BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Since the uveal tract becomes involved in inflammatory disorders, which are known to affect lipid metabolism, we studied normal membrane phospholipids (PLs) in order to (1) determine baseline PL profiles of the iris, ciliary body, and choroid, and (2) compare and contrast PL profiles of the uveal tissues.
METHODS: Iris, ciliary body and choroid tissues were isolated from rabbit eyes (n = 30) and extracted with chloroform-methanol using a modified Folch procedure. Quantitative tissue PL profiles were obtained using 31P nuclear magnetic resonance.

We performed a postmortem ocular examination on a 52-year-old man who had had Choyce VIII intraocular lenses implanted in both eyes. Visual acuity with both lenses was 6/6 (20/20). There were no clinical complications before the patient's death. We observed the Shearing-style intraocular lens in human cadaver eyes and in dog eyes. In human cadaver eyes the lens loops rest in the ciliary body sulcus without exerting undue pressure; the only major problem occurred when the posterior capsule was torn and a loop found its way into the pars ciliaris of the ciliary body or into the vitreous base. The eyes from pigmented rabbits were instilled with the beta-adrenoceptor antagonists H 216/44 or timolol. After a single instillation (1.9 mumol), the iris and ciliary body contained H 216/44, which decreased with a half-life of approx. 43 days. The response of sodium, potassium-adenosine triphosphatase (Na,K-ATPase) to cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)-dependent protein kinase was examined in membranes obtained from rabbit iris-ciliary body. Intraocular medulloepithelioma is a rare tumor usually arising from the ciliary body and presenting in childhood. We recently managed a case of an advanced medulloepithelioma in a 45-year-old man that went untreated for several years. The patient had an exenteration after the tumor destroyed the eye and extended into the central nervous system. PURPOSE: We studied a case of a pigmented adenoma of the ciliary epithelium.
METHODS: We used magnetic resonance imaging in the clinical diagnosis of this tumor.
RESULTS: The tumor was successfully treated by local excision.
CONCLUSIONS: Magnetic resonance imaging is most useful in evaluating a ciliary body mass for local extension. It cannot clinically distinguish a pigmented adenoma of the ciliary epithelium from a uveal melanoma.

The presence of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)-like immunoreactivity, especially in the anterior part of the guinea pig uvea, was studied using an indirect immunofluorescence technique.
