Identifying intestinal metaplasia at the squamocolumnar junction by using optical coherence tomography.

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an optical imaging method that produces high-resolution cross-sectional images of the esophagus. The accuracy of OCT for differentiating tissue types at the squamocolumnar junction (SCJ) has not been established. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to identify and validate OCT image criteria for distinguishing metaplastic from nonmetaplastic tissue at the SCJ. DESIGN: A total of 196 biopsy-correlated OCT images of the SCJ were acquired from 113 patients undergoing upper endoscopy. A pathologist blinded to the OCT results reviewed each pa

Central retinal artery occlusion: findings in optical coherence tomography and functional correlations.

BACKGROUND: Visual prognosis in central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is poor and not predictable in individual patients. There may be a correlation between visual acuity and extent of initial macular edema. METHODS: Central retinal thickness of eleven patients with subtotal CRAO was measured with optical coherence tomography (OCT). Patients' acute-stage macular thicknesses were compared to those of later stages. Values are given as mean (+/-standard error; range). RESULTS: The mean age of the eleven patients was 68.8 years (62-75). Eight men and three women were examined. The mean initial

Intravascular optical coherence tomography: comparison with histopathology in atherosclerotic peripheral artery specimens.

PURPOSE: Intravascular optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a new imaging modality that provides microstructural information on atherosclerotic plaques and has an axial resolution of 10-20 microm. OCT of coronary arteries characterizes different atherosclerotic plaque components by their distinctive signal patterns. Peripheral human arteries were examined ex vivo by means of OCT, and attempts to distinguish among fibrous, lipid-rich, and calcified atherosclerotic plaques were made based on imaging criteria previously established for coronary arteries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred fifty

Rapid spontaneous resolution of vitreomacular traction syndrome documented by optical coherence tomography.

A 48-year-old woman presented with a 2-week history of metamorphopsia and reduced vision in her left eye. Visual acuity was 20/30 OS. Slit lamp biomicroscopy fundus evaluation revealed a dull foveal reflex. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) showed attachment of the posterior hyaloid to the macula and significant macular elevation. One month after presentation, visual complaints disappeared. OCT revealed complete posterior vitreous detachment and normal foveal thickness. Although rare, rapid spontaneous resolution of vitreomacular traction syndrome can occur. OCT is a helpful diagnostic tool f

Optical Coherence Tomography with Gapped Spectrum Using Sparse Iterative Covariance-Based Estimation.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an optical imaging modality that provides high-resolution cross-sectional imaging of biological tissues noninvasively. In Fourier-domain OCT, axial resolution is governed by both the center wavelength and the spectral bandwidth of the light source; therefore, limited or discontinuous bandwidth degrades depth resolution and introduces sidelobes and artifacts in OCT images. To address these issues in OCT image reconstruction from gapped spectra, a sparse parameter estimation approach based on Sparse Iterative Covariance-based Estimation (SPICE) is proposed i
