"At the hospital they do not treat venom from snakebites": A qualitative assessment of health seeking perspectives and experiences among snakebite victims in Rwanda.

Snakebite envenomation (SBE) is a serious medical condition with human, animal, and environmental factors driving occurrence. In Rwanda, the number of SBE cases reported by the medical system is far lower than regional estimates for SBE incidence, suggesting that victims might be seeking care outside of formal medical structures. Our goals were to describe circumstances surrounding snakebite and to explore experiences of snakebite victims in accessing treatment. For this qualitative study, our team recruited individuals bitten by snakes between 2013 and 2018, who sought care either from tradit

Oncologist Perspectives on Timely Hospice Referral: A Qualitative Study.

IntroductionLate hospice referral rates are on the rise and are associated with negative outcomes at the end of life (EoL). Rates of late hospice referral vary drastically from oncologist to oncologist, and behavioral and psychological factors among individual oncologists have been identified as potential contributors to this variability. However, there remains a lack of clarity about how these oncologist-specific factors affect hospice referral practices among oncologists.MethodsThe Communication Optimization and Methodology For Improving Oncologist Hospice Referral Timing (COMFORT) study exp

Data flows during public health emergencies in LMICs: A people-centered mapping of data flows during the 2018 ebola epidemic in Equateur, DRC.

In infectious outbreaks, rapid case detection and reporting, coordination, and context-specific strategies are needed for rapid containment. Data sharing between actors, and the speed and content of data flows, is essential for expediting epidemic response. In this study, researchers mapped data flows during the 2018 Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in Equateur Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo using semi-structured interviews, ethnographic research, and focus groups with EVD response actors. During this research, we mapped and tracked data collection, transmission, storage, s

A Novel Radiology Communication Tool to Reduce Workflow Interruptions: Clinical Evaluation of RadConnect.

Despite the importance of communication, radiology departments often depend on communication tools that were not created for the unique needs of imaging workflows, leading to frequent radiologist interruptions. The objective of this study was test the hypothesis that a novel asynchronous communication tool for the imaging workflow (RadConnect) reduces the daily average number of synchronous (in-person, telephone) communication requests for radiologists. We conducted a before-after study. Before adoption of RadConnect, technologists used three conventional communication methods to consult radio

Enhanced Participation in Diabetes Screening and Care After Gestational Diabetes Through Community Health Workers: Results from the Es Mejor Saber Randomized Controlled Trial.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a strong risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus, but many women with GDM do not return for postpartum diabetes screening. Interventions utilizing community health workers have demonstrated improvements in health knowledge and participation in other disease settings. The objective of this study was to therefore determine whether bilingual, bicultural community health workers (i.e., promotoras) increase participation in postpartum disease screening and referral for diabetes prevention or care in an urban, low-resource Hispanic community. Ninety-four women

From Genes to Neural Circuits: Genetic and Systems Mechanisms of Ethanol Sensitivity and Tolerance in Drosophila melanogaster.

INTRODUCTION: Questioning is a key method in general information-seeking behaviour and teaching used by the dominant culture in Australia. Within an Australian health context the fundamental diagnostic tool used by medical staff is the biomedical interview or history taking, which is based on a battery of direct questions. Similarly, many health professionals rely on patient questions to prompt the sharing of information, or to make them aware of gaps in communication. This is problematic for many First Nations peoples, including Yolηu (First Nations people of North-East Arnhem Land), who

First statement on preparation for the COVID-19 pandemic in large German Speaking University-based radiation oncology departments.

The COVID-19 pandemic is challenging modern radiation oncology. At University Hospitals, we have a mandate to offer high-end treatments to all cancer patients. However, in times of crisis we must learn to prioritize resources, especially personnel. Compromising oncological outcome will blur all statistics, therefore all measures must be taken with great caution. Communication with our neighboring countries, within societies and between departments can help meet the challenge. Here, we report on our learning system and preparation measures to effectively tackle the COVID-19 challenge in Univers

[Case report: Purulent pericarditis caused by candida species--a rare but life-threatening disease in intensive care medicine].

We report a case of a male patient with drug abuse in his medical history who was hospitalized because of a community acquired pneumonia. Subsequently the patient developed an acute lung injury (ARDS) and a fulminant purulent pericarditis accompanied by a pericardial effusion. Caused by the pericardial tamponade cardiac function was severely restricted. Due to fast diagnosis and immediate adequate therapy such as systemic anti-fungal treatment, pericardiocentesis, percutaneous drainage, and later surgical intervention the patient was treated successfully. This article describes etiology, patho

[Prehospital emergency setting caused by hemorrhagic oropharyngeal bullae in a child with dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa Hallopeau-Siemens].

Two painful large hemorrhagic bullae developed within minutes of each other in a four-month-old infant with autosomal recessive inherited epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica Hallopeau-Siemens. There was no significant impairment of spontaneous respiration. The emergency physician sedated the infant with midazolam administered by the nasal route. A community pediatrician called for assistance opened a bulla, which impressively improved the symptoms and avoided the necessity of an admission to hospital. The presented case demonstrates the importance of exchange of information within the group of e

Delivering interventions to reduce the global burden of stillbirths: improving service supply and community demand.

BACKGROUND: Although a number of antenatal and intrapartum interventions have shown some evidence of impact on stillbirth incidence, much confusion surrounds ideal strategies for delivering these interventions within health systems, particularly in low-/middle-income countries where 98% of the world's stillbirths occur. Improving the uptake of quality antenatal and intrapartum care is critical for evidence-based interventions to generate an impact at the population level. This concluding paper of a series of papers reviewing the evidence for stillbirth interventions examines the evidence for c
