BACKGROUND: Nomenclature, classification, and management of parotid tumors are constantly evolving; this study was performed to identify temporal trends in histology and facial nerve sacrifice in parotidectomy during a 30-year period (1987-2018).
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of patients treated in a single tertiary-care institution during this time period was performed with analysis of temporal trends.
RESULTS: Two thousand eight hundred and fifty-seven parotidectomies were performed; pleomorphic adenoma was the most common histology (34.3%), followed by skin cancer metastases (32.3%). Si

Warthin tumor with ulceration of the surrounding skin is extremely rare, making it difficult to differentiate from parotid cancer in the clinical setting. We report a 65-year-old man with a Warthin tumor in the right parotid gland that had ulceration of the overlying skin. The patient presented with right upper neck mass 2 years ago. Ultrasound and fine needle aspiration were done, and Warthin tumor was suspected. One year later, the mass was enlarged with ulceration of the skin. Superficial parotidectomy with fusiform excision of the skin was performed, and histopathological diagnosis reveale

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common salivary gland tumor. Pseudopodia are finger-like projections extending beyond the tumor capsule, seen in pleomorphic adenoma. If not resected completely, these pseudopodia may increase the risk of recurrence after excision of pleomorphic adenoma. While performing a total conservative parotidectomy for the pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland, we encountered tumor in the Stensen's duct. On pathological examination, the tumor was not involving the wall of the duct but was passing through the lumen, like a pseudopod. During parotidectomy, the surgeon sh

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of adopting the ThormalGEN surgical patch (a porcine decellularized pericardial patch) in the superficial parotidectomy to prevent postoperative Frey's syndrome in patients with benign parotid tumor.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 59 patients with benign parotid tumor undergoing superficial parotidectomy between April 2016 and January 2017 were enrolled, and divided into the ThormalGEN group (n = 37) and the control group (n = 22) based on their willingness to have the ThormalGEN surgical patch used in the superficial parotidectomy.

OBJECTIVES: Angiogenesis underlies tumour growth and metastasis through hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), epithelial growth factor (EGF), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). The aim of this study was to determine the levels of VEGF, EGF, HGF, HGFR (hepatocyte growth factor receptor), and SRSF1 (serine-rich protein splicing factor-1) in patients with parotid gland tumours and in healthy controls via ELISA in parotid saliva. Immunohistochemical expression of anti-angiogenic isoform of VEGF165b subunit, VEGFR1, VEGFR2, and microvessel density (CD34) were assessed in the tumour tissue and

Objective:To assess the outcome for prevention the gustatory sweating syndrome and facial contour deformity with sternocleidomastoid muscle flaps in the parotidectomy. Method:It was a prospective study. Eighty-one patients who underwent parotidectomy were randomly divided into 2 groups, sternocleidomastoid muscle flaps group and control group. They were tested with the subjective and objective function testing in 3, 6, 9, 12 months after operation. We assessed the result. Result:All of the result of the sternocleidomastoid muscle flaps group was obviously better than the control group. There w

PURPOSE: To evaluate and compare the effectiveness of acellular dermal matrix (ADM) and parotid fascia in preventing Frey's syndrome.
METHODS: A literature research was performed using Wanfang Database, Chinese Biological Literature Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Chinese Scientific Journals database of VIP from 2001 to 2013. Relative ratio (RR) was calculated and meta analysis was performed by Review Manager 5.2.
RESULTS: A total of 16 controlled studies were included. Meta analysis showed that the use of ADM and preservation of the parotid fascia could significantly r

Sialadenoma papilliferum is a rare benign salivary gland tumor. We present an unusual case of sialadenoma papilliferum of the parotid gland, discuss clinical presentation, diagnostic challenges, and review of the literature. A 65-year-old male smoker presented with a large, exophytic, fungating, painless mass in the tail parotid for 8 years. The tumor developed an exophytic component 2 years before presentation. The patient subsequently underwent superficial parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation. Initial pathological analysis suggested a variant of Warthin's tumor. The pathology underwe

Cystadenocarcinoma is a rare malignant tumor, with an estimated incidence of 2% of malignant salivary gland tumors. Cytological diagnosis of cystadenocarcinoma is important for differential diagnosis between benign lesions and malignant tumors with cystic growth. We report a case of cystadenocarcinoma causing difficulty in cytological diagnosis. A 23-year-old man presented with an asymptomatic mass in the left parotid gland that had been present for 2 years. The mass was elastic hard, measuring 30 x 35 mm in diameter. Preoperative fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) showed a small number of

Sialolipoma is a relatively new and rare variant of lipoma of the salivary glands characterized by the combination of classical lipoma morphology with non-neoplastic ductulo-acinary salivary tissue components. Including the presented case, 27 sialolipomas, 14 of them localized in the parotid gland, have been published. We describe the clinical, radiological and pathomorphological characteristics of a parotid sialolipoma in a 43-year-old man.

INTRODUCTION: A case of pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland was reported. Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign tumor of the major salivary glands. A review of the literature confirms that this kind of tumor is less common in the minor salivary glands. We described statistic population, types of the diagnostic, treatment and clinical course of pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: We encountered such a tumor in a 55-year-old woman who was admitted to our Hospital. The only symptom was significant face deformation, growing for 30 years.
RESULTS: The tumor

BACKGROUND: The rhytidectomy approach for parotidectomy allows the incision to be hidden, and post-operative scarring minimised. Furthermore, separate elevation of the Superficial Musculo-Aponeurotic System (SMAS) reduces the incidence of Frey's syndrome, and provides vascularized soft tissue for contour reconstruction. The technique has gained popularity particularly with plastic surgeons, but concerns persist that with this approach, particularly with lesions located anteriorly, access to the gland may be inadequate, and facial nerve identification may be compromised.

We herein describe a case of accessory parotid gland tumor, including diagnosis and surgical approach. The accessory parotid gland is salivary tissue separated from the main parotid gland and lying on masseter muscle. It has secondary duct empting into the Stensen's duct. The accessory parotid gland exists in 21-61 % of individuals. However, the appearance of an accessory parotid tumor is rare, with a reported frequency of 1-7.7 % of all parotid gland tumors. Surgical resection is the treatment of choice for the accessory parotid gland tumor. It is important to identify the buccal branch of th
