Chromium-Lanthanide Complexes Containing the Cr═P═Cr Fragment: Synthesis, Characterization, and Computational Study.

Heterometallic complexes [Cp*2Ln(μ-isoCO)2{Cr2(μ-P)Cp2(CO)2}] [Ln = Yb (1), Sm (2)] were obtained in reactions of [Cp*2Ln(thf)2] (Ln = Sm, Yb) with [{CpCr(CO)2}2(μ,η2:2-P2)] (4). An analogous yttrium compound [Cp*2Y(μ-isoCO)2{Cr2(μ-P)Cp2(CO)2}] (3) was synthesized using a three-component reaction between [Cp*2Y(BPh4)], 4, and KC8. Compounds 1-3 were isolated as solvent-free crystalline phases; in the case of 2, the 2·0.5C7H8 solvate was also obtained. The structures of all crystalline phases were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. All compounds contain a unique {((CO)2CpC

Dietary Chromium Picolinate Supplementation Improves Glucose Utilization in Transition Calf by Ameliorating Insulin Response.

The decrease in insulin sensitivity during the transition of preruminant calves into ruminant animals is the common denominator. Meanwhile, this adaptation predisposes dairy calves towards various health issues and metabolic disorders that occur in later life. Chromium (Cr) has been shown to potentiate insulin functioning and is thereby helpful in reducing the risk of these metabolic disorders. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of Cr supplementation on the insulin sensitivity and health status in Hariana calves during their transition period. A total of 24 preruminant Hariana calv…

Particulate hexavalent chromium alters microRNAs in human lung cells that target key carcinogenic pathways.

Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] is a global environmental pollutant and human lung carcinogen. However, the mechanisms of Cr(VI) carcinogenesis are not well defined. Cr(VI)-altered gene expression has been reported in the literature and is implicated in numerous mechanisms of Cr(VI) carcinogenesis. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a key role in controlling gene expression and are associated with carcinogenic mechanisms. To date no studies have evaluated global changes in miRNA expression in human cells after Cr(VI) exposure. We used RNA sequencing to evaluate how a particulate Cr(VI) compound (zinc chroma…

Molecular mechanisms of Chromium(III) sorption by organo-ferrihydrite coprecipitates induced by crop straws.

Agricultural organo-ferrihydrite (Fh) coprecipitates (OFCs), resulting from the coprecipitation of Fe(III) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from returned straws, significantly affect the bioavailability of heavy metals in farmland. However, the molecular sorption mechanisms of Cr(III) by the OFCs remain unclear. Here, we explored the sorption behaviors of Cr(III) by the OFCs formed with wheat or maize straws derived-DOC (wheat-DOC or maize-DOC) under various environmental conditions, and further underlying molecular sorption mechanisms using Cr K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XA

Cytotoxicity, alpha-glucosidase inhibition and molecular docking studies of hydroxamic acid chromium(III) complexes.

Hydroxamic acids [R(CO)N(OH)R'] are flexible compounds for organic and inorganic analyses due to their frailer structures compared to the carboxylic acid. The syntheses and characterization of benzohydroxamic acid (BHA), its CH3-, OCH3-, Cl- para-substituted derivatives and their Cr(III) complexes are reported herein. The metal complexes were synthesized by reacting the hydroxamic acids with chromium(III) chloride hexahydrate in 2:1 molar ratio. The compounds were characterized via melting point, elemental analysis, FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR, TGA, mass spectrometry, molar conductance and UV-Visible…

Feasibility of using ammonium iron (II) sulphate to passivate hexavalent chromium in polluted soil.

ABSTRACTThe use of ammonium iron (II) sulphate ((NH4)2Fe(SO4)2) to remediate soil contaminated with Cr (VI) was assessed. (NH4)2Fe(SO4)2 effectively remediated soil contaminated with Cr (VI) and, acted as a fertilizer by supplying nitrogen because it contains ammonium. The effects of the (NH4)2Fe(SO4)2 dose, water content, pH of the soil and the contact time were investigated. The amount of Cr (VI) leached from the most-polluted soil, determined using a leaching toxicity procedure using optimized conditions, was 347.64 mg kg-1 when the soil was untreated and 6.74 mg kg-1 when the soil was trea

Chromium(VI) reduction in Streptomyces sp. M7 mediated by a novel Old Yellow Enzyme.

Old Yellow Enzymes play key roles in several cellular processes and have become an important family of enzymes with biotechnological potential. One of the major challenges of biotechnology consists of the bioremediation of co-polluted soils with organic and inorganic compounds. In co-contaminated areas, chromium normally exists in its more toxic and carcinogenic form Cr(VI). Microorganisms can reduce this metal to the insoluble and less toxic Cr(III). Streptomyces sp. M7 is a strain able to efficiently bioremediate polluted soils with γ-hexachlorocyclohexane and Cr(VI). The complete degradatio…

Remediation of hexavalent chromium in contaminated soil by Fe(II)-Al layered double hydroxide.

