A description of the sequence of long-term behavior of autogenous boneblock in maxillary sinus augmentation in sheep: Additional morphologic and histomorphometric evidence.

OBJECTIVE: To document the behavior of autogenous bone block in sinus lift and surgical consequences. STUDY DESIGN: Twelve sinus lifts with autogenous hip bone blocks and simultaneous insertion of two implants in 6 adult female sheep. Polychrome sequential labelling and histologic and histomorphometric evaluation after 6, 16, and 26 weeks. RESULTS: Augmentation material in the apical third was almost fully resorbed after 26 weeks (P = .00388). Percentage of bone tissue increased 0.5-1.0 mm from the implant in crestal region (15.3 ± 7.5% to 16.2 ± 10.1%), whereas it vanished in the apical reg

Incidence of and Factors Associated with Sinus Membrane Perforation During Maxillary Sinus Augmentation Using the Reamer Drilling Approach: A Double-Center Case Series.

Maxillary sinus membrane perforation has been reported as the most common intraoperative complication during sinus augmentation, potentially leading to postoperative infection and consequent loss of graft or even implant failure. Numerous anatomical factors have been demonstrated to affect membrane tearing. However, careful use of proper instrumentation, such as a reamer, seems to play an important role in minimizing the incidence of these complications. Hence, the aim of the present study was to (1) investigate the reliability of reamer drilling for lateral window preparation; (2) examine the

The fornix approach to the inferior orbit.

The fornix or transconjunctival approach to the orbital floor and inferior orbit provides excellent exposure for the surgeon managing orbital fractures. The technique is ideally suited for patients with isolated blowout fractures; however, it can be combined with other surgical incisions to provide wide exposure of the inferior orbit, zygoma, and maxilla for the repair of more complex midfacial fractures. The surgical technique provides excellent access to the inferior orbit for biopsy or excision of orbital tumors and excellent opportunity for surgically augmenting orbits with posttraumatic e

Localisation of osteogenic and osteoclastic cells in porous beta-tricalcium phosphate particles used for human maxillary sinus floor elevation.

We and others have shown earlier that porous beta-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) (Cerasorb) can be used in patients to augment the maxillary sinus floor prior to placement of oral dental implants. To better understand the transformation of TCP particles into bone tissue, we analyse here the appearance of cells with osteogenic or osteoclastic potential in relation to these particles. In biopsies taken at 6 months after sinus floor augmentation we observed bone growth into the TCP particles but also replacement by soft connective tissue. To identify possible osteoprogenitor cells in this tissue, his…

Safe Crestal Sinus Elevation Below 3 mm Residual Bone with Tissue-Level Implant Placement: A Case Report.

Background and Clinical Significance: Maxillary sinus augmentation is a well-established surgical procedure for dental implant placement in the posterior maxilla when the residual alveolar bone height is insufficient. Traditionally, the lateral approach has been preferred in cases with less than 4 mm of bone; however, the crestal approach has emerged as a less invasive alternative, particularly with the advent of advanced techniques and tools such as hydraulic pressure systems and dedicated osteotomy kits. Case Presentation: This case report presents the clinical management of a 68-year-old fe

Histological, radiological, and clinical outcomes of sinus floor elevation using a lateral approach for pre-/post-extraction of the severely compromised maxillary molars: a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The volume of residual alveolar bone is critical to the survival of dental implants. When the volume of alveolar bone in the posterior maxillary region is less than 4 mm, maxillary sinus floor elevation (MSFE) with the lateral approach is an effective option. Traditionally, this standard approach is usually conducted at 4-6 months after tooth extraction (standard MSFE). However, defective dentition due to extraction can impair mastication during the period of bone remodeling, especially if the molars on both sides are severely compromised and must be extracted. MSFE before extracti
