INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Supracondylar humeral fractures represent only about 0.5-1% of all fractures in adults. The objective of this study is to evaluate functional outcome and quality of life in patients treated with open reduction and internal fixation using double plates.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We designed a retrospective descriptive study including 27 supracondylar humeral fractures treated with open reduction and internal fixation using two anatomic plates from January 2005 to September 2012. Mean age was 56 ± 22.9 years including 14 female and 13 male. All fractures were classified

BACKGROUND: The elbow is one of the most commonly dislocated joints, and dislocation is usually accompanied with an assortment of soft tissue injuries. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively analyze and describe the patterns of ligamentous, tendinous, and muscular injuries in patients with an acute elbow dislocation and subsequent magnetic resonance image (MRI) evaluation.
METHODS: From 2008 to 2020, 235 patients clinically diagnosed with an elbow dislocation were seen in the department, of which only 19 underwent an MRI of the affected elbow. Twelve patients met inclusion criteria,

INTRODUCTION: Osteopetrosis is caused by general increase in bone density and obliteration of the medullary canal. Fractures are a frequent complication and their management is considered a challenge due to increased resistance to reaming and screw positioning; reduction maneuvers have to be done more carefully to avoid intraoperative fractures, and there is an increased risk of drill breakage. There is also a higher risk of infection and malunion, which increases the incidence of surgical revisions in this population.

Olecranon apophyseal fractures in children are uncommon. The bulk of these injuries are nondisplaced and therefore can be treated nonoperatively. Few published reports of children with displaced fractures of the olecranon apophysis exist, and the large majority of reports describe children with osteogenesis imperfecta. We report our experience with the case of an 11-year-old, healthy, male patient without osteogenesis imperfecta who sustained a displaced olecranon apophyseal fracture during a fall.

INTRODUCTION: Some scaphoid fractures become visible on radiographs weeks after a trauma which makes normal radiographs directly after trauma unreliable. Untreated scaphoid fractures can lead to scaphoid non-union progressing to osteoarthritis. Therefore, the general treatment for patients with a clinically suspected scaphoid fracture and normal initial radiographs is immobilisation with below-elbow cast for 2 weeks. However, most of these patients are treated unnecessarily because eventually less than 10% of them are diagnosed with an occult scaphoid fracture. To reduce overtreatment and cost

BACKGROUND: Radial head arthroplasty is a viable option in cases with terrible triad injuries of elbow, wherein the radial head sustains significant comminution that precludes reconstruction. Nevertheless, this alternative is not recommended for individuals with poor elbow skin conditions, accompanied neuropsychiatric disorders, or low patient compliance. This case report presents a patient with bilateral terrible triad injury, along with the aforementioned conditions. The report outlines the treatment challenges of such a case and proposes potential solutions.

The treatment of comminuted fractures of the radial head with concomitant injuries of the ulnar complex by resection of the radial head usually does not provide satisfactory long-term results. Other than joint instability in the elbow and a limited range of motion, radius proximalisation in the sense of ulnocarpal impingement, osteoarthritis and pain in the elbow have been described. Between 1995 and 1997, 11 radial head prostheses were implanted in ten patients who had sustained a comminuted fracture of the radial head with concomitant injury to the ulnar complex. A follow-up survey was condu

»: Radial head arthroplasty is a viable surgical option when a radial head fracture cannot be reconstructed. Radial head arthroplasty provides a load-bearing articular structure against the capitellum in unstable fractured elbows.
»: Studies have emphasized the importance of choosing the correct implant size to replicate the native radial head anatomy, citing various consequences of improperly sized radial head prostheses. Overstuffing of the radiocapitellar joint, or lengthening of the radius, has been extensively studied because of its detrimental effects on elbow biomechanics, but other ty

BACKGROUND: Supracondylar humerus fracture is the most common fracture of the elbow in children. Closed reduction and percutaneous pinning is considered to be the optimal treatment strategy; however, in some instances, open reduction may be necessary. The aim of this retrospective study was to compare clinical and functional results of triceps-splitting posterior versus lateral approach in pediatric supracondylar humerus fracture surgery.
METHODS: A total of 38 patients underwent surgery; Group 1 consisted of 30 patients on whom posterior approach was used, while lateral approach was used on

OBJECTIVE: Fractures of the capitellum and trochlea constitute less than 1% of all elbow fractures and a shear fracture involving the capitellum and extending medially into most of the trochlea is rarely reported. Type IV capitellum fracture is still controversial in regard to its radiographic appearance, surgical approach and osteosynthesis. We report 10 cases of type IV capitellum fracture with a view to elucidating its clinical features and treatment outcome.
METHODS: We treated 10 patients of type IV capitellum fracture with a mean age of 32 years. A uniform surgical approach and postoper…

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of olecranon fractures is associated with a high rate of complications, potential restricted elbow function, and the need for revision surgeries. The aim of this study was to evaluate risk factors for complications and reduced functional outcomes following surgical treatment.
METHODS: All consecutive patients aged ≥18 years and treated at our level 1 trauma center for isolated open and closed olecranon fractures between January 2015 and March 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. Data on epidemiology, comorbidities, fracture type, treatment performed, and complica

BACKGROUND: In this study, we aimed to compare the stability of traditional tension band wiring (TBW) and screw combined TBW (SC-TBW) fixation methods performed for a transverse olecranon osteotomy-fracture during different degrees of elbow movement by using finite element analysis.
METHODS: Three-dimensional solid modeling of the olecranon was obtained by computed tomography images. Transverse olecranon fracture was created and fixed by TBW and SC-TBW with respect to triceps muscle force. Opening angle, twisting angle and interplanar translation occurring on the fracture line were evaluated

We report a 38-year-old man with a combination of fractures in his left shoulder involving the middle and distal clavicle, the scapular neck, and the coracoid process, associated with scapulothoracic dissociation and an upper brachial plexus injury. The middle clavicular fracture was fixed with a plate, whereas the distal clavicular fracture was fixed with tension band wiring. Internal fixation for fractures of the scapular neck and coracoid process was not performed, as they were in an acceptable position after fixation of the clavicular fractures. At the 14-month follow-up, the range of moti

Between 1968 and 1978, 32 patients were seen with nonunion of distal humerus fractures in close proximity to the elbow: 25 were treated with open reduction and fixation of the nonunion, and seven patients were treated with excision of the distal fragments and total elbow arthroplasty. Of the 25 patients treated with open reduction and fixation, 22 had union at an average of 7.74 months. However, six of these patients needed secondary procedures for repeat bone grafting or revision of the fixation device. Two of the seven patients with total elbow arthroplasty needed reoperation for loose humer
