Prevalence of Developmental Dyslexia in Spanish University Students.

A recent concern in the field of dyslexia studies is the lack of awareness and attention to university students suffering from this condition. If this problem is serious in countries where the relative opacity of the writing system allows for an early detection and, therefore, effective interventions, it is most critical in countries where transparent spelling makes such detection difficult, except in the most severe cases. In Spain, the diagnosis of dyslexia is rare among university-level adults. The present study pursues three aims: (a) to put forward a screening instrument for the detection…

Volleyball and other analogies: a response to Englert.

Englert and her colleagues have contributed much to our knowledge about effective writing instruction. They have demonstrated that interventions that make explicit the writing process and text structures are successful with students with learning disabilities as well as those without. Englert attributes this success to the holistic, social, and interactive nature of the instruction. However, one must keep in mind that CSIW was a package approach that included other validated instructional components. CSIW teachers presented conceptual models, used examples and nonexamples to illustrate text st…

Teaching authentic peer review using preprints: a modular curriculum that can be embedded into existing science courses.

The peer-reviewed literature is the foundation of science and science education. Peer-reviewed journal articles are often assigned as readings or used as references in undergraduate science courses. However, students cannot participate in journal peer review and are rarely taught how to write peer review reports, an authentic form of scientific communication and an important part of the job of a scientist. As such, authentic peer review represents part of STEM's hidden curriculum. Here, we present a modular, project-based curriculum on how to peer review a manuscript and write a balanced peer

When Assessment Theory Meets Generative AI: Reimagining SBA Design in Medical Education.

Current evaluations of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in item-writing within medical education often concentrate on isolated dimensions such as validity or reliability, overlooking the broader theoretical foundations that underpin a trustworthy assessment design. This narrow emphasis risks oversimplifying GenAI's role and obscuring how its adoption reshapes the relationship between quality, efficiency, and educational value. To address this complexity, this paper presents the Co-Created SBA Design (CCSD) framework, which reconceptualises assessment theory for the GenAI era through …

Universal patterns in eye movements across lines of text.

This study examines cross-linguistic patterns of eye movements before, during, and after return sweeps-the saccades that move readers' gaze from one line of text to the next. Using data from 28 language samples representing 22 languages and multiple writing systems from the Multilingual Eye Movement Corpus project, we tested whether spatial and temporal characteristics of interline transitions reflect universal oculomotor mechanisms or language-specific factors. Results show that extreme fixations cover about 80% of each line across all languages, and fixation durations follow consistent posit…

Immediate and Short-Term Effects of Multimodal Neuromodulatory Rehabilitation Following Thalamotomy for Writer's Cramp: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Evidence for rehabilitation after thalamotomy for writer's cramp is limited. We report immediate effects of multimodal rehabilitation. CASE REPORT: A woman in her 20s with complex writer's cramp underwent left Vo/Vim thalamotomy. Postoperatively, she completed a 6-day program combining fine motor training, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, and vibration. Thalamotomy reduced dystonia (Writer's Cramp Rating Scale [WCRS]: movement, 12 to 4; speed, 2 to 1), and rehabilitation yielded immediate writing speed gains and progressive functional recovery; although WCRS scores rem…

A smart pen prototype with adaptive algorithms for stabilizing handwriting tremor signals in Parkinson's disease.

This study presents a smart pen prototype designed to dynamically mitigate hand tremors, thereby enhancing writing quality and user comfort for individuals with conditions such as Parkinson's disease. The device employs an accelerometer for real-time tremor detection, a microcontroller for rapid data processing, and a vibration motor to counteract tremor effects. Adaptive algorithms-including Fx-LMS, Fx-NLMS, a combined Fx-LMS/NLMS approach, RLS, and the Kalman Filter-were evaluated using signals from the NewHandPD dataset. Simulation results revealed that although the RLS algorithm achieved t…

CIRSE Standards of Practice for the Interventional Radiology Management of Acute and Chronic Arterial Mesenteric Ischaemia.

PURPOSE: Mesenteric ischaemia due to arterial occlusion, usually secondary to atherosclerosis or arterial thromboembolism, may be acute or chronic. Endovascular intervention is now the primary treatment based on its minimally invasive nature and lower in-hospital mortality. Open surgery is indicated in the presence of bowel necrosis, the diagnosis of which remains challenging. This document makes best-practice recommendations about the interventional radiology management of acute and chronic mesenteric ischaemia. METHODS: The CIRSE Standards of Practice Committee established a writing group o…

Protective factors against the emotional impact of the pandemic in adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and intellectual disability (ID).

The pandemic has had very negative effects on the mental health of the population, especially in people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and intellectual disability (ID). We analyzed whether social communication, quality of life, and anxiety explain changes in the emotional impact of the pandemic in 60 adults with ASD and ID. Correlations between the study variables were analyzed and subsequently a multiple regression analysis was performed. The results show that communication writing, leisure and well-being index, explain 31% of the dependent variable. The well-being index (PWI) contribut…

A comparative study of how teachers communicate in deaf education classrooms.

This study investigates the communication practices of four teachers in 3rd to 6th grade classrooms with 9 deaf students with limited language proficiency and in stages of emergent writing development. Analyzing language modalities, utterance types, and class interactivity, we found that teachers using American sign language used student-centered approaches, generating a greater number of directives and responsive utterances. They persevered in increasing students' engagement and were successful in clarifying misunderstandings. Teachers using spoken English used teacher-centered approaches, ma…

A Percutaneous Crossing Algorithm for Femoropopliteal and Tibial Artery Chronic Total Occlusions (PCTO Algorithm).

Peripheral artery chronic total occlusions (PCTOs) are frequently encountered during endovascular treatment of peripheral artery disease. Failure to successfully cross PCTOs accounts for the majority of unsuccessful endovascular procedures and associated complications. This review outlines a contemporary ultrasound-based approach to crossing femoropopliteal (FP) PCTOs based on a review of prospectively collected case report surveys, published evidence, and expert opinion compiled by the writing group members. The authors describe optimal imaging of PCTO lesions as well as key angiographic and …

Developmental Dyslexia and Dysgraphia: What can We Learn from the One About the Other?

Up to 17% of German school children suffer from reading and writing disabilities. Unlike developmental dyslexia, only few studies have addressed dysgraphia. Presenting a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art in developmental dyslexia and dysgraphia, this paper aims to determine how far existing knowledge about the causes of developmental dyslexia also apply to developmental dysgraphia. To promote understanding of developmental dysgraphia, the paper discusses relevant aspects such as predictors, causes and comorbidities, models of acquisition as well as existing deficit models.…

The nature and treatment of phonological text agraphia.

Phonological alexia and agraphia are written language disorders characterised by disproportionate difficulty reading and spelling nonwords in comparison to real words. In phonological alexia, it has been shown that, despite relatively accurate reading of words in isolation, text-level reading deficits are often marked and persistent. Specifically, some individuals demonstrate difficulty reading functors and affixes in sentences, a profile referred to as phonological text alexia. In this paper, we demonstrate an analogous manifestation of the phonological impairment on text-level writing and su…