In this study, high-efficiency and low-cost Fe(II) and Al(III) layered double hydroxide (Fe-Al-LDH) was synthesized and used for the remediation of Cr(VI) contaminated soil. The Fe-Al-LDH characteristics were analyzed with different techniques. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses revealed its highly crystalline structure with sheet morphology, and a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 46.85 m2/g. In addition, the remediation tests indicated that adding 1 g/L of Fe-Al-LDH to a solution of Cr(VI)-contaminated soil, at a soil to solu

Comparison of chromium III and VI toxicities in water using sulfur-oxidizing bacterial bioassays.

The toxicities of Cr (III) and Cr (VI) in water were evaluated using sulfur-oxidizing bacterial (SOB) bioassays both in batch and fed-batch conditions. Two days were enough for a quick buildup of SOB consortium in the master culture reactor (MCR). At concentrations up to 100 mg L(-1), Cr (III) was found to be nontoxic in both conditions, while Cr (VI) at very low concentrations (0.1-2 mg L(-1)) was very toxic to the SOB. Literature review suggested that the nontoxic nature of Cr (III) might be due to the absence of the iron uptake pathway in Acidithiobacillus caldus (the predominant bacteria i

Allergy-Inducing Chromium Compounds Trigger Potent Innate Immune Stimulation Via ROS-Dependent Inflammasome Activation.

Chromium allergy is a common occupational skin disease mediated by chromium (VI)-specific T cells that induce delayed-type hypersensitivity in sensitized individuals. Additionally, chromium (VI) can act as an irritant. Both responses critically require innate immune activation, but if and how chromium (VI) elicits this signal is currently unclear. Using human monocytes, primary human keratinocytes, and murine dendritic cells we show that chromium (VI) compounds fail to trigger direct proinflammatory activation but potently induce processing and secretion of IL-1β. IL-1β release required primin…

Crystal structure of fac-tri-chlorido-[tris-(pyridin-2-yl-N)amine]-chromium(III).

In the neutral complex mol-ecule of the title compound, fac-[CrCl3(tpa)] [tpa is tris-(pyridin-2-yl)amine; C15H12N4], the Cr(III) ion is bonded to three N atoms that are constrained to a facial arrangement by the tpa ligand and by three chloride ligands, leading to a distorted octa-hedral coordination sphere. The average Cr-N and Cr-Cl bond lengths are 2.086 (5) and 2.296 (4) Å, respectively. The complex mol-ecule is located on a mirror plane. In the crystal, a combination of C-H⋯N and C-H⋯Cl hydrogen-bonding inter-actions connect the mol-ecules into a three-dimensional network.

Chromium Reaction Mechanisms for Speciation using Synchrotron in-Situ High-Temperature X-ray Diffraction.

We use in situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction (HT-XRD), ex-situ XRD and synchrotron X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy (XANES) to derive fundamental insights into mechanisms of chromium oxidation during combustion of solid fuels. To mimic the real combustion environment, mixtures of pure eskolaite (Cr(3+)2O3), lime (CaO) and/or kaolinite [Al2Si2O5(OH)4] have been annealed at 600-1200 °C in air versus 1% O2 diluted by N2. Our results confirm for the first time that (1) the optimum temperature for Cr(6+) formation is 800 °C for the coexistence of lime and eskolaite; (2) upon a…

Chromium oxide nanoparticle-induced genotoxicity and p53-dependent apoptosis in human lung alveolar cells.

Chromium oxide (Cr2 O3 ) nanoparticles (NPs) are being increasingly used as a catalyst for aromatic compound manufacture, abrading agents and as pigments (e.g., Viridian). Owing to increased applications, it is important to study the biological effects of Cr2 O3 NPs on human health. The lung is one of the main exposure routes to nanomaterials; therefore, the present study was designed to determine the genotoxic and apoptotic effect of Cr2 O3 NPs in human lung epithelial cells (A549). The study also elucidated the molecular mechanism of its toxicity. Cr2 O3 NPs led to DNA damage, which was dedu…

Bioremediation of hexavalent chromium (VI) by a soil-borne bacterium, Enterobacter cloacae B2-DHA.

Chromium and chromium containing compounds are discharged into the nature as waste from anthropogenic activities, such as industries, agriculture, forest farming, mining and metallurgy. Continued disposal of these compounds to the environment leads to development of various lethal diseases in both humans and animals. In this paper, we report a soil borne bacterium, B2-DHA that can be used as a vehicle to effectively remove chromium from the contaminated sources. B2-DHA is resistant to chromium with a MIC value of 1000 µg mL(-1) potassium chromate. The bacterium has been identified as a Gram ne…
