Between January 1954 and August 1971, 174 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the base of the tongue were treated with megavoltage external beam using conventional treatment times. Since the cumulative recurrence rate was 90% by 2 years, patients surviving 2 years without primary recurrences are considered to have no evidence of disease (NED) at the primary site. The primary control rate for T1 lesions is over 90% for doses of 6000 rads in 6 weeks to 6500 rads in 6 1/2 weeks. The control rate for T2 and T3 lesions is in excess of 80% with 7500 rads in 7 1/2 weeks. The slope of a hand-draw

Authors present a case of congenital sarcoma discovered by ultrasound at 30 weeks of pregnancy. The tumour was shown projecting from the anterior neck, well limited and measured 12 X 12 X 8 cm associated with maternal hydramnios. Pregnancy was terminated. Patho-histological finding was a spindle cell sarcoma of the neck and mandibular region. Discussion is about clinical, ultrasound-diagnostic and morphological aspect of this rare entity.

Oral squamous cell carcinomas result in significant impairment of oral function as they tend to invade bone. Bone invasion often mandates partial mandibular resection, such as hemimandibulectomy, which reduces overall quality of life. To rehabilitate such patients, fixed functional guide flanges position the mandible, improving overall masticatory ability. Custom fixed functional prostheses using digitally assisted dentistry are highly accurate. This technique uses digital technology and a digital workflow to fabricate an open-frame fixed functional guide flange prosthesis.

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a rare, benign, locally aggressive odontogenic epithelial tumor that affects the jaws. Although there are numerous reports on the variants of CEOT, occurrence of clear cells with complete absence of calcification has been a rarity. Histochemical analysis of tumor cells revealed glycogen granules with PAS staining, with absence of CD 1a staining in clear cells, while the amyloid-like deposit associated with clear cells showed green birefringence with Congo red. We report an unusual variant of CEOT occurring in a 27 years old male patient.

Osteoma is a benign osteogenic tumor arising from the proliferation of cancellous or compact bone. The osteoma can be central, peripheral, or of an extraskeletal type. Peripheral type of osteoma is most common in the lower jaws, which occurs at the surface of the cortical bone and is sessile or pedicled. The overall incidence of osteoma is low, affecting 0.01-0.04% of the population; osteomas comprise 12.1% of benign bone tumors and 2.9% of all bone tumors. Most of the osteomas occurring in the mandible are dense osteomas, and the cancellous osteoma is comparatively rare. Maxillofacial osteoma

Ectopic neural activity from damaged axons is thought to contribute to the development of sensory disorders following nerve injury. Here we have studied the role of sympathetic fibres in the generation or potentiation of this abnormal activity by determining the effect of predegenerating these fibres. Twelve adult ferrets were used in the study and six of them underwent sympathectomy by removal of the left superior cervical ganglion. Electrophysiological recordings were made from myelinated axons in fine filaments dissected from the inferior alveolar nerve, 3 days after it had been ligated fur

The early appearance of "hard" and "soft" tumors should give cause to search regularly for intestinal polyposis. Once the diagnosis is made prophylactic total colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis is justified. With regard to a polyposis of the upper gastrointestinal tract, there is room for observation. The possibility of a peripapillary carcinoma with or without simultaneous involvement of stomach and duodenum must be reckoned with even years after a colectomy. Postoperative mesenteric fibroses and widespread adhesions are responsible for subileus and ileus. Because of their tendency to recu

The lip is estimated to be the most frequent location for carcinoma of the oral cavity. It occurs more frequently in men, especially those with a history of exposure to sunlight. Despite the usually effective management, regional and occasionally distant metastases do occur, especially in advanced stages. In this retrospective analysis of patients with labial carcinoma presenting with distant bone metastases in 1995-2003, the extremely limited number of patients did not allow for multivariate data analysis. From a cohort of 415 patients presenting with lip lesions, 186 cases were diagnosed as

This case presents an incidental finding of a rare mandibular adenomatoid odontogenic tumour (AOT) in a patient who reported to the outpatient department seeking orthodontic treatment for misaligned teeth. The patient showed facial asymmetry with a painless, expansile swelling in the anterior mandible. Radiographic examination revealed a well-defined radiolucent lesion containing an impacted canine, consistent with the follicular variant of AOT. Following diagnostic biopsy, the lesion was surgically enucleated and the impacted canine removed. Postoperatively, the patient underwent 10 daily ses

