Cortical anatomy plasticity in cases of cervical spondylotic myelopathy associated with decompression surgery: A strobe-compliant study of structural magnetic resonance imaging.

Using voxel-based morphometry (VBM), we studied cortical gray matter volume changes in patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) before and after cervical cord surgical decompression. We then discussed the structural damage mechanisms and the neural plasticity mechanisms involved in postsurgical CSM.Forty-five presurgical CSM patients, 41 of the same group followed-up 6 months after decompression surgery and 45 normal controls (NC) matched for age, sex and level of education underwent high-resolution 3-dimensional T1-weighted scans by 3.0 T MR. Then, VBM measurements were compared an

The use of patient registries in breast surgery: a comparison of the tracking operations and outcomes for plastic surgeons and national surgical quality improvement program data sets.

BACKGROUND: The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) and the Tracking Operations and Outcomes for Plastic Surgeons (TOPS) registries gather outcomes for plastic surgery procedures. The NSQIP collects hospital data using trained nurses, and the TOPS relies on self-reported data. We endeavored to compare the TOPS and NSQIP data sets with respect to cohort characteristics and outcomes to better understand the strengths and weakness of each registry as afforded by their distinct data collection methods. STUDY DESIGN: The 2008 to 2011 TOPS and NSQIP databases were queried for brea

Surgery of language-eloquent tumors in patients not eligible for awake surgery: the impact of a protocol based on navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation on presurgical planning and language outcome, with evidence of tumor-induced intra-hemispheric plasticity.

OBJECTIVES: Awake surgery and intraoperative monitoring represent the gold standard for surgery of brain tumors located in the perisylvian region of the dominant hemisphere due to their ability to map and preserve the language network during surgery. Nevertheless, in some cases awake surgery is not feasible. This could increase the risk of postoperative language deficit. Navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) and nTMS-based DTI fiber tracking (DTI-FT) provide a preoperative mapping and reconstruction of the cortico-subcortical language network. This can be used to plan and guide th

The Therapeutic Role of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the Interdisciplinary Treatment of Soft-Tissue Sarcomas in Germany-Cross-Sectional Results of a Prospective Nationwide Observational Study (PROSa).

Although the involvement of plastic surgery has been deemed important in the treatment of sarcoma patients to avoid oncological compromises and ameliorate patient outcomes, it is not ubiquitously available. The accessibility of defect reconstruction and its therapeutic impact on sarcoma care is the subject of this analysis. Cross-sectional data from 1309 sarcoma patients were collected electronically at 39 German study centers from 2017 to 2019. A total of 621 patients with surgical treatment for non-visceral soft-tissue sarcomas were included. The associated factors were analyzed explorativel

Procedural Portfolio Planning in Plastic Surgery, Part 2: Collaboration Between Surgeons and Hospital Administrators to Develop a Funds Flow Model for Procedures Performed at an Academic Medical Center.

INTRODUCTION: Although plastic surgeons make important contributions to the clinical, educational, and research missions of academic medical centers (AMCs), determining the financial value of a plastic surgery service can be difficult, due to complex cost accounting systems. We analyzed the financial impact of plastic surgery on an AMC, by examining the contribution margins and operating income of surgical procedures. METHODS: We collaborated with hospital administrators to implement 3 types of strategic changes: (1) growth of areas with high contribution margin, (2) curtailment of high-risk
