Comparison of Ideal vs. Actual Body Weight Dosing of Intravenous Immunoglobulins for Immune Thrombocytopenia: A Retrospective Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is a weight-based therapy used to treat immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). Although pharmacokinetic data support the use of ideal body weight (IBW)-based dosing, clinical outcomes for this dosing strategy are lacking. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective, multicenter chart review was conducted across five institutions compared clinical outcomes and costs for patients with ITP treated with IVIG dosed via actual body weight (ABW) or IBW. Data were collected from November 1, 2019 to April 10, 2024. The primary outcome was early platelet response, …

Body Weight and Breast Cancer Treatment Experiences: Results From the Share Thoughts on a Breast Cancer Study.

PURPOSE: Differences in breast cancer recurrence and survival occur by body size; the role of treatment differences in these disparities has been underexplored. Our objective was to evaluate differences in treatments received, patient experiences of care, and treatment decision-making processes among breast cancer survivors by body size. METHODS: We used data from the Share Thoughts on Breast Cancer study. Participants (n = 1198) completed a survey that included information on demographics, treatments received, quality of care, and decision-making. We used descriptive statistics to evaluate d

Early Infancy Weight Gain Patterns Are Associated with Child Body Mass Index in Singletons but Not Twins.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between characteristics of infant weight trajectory and child body mass index (BMI) in twins compared with singletons. STUDY DESIGN: Data were extracted from the PROMISE study, an electronic health record-based cohort of pregnant individuals and their children born from 2004 to 2020 across community-based health care organizations in the United States. We compared 227 and 250 male and female twins with 13 952 and 13 500 male and female singletons, respectively, and secondary comparison groups of 2270 male and 2500 female singletons matched to twins on ges

Possible mechanisms of action of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists on blood pressure beyond body weight.

Glucagon-like petide-1 (GLP-1) potentiates insulin and suppresses glucagon secretion from the pancreas in response to the ingestion of nutrients. Due to a short plasma half-life of native GLP-1, several synthesized GLP-1 receptor agonists (RAs) were developed for type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) treatment. In clinical trials, GLP-1 RAs were shown to significantly lower blood pressure (BP) in addition to HbA1c and body weight (BW), indicating the possibility as anti-hypertensive medication of type 2 DM individuals. Although the hypotensive effect of GLP-1 RAs seems to be manifested by BW losing, o…

A Scoping Review of Instruments Used to Measure Weight and Body Composition in Infants Under 1 Year.

BACKGROUND: This scoping review identified existing outcome measurement instruments (OMIs) for weight and body composition in children ≤ 1 year of age and how they are used in clinical trials. This information will improve outcome selection in future trials. METHODS: We searched the EMBASE, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and PsycINFO up to September 2023, previous reviews, and the TOPCHILD collaboration registry. Screening was conducted independently in duplicate. We included studies reporting trials including healthy, full-term infants ≤ 1 year of age reporting at least one weight, weight gain, and/or bod

Development of site-specific predictive equations for epicutaneo-caval catheter insertion depth by body weight in neonates.

BACKGROUND: Epicutaneo-cava catheters (ECCs) are crucial for securing vital venous access in neonates, particularly in those with extremely low birth weight (ELBW). We aimed to formulate predictive equations for determining the appropriate insertion length of ECCs at various insertion sites by body weight in neonates. METHODS: Neonates receiving ECCs between January 2023 and June 2024 were included for this study. We extracted data from the electronic medical records including date of birth, gender, body weight, length, head circumference, gestational age at birth, insertion regions, ECC plac…

Unplanned Weight Loss and Sarcopenia Across Body Mass Index Categories in Nursing Homes-A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Nutritional risks in older adults, such as malnutrition and sarcopenia, are often underdiagnosed. Screening practices frequently rely on Unplanned Weight Loss (UPWL), potentially overlooking at-risk individuals. This study aims to assess the prevalence of nutritional risk, identified by UPWL and sarcopenia, across different body mass index categories in a nursing home (NH) population. Methods: Cross-sectional data were collected from an NH in a Danish municipality, including those of all self-reliant participants who consented and excluding those of terminally ill older adults. Predicting Mortality Risks Using Body Mass Index and Weight Loss at Admission in Patients with Heart Failure.

BACKGROUND: The association of the combination of body mass index (BMI) and weight change at admission with prognoses in patients with heart failure (HF) is unclear. Therefore, we investigated whether BMI and weight changes at admission affect mortality in patients with HF. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study lasted 99 months, starting in April 2014, and included 4,862 patients with HF from a Japanese real-world database. Cubic and thin-plate smoothing spline analyses were performed to investigate the association of BMI and weight changes with mortality. The percentage weight change was

Evaluation of Postoperative Outcomes After Enterostomy Closure in Low Body Weight Infants: A Multi-Center Retrospective Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The minimum weight for enterostomy closure (EC) in infants remains debated with the current acceptable cut-off of >2 kg. As enterostomy-related complications or high enterostomy output (>30cc/kg/d) may prohibit a premature infant from reaching 2 kg, additional data is needed to evaluate the safety of EC in infants <2 kg. The objective of this study was to evaluate postoperative outcomes in low body weight (<2 kg) infants undergoing EC compared to larger infants. METHODS: We performed a multi-center retrospective analysis from 1/1/2012-12/31/2022 of all infants (age <1 year) who we…

Influences of sex chromosome aneuploidy on height, weight, and body mass index in human childhood and adolescence.

Sex chromosome aneuploidies (SCAs) are collectively common conditions caused by carriage of a sex chromosome dosage other than XX for females and XY for males. Increases in sex chromosome dosage (SCD) have been shown to have an inverted-U association with height, but we lack combined studies of SCA effects on height and weight, and it is not known if any such effects vary with age. Here, we study norm-derived height and weight z-scores in 177 youth spanning 8 SCA karyotypes (XXX, XXY, XYY, XXXX, XXXY, XXYY, XXXXX, and XXXXY). We replicate a previously described inverted-U association between m

Mammalian target of rapamycin inhibition impacts energy homeostasis and induces sex-specific body weight loss in humans.

BACKGROUND: Previous data from a 2-year randomized controlled trial (CRAD001ADE12) indicated that mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibition by everolimus slowed cyst growth in patients with autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). During the trial, we noted body weight loss in some patients, particularly in women. We hypothesized that everolimus causes body weight reduction by reduced food intake and/or metabolic changes, which could lead to cachexia. METHODS: Within a sub-analysis of the CRAD001ADE12 trial, body weight course was investigated regarding sex-specific differe…