BACKGROUND: Ossifying fibroma (OF) is a non-common benign fibrous-osseous lesion with highly aggressive behavior and tends to recur. Here, we report a case where Ossifying Fibroma (OF) was diagnosed in an adolescent female patient and was treated by marginal mandibular resection to avoid esthetic and functional defects in the future.
CASE PRESENTATION: OF was diagnosed in a 13-year-old woman incidentally. Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) examination showed a hypodense lesion compromising the vestibular table and 34 and 35 teeth. An incisional biopsy was performed to determine the histopat

Ameloblastic fibroma is a rare, benign, biphasic odontogenic tumour that typically presents in young patients and is treated conservatively with an excellent prognosis. An important differential is ameloblastoma, a more common odontogenic neoplasm that shares many of the clinical, radiological, and histological features, but requires more extensive surgery due to its potentially destructive nature. Both tumours demonstrate BRAF V600E mutations. While epithelial staining with BRAF V600E-specific immunohistochemistry is considered a surrogate marker for mutation and is supportive of the diagnosi

The primary treatment for ameloblastoma is curettage or marsupialization, with a relatively high recurrence. Presently, the authors demonstrate the potential efficacy of topical 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) as a promising treatment modality for ameloblastoma after curettage in 4 cases. Transmission electron microscopy of 5-FU-treated ameloblastoma tissue showed apoptosis within cells. Topical application of 5-FU after curettage efficiently treats ameloblastoma without recurrence within 2 years.

INTRODUCTION: Odontogenic myxomas (OM) are rare, benign odontogenic tumors known for their diagnostic complexity, local aggressiveness and risk of recurrence. Calcifications within these tumors are extremely rare, reported in fewer than ten cases in the literature. Accurate diagnosis is crucial for guiding surgical management and minimizing recurrence.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 47-year-old male who had an asymptomatic radiolucent lesion in the right mandible detected incidentally on routine panoramic radiography. Biopsy and subsequent histopathological examination raised the diffe

BACKGROUND: Myofibroma is a benign mesenchymal tumor derived from myofibroblasts. It is more common in children 's head and neck, but it is rare to involve the mandible and is easily confused with other jaw lesions.
CASE: This article reported a 13-year-old female patient with mandibular myofibroma associated with impacted teeth. The lesion presented insidiously as a painless swelling of the mandible. Imaging revealed a well-circumscribed expansile bone lesion. Intraoperatively, a firm gray-white mass with a clear demarcation from the surrounding bone was identified, and curettage was perform

Malignant transformation arising in the background of jaw cysts is a rare and often misdiagnosed condition, particularly when developing from residual root-derived cysts. We present a case of epithelial malignancy originating from a residual root-derived cyst in the mandible of a man around 50 years old. Histological evaluation of the sections revealed that the epithelial lining of the cystic lesion contained well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma components. Finally, a segmental mandibulectomy was performed, and the defect was reconstructed with free iliac bone grafting. This case unders

OBJECTIVES: The surgical approach for resection and reconstruction of tongue cancer (TSCC) with or without the lip-splitting incision is controversial. This study introduced a modified approach without lip-splitting and the clinical results were assessed.
METHODS: Sixty-eight TSCC patients underwent surgery using the modified submandibular mandibulotomy (MSMM) approach without lip-splitting, and another matched 68 patients using lip-splitting mandibulotomy (LSM) approach were enrolled in this study. The clinical results including intraoperative relevance and surgical morbidities, survival sta

The leiomyoma is a benign smooth-muscle neoplasm commonly found in the female genital tract, gastrointestinal tract, or skin. Leiomyomas of the oral cavity are unusual. Oral leiomyomas are uncommon due to the paucity of the smooth muscle in the mouth (except in blood vessels) and thus the involvement of jaw bones is extremely rare. Leiomyomas have been classified as solid angiomyoma, angioleiomyoma (vascular leiomyoma), and epithelioid variants. Angioleiomyomas are benign mesenchymal tumors derived from smooth muscle, which rarely occur in the oral cavity. Malignant transformation probably doe
