Perceived cognitive failures and quality of life for older adults with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with bipolar disorder (BD) commonly present with cognitive deficits (e.g., attention, memory, verbal fluency). Concomitantly, older adults with BD commonly report subjective or perceived cognitive failures. For this study, we confirmed a 3-factor model of cognitive failures first validated with older adults free of mental illness (i.e., forgetfulness, distractibility, false triggering). We then computed a structural equation model (SEM) demonstrating the construct validity of perceived cognitive errors in relation to quality of life with BD. Use of SEM enabled us to me

6 Hz corneal kindling in mice triggers neurobehavioral comorbidities accompanied by relevant changes in c-Fos immunoreactivity throughout the brain.

OBJECTIVE: Besides seizures, patients with epilepsy are affected by a variety of cognitive and psychiatric comorbidities that further impair their quality of life. The present study provides an in-depth characterization of the behavioral alterations induced by 6 Hz corneal kindling. Furthermore, we correlate these behavioral changes to alterations in c-Fos protein expression throughout the brain following kindling. METHODS: Adolescent male Naval Medical Research Institute (NMRI) mice were kindled via repetitive subconvulsive 6 Hz corneal stimulations until they reached the fully kindled state

Efficacy of metacognitive therapy for prolonged grief disorder: protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Studies of effective psychotherapy for individuals suffering from the effects of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) are scarce. This paper describes the protocol for an evaluation of a metacognitive therapy programme designed specifically for PGD, to reduce the psychological distress and loss of functioning resulting from bereavement. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The proposed trial comprises three phases. Phase 1 consists of a review of the literature and semistructured interviews with key members of the target population to inform the development of a metacognitive therapy programme for P

Laboratory-induced stress and craving among individuals with prescription opioid dependence.

BACKGROUND: Stress and conditioned drug cues have been implicated in the initiation, maintenance and relapse to substances of abuse. Although stress and drug cues are often encountered together, little research exists on whether stress potentiates the response to drug cues. METHOD: Participants (N=75) were 39 community recruited individuals with current prescription opioid (PO) dependence and 36 healthy controls. Participants stayed overnight in the hospital for one night and then completed laboratory testing the following morning. During laboratory testing, participants were randomly assigne

A new standardised and self-administered quality of life questionnaire specific to obstructive sleep apnoea.

BACKGROUND: A short, standardised, self-administered quality of life questionnaire would be a useful addition to the outcome measures in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) research. A study was therefore undertaken to validate a new OSA specific self-administered questionnaire (the Quebec Sleep Questionnaire, QSQ) for use in clinical trials. METHODS: This study followed a description of health related quality of life in patients with OSA. Construct validity and responsiveness were tested by comparing the baseline and changes in domain scores (daytime sleepiness, diurnal symptoms, nocturnal sympto

AI-assisted teams outperform AI-led teams but not human-only teams in assessing research reproducibility in quantitative social science.

Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT are transforming how scientists conduct and validate research, offering promise as tools to improve scientific reproducibility. However, computational reproducibility and error detection remain expensive and labor-intensive. We experimentally test how collaboration between researchers and LLM assistants influences the reproduction of quantitative social science findings across different levels of AI autonomy. We randomly assigned 288 researchers to 103 teams working under three conditions: human-only, AI-assisted (using ChatGPT as a collaborative to

Virtual Mentoring: Two Adaptive Models for Supporting Early-career Simulation Investigators in the Era of Social Distancing.

BACKGROUND: Early-career simulation investigators identify limited mentorship as a common barrier to disseminating scholarship and launching a successful academic career in emergency medicine (EM). Conferences often bridge this gap, but the COVID-19 pandemic has forced their indefinite delay. Virtual solutions are needed to capitalize on the breadth of national simulation research experts and grow mentorship in a postpandemic world. METHODS: We developed two complementary innovations to facilitate scholarship development and minimize COVID-associated career challenges resulting from social di

Fear of dementia in adults without diagnosed dementia: an updated systematic review of prevalence, measurement, and correlates.

BACKGROUND: Dementia is a major public health concern. Adults, particularly older adults may experience fear of dementia due to concerns about current and future cognitive decline, loss of independence, or increased burden on their families. Previous reviews have mainly focused on concepts, measurement, or assessment tools. Therefore, it is necessary to summarize current evidence on fear of dementia among adults without a diagnosis of dementia. OBJECTIVE: To primarily synthesize the reported prevalence or levels, measurement approaches, and associated factors of fear of dementia among adults

Psychometric properties and meaningful change thresholds for the QOL-E instrument in patients with myelodysplastic neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Myelodysplastic neoplasms (MDS) are characterized by ineffective hematopoiesis, peripheral blood cytopenias, and an increased risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia. One of the main treatment goals is improving quality of life (QoL), particularly for patients with lower-risk MDS (LR-MDS) who may live longer with compromised QoL. The QOL-E© is a patient-reported outcome (PRO) measure specifically developed to address the lack of a health-related QoL questionnaire for patients with MDS. The objective of this study was to evaluate the psychometric performance of the QOL-E in pa

The Aberrant Behavior Checklist for Fragile X Syndrome: A Qualitative Clinician Evaluation of Content Validity.

Objective: The current intense period of drug development for fragile X syndrome (FXS) and other neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) indications has highlighted the importance of behavioral outcome measures with strong psychometric properties and specifically content validity. The Aberrant Behavior Checklist-Community Edition (ABC-C), which has successfully been applied to autism spectrum disorder drug trials, has been revised for FXS (ABCFX) and is widely used for both clinical and research purposes. Despite its strong psychometric validation, the ABCFX and its parent measure have not been su

The Auditory-Cognitive Assessment of Speech Understanding: A Comprehensive Analysis of Construct Validity.

OBJECTIVES: Age-related hearing loss, the predominant global cause of hearing loss in middle-aged and older adults, presents a significant health and social problem, particularly affecting speech understanding. Beyond the auditory system, cognitive functions play a crucial role in speech understanding, especially in noisy environments. Although visual cognitive testing is commonly used as an intriguing alternative to mitigate the potential adverse effects of hearing loss on the perception of auditory test items, its efficacy within a hearing-related context is questionable due to construct dif
