central nervous system in older adults].

Aging is associated with a number of functional and structural changes of both skeletal muscle and the central nervous system (CNS). Over the past decades, the understanding of the interplay between peripheral muscle and the CNS has further improved, clearly indicating a crosstalk between both "organs". For example, muscle strain induces the release of myokines, which are then sensed by the brain and may lead to changes in plasticity. Therefore, physical exercise plays a crucial role in the maintenance of the functional and structural integrity of muscle and brain. Exercise should be prescribe

Respiratory viral infections and host responses; insights from genomics.

Respiratory viral infections are a leading cause of disease and mortality. The severity of these illnesses can vary markedly from mild or asymptomatic upper airway infections to severe wheezing, bronchiolitis or pneumonia. In this article, we review the viral sensing pathways and organizing principles that govern the innate immune response to infection. Then, we reconstruct the molecular networks that differentiate symptomatic from asymptomatic respiratory viral infections, and identify the underlying molecular drivers of these networks. Finally, we discuss unique aspects of the biology and pa

Advances in Urinary Liquid Biopsy: A Review of Emerging Sensing Platforms for Early Cancer Screening and Diagnosis.

Early screening of many types of cancers remains limited by the invasiveness of gold-standard tissue biopsies and the poor specificity of traditional clinical biomarkers like prostate-specific antigen (PSA). Non-invasive liquid biopsies are the emerging alternatives. Urine is one of the preferred body fluids for liquid biopsy as it offers a rich, easily accessible and large-volume source of cancer-specific metabolites, proteins, nucleic acids, extracellular vesicles, and cancer cells. This review reports the recent advancements in urinary cancer (bio)sensing technologies, including mainly opti

Nutrient Sensing and Growth Control in Plasmodium: Beyond mTOR Signaling.

The mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway is a central regulator of nutrient sensing, metabolism, growth, and stress adaptation in most eukaryotes. Malaria parasites of the genus Plasmodium, however, lack identifiable orthologues of mTOR kinase and its associated signaling complexes, raising the question of how these organisms coordinate environmental sensing with developmental progression and proliferation. Here, we discuss emerging evidence suggesting that Plasmodium has evolutionarily replaced the canonical mTOR signaling axis with a distributed regulatory architecture co

Mechanistic Insight into H2S-Induced Fluorescence Quenching in a Robust Metal-Organic Framework.

The development of chemically robust sorbents capable of integrating capture and optical sensing of toxic gas remains a major challenge. Herein, the ultramicroporous Zn(II)-based metal-organic framework, MFM-520, has been investigated for the adsorption and luminescent detection of H2S. Breakthrough measurements at 298 K and 1 bar show a reversible H2S uptake of 3.91 mmol g-1, while powder X-ray diffraction confirms full retention of crystallinity after adsorption. Solid-state photoluminescence experiments reveal a pronounced, selective fluorescence turn-off response to H2S in the gas phase, w

Accelerating Atomic Force Microscopy Imaging based on an Optimized Path Planning Method.

Based on compressed sensing, undersampling is a low cost and efficient way to speed up the process of atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging. The under-sampled information obtained is important in producing high-quality reconstructed images. Different samples and dynamic measurement show different characteristic of topography, which makes it impossible to acquire acceptable AFM image with same under-sampled scanning pattern. This work aims to propose an unsampling path planning method for effective under-sampled image acquisition. The preprocess is realized by object detection and k-means metho

Orbital-Level Chemical Coding for Exclusive Detection of VOCs Gases in Chemiresistive Sensors.

Cost-effective chemiresistive gas sensors are widely applicated in the commercial detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, their poor selectivity towards a target VOC within chemically similar mixtures impedes both qualitative and quantitative accuracy. This arises from the absence of intrinsic chemical criteria for designing selective sensing systems. This research emphasizes the importance of orbital engineering to achieve selectivity in chemiresistive materials. We tailor O 2p-band center (εO‑2 p) of the model material SnO2, achieving near 100% selectivity towards triethylam

A simple, sensitive and reusable bifunctional ratiometric fluorescent sensing platform RhB@Zr-MOF for rapid detection of adenosine triphosphate and malachite green.

A sensitive and accurate ratiometric fluorescent sensor (RhB@UIO-67) is constructed by simply encapsulating rhodamine B (RhB) within a zirconium-based metal-organic framework (UIO-67). Based on the inhibition effect of ligand-to-metal charge transfer, adenosine triphosphate ATP induces a significant enhancement in the MOF centre emission, but does not affect the fluorescence of RhB in the probe material at all, which are respectively employed as detection signal and reference signal to realize sensitive ratiometric fluorescence detection of ATP in human serum and urine with a detection limit (

Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Films Integrated with Wavy Structured Design for Wearable Bioelectronics.

The integration of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) with flexible electronic technologies offers a promising strategy for monitoring detailed health information, owing to their inherent porosity, excellent biocompatibility, and tunable catalytic capabilities. However, their application in wearable and real-time health monitoring remains largely unexplored, primarily due to the mechanical mismatch between the traditionally fragile HOFs particles and the softness of human skin. Herein, this study demonstrates an epidermal biosensor that maintains reliable sensing capability even under e
