Feasibility of measuring acoustic streaming for improved diagnosis of rhinosinusitis.

No noninvasive methods exist currently with the capability of distinguishing between various stages of a sinus infection. We studied a method based on induced acoustic streaming in the accumulated fluid within the maxillary sinuses. The hypothesis was that acoustic streaming will not be induced at clinically acceptable intensity levels in infectious mucous fluid because of its high viscosity, whereas detected acoustic streaming is a strong indication that the sinus content is a noninfectious serous fluid. As a model, an anthropomorphic sinus phantom with bovine cortical bone to mimic the bone

Acoustic indicators for mapping infestation probabilities of soil invertebrates.

Acoustic and traditional excavation methods were used in consecutive summers to conduct two geospatial surveys of distributions of white grubs and other soil invertebrates in two forage fields. Indicator variables were constructed from listener- and computer-based assessments of sounds detected at each recording site and then applied in geostatistical analysis, contingency analysis, and spatial analysis of distance indices (SADIE) of soil invertebrate distributions. Significant relationships were identified between the acoustic indicators and the counts of sound-producing soil invertebrates in

Acoustic injury and TRPV1 expression in the cochlear spiral ganglion.

Acoustic trauma not only produces temporary and permanent hearing loss but is a common cause of chronic tinnitus. Recent work indicated a possible role for the transient receptor potential channel vanilloid subfamily type 1 (TRPV1) in modulating the effects of cochlear injury. In our research, we investigated the effects of acoustic damage on TRPV1 expression in spiral ganglion neurons of adult rats. After exposing them unilaterally to noise, we extracted cochleas and processed the spiral ganglion for TRPV1 expression at four posttrauma intervals (2 hours, 24 hours, 12 days, and 16.9 months).

Acoustic analysis findings in objective laryngopharyngeal reflux patients.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify the effects of objective laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) on the acoustic parameters of patients by comparing their voice samples with that of control subjects. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study in two tertiary reference hospitals. METHODS: 48 consecutive patients with symptoms related to LPR and 64 control subjects were included in the study. Suspected LPR patients underwent a 24-hour ambulatory pH monitoring, and 25 (52%) of them were shown to have objective LPR. Acoustical evaluation results of objective LPR patients were compared with that of

Comparison of growth patterns of acoustic neuromas with and without radiosurgery.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the natural history of acoustic neuroma growth to the reported growth rate of acoustic neuromas after radiosurgical therapy, a retrospective review and meta-analysis of the literature was performed. The retrospective review was of one hundred eleven patients (average age, 71 yr) who chose to have their acoustic neuromas managed conservatively in our institution. These patients underwent serial magnetic resonance imaging for assessment of tumor growth for an average period of 38 months. Growth patterns if these untreated tumors were compared to that of radiosurgically trea

Birth control pills and nonprofessional voice: acoustic analyses.

PURPOSE: Two studies are presented here. Study 1 was aimed at evaluating whether the voice characteristics of women who use birth control pills that contain different progestins differ from the voice characteristics of a control group. Study 2 presents a meta-analysis that combined the results of Study 1 with those from 3 recent studies that compared voices of women who use and do not use birth control pills. METHOD: In Study 1, voice samples from 30 women with no history of voice training, who use pills with different progestins (drospirenone, desogestrel, gestodene), and 10 women who do not

Acoustic prediction of voice type in women with functional dysphonia.

The categorization of voice into quality type (ie, normal, breathy, hoarse, rough) is often a traditional part of the voice diagnostic. The goal of this study was to assess the contributions of various time and spectral-based acoustic measures to the categorization of voice type for a diverse sample of voices collected from both functionally dysphonic (breathy, hoarse, and rough) (n=83) and normal women (n=51). Before acoustic analyses, 12 judges rated all voice samples for voice quality type. Discriminant analysis, using the modal rating of voice type as the dependent variable, produced a 5-v

Acoustical signal properties for cardiac/respiratory activity and apneas.

Traditionally, auscultation is applied to the diagnosis of either respiratory disturbances by respiratory sounds or cardiac disturbances by cardiac sounds. In addition, for sleep apnea syndrome diagnosis, snoring sounds are also monitored. The present study was aimed at synchronous detection of all three sound components (cardiac, respiratory, and snoring) from a single spot. The sounds were analyzed with respect to the cardiorespiratory activity, and to the detection and classification of apneas. Sound signals from 30 subjects including 10 apnea patients were detected by means of a microphone

[Possibilities of using of transpalpebral acoustic tonometry in pediatric ophthalmology].

A new approach to transpalpebral assessment of intraocular pressure (IOP) was developed, by using a model of its graded elevation, in which natural anatomic and topographic relationships were not impaired in the fundus of the eye and by studying the biomechanical regularities of tension distribution in the ocular accessory apparatus when IOP was altered. An objective biomechanical criterion was proposed for measuring IOP. The capacities of transpalpebral acoustic tonometry were assessed in children with ocular injuries and congenital glaucoma in the clinic. There is evidence for that it is exp

Counseling patients on surgical options for treating acoustic neuroma.

The selection of surgical approach for the removal of AN is a complex one, depending on factors related to specific tumor anatomy, patient characteristics, and the familiarity and skill level of the skull base team.Overall, the literature supports that surgical outcomes are acceptable in regard to tumor removal, patient safety, and complication rates. The inconsistent reporting methods in the current literature make it difficult to assess logically the rates for hearing preservation, facial nerve outcome, and complications as controlled for tumor size and other preoperative patient characteris

[The analysis of brainstem acoustic evoked potentials in diphtheritic polyneuropathy].

The possibility of central and peripheral impairment of the acoustic analyser was studied in 18 patients with severe diphtheritic polyneuropathy (DP) using brainstem acoustic evoked potentials (BAEPs). The acoustic nerve impairment was found in 27.8%, the central abnormalities--in 44.4%. All the patients with CNS impairment suffered from chronic alcoholism. The data obtained have been compared to those of 26 patients with chronic alcoholism. In this group, peripheral polyneuropathy was confirmed in 76.9% cases; BAEPs revealed isolated involvement of the peripheral part of the acoustic nerve in

Cranial nerve preservation in surgery for large acoustic neuromas.

Facial nerve outcomes and surgical complication rates for other cranial nerves were evaluated retrospectively after the resection of large acoustic neuromas. The charts of all patients who underwent surgical removal of an acoustic neuroma between 1992 and 2001 at New York University Medical Center were reviewed. Fifty-four patients with tumors measuring 3 cm or larger were included in the study. Four patients had neurofibromatosis type 2, two of whom underwent bilateral removal of acoustic neuromas. Translabyrinthine microsurgical removal of tumor was performed in 47 of 56 cases (84%). In all

Occupation and risk of meningioma and acoustic neuroma in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Workplace exposures may be related to the development of brain tumors. In this case-control study, we examine occupation as a risk factor for meningioma and acoustic neuroma. METHODS: A lifetime work history was obtained for 197 incident cases of meningioma, 96 cases of acoustic neuroma and 799 controls with non-malignant diseases enrolled from three hospitals in the United States between 1994 and 1998. Jobs considered to have similar tasks and chemical exposures were assigned to an occupational group. Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (OR) adjusted for study ma
