Delayed migration of a Hem-o-Lok device into the bladder following laparoscopic radical prostatectomy has been described a small number of times in the literature. In this article, we describe the case of a 67-year-old gentleman who had undergone a laparoscopic radical prostatectomy and returned 8 months later for follow-up investigations due to intractable urinary symptoms. A flexible cystoscopy revealed a tight bladder neck. At this stage, the patient was listed for a rigid cystoscopy and bladder neck dilatation; during the procedure, a Hem-o-Lok (Weck Surgical Instruments, Teleflex Medical,

BACKGROUND: Complications caused by osteosynthetic material after cervical spine surgery are rare.
PATIENT AND METHOD: The case of a 36-year-old patient is reported, who suffered the extrusion of a screw and migration through the hypopharynx after ventral spondylodesis of a cervical spine fracture.
RESULT: Dysphagia occurred shortly after spinal surgery. The lack of one osteosynthesis screw in the spine was detected by X-ray and the material was located in the rectum. The screw had passed through the intestinal tract and was excreted spontaneously. An ENT medical control was carried out beca

Migration of intraabdominal catheters into the bowel is a well-known phenomenon of uncertain cause. Intragastric migration of adjustable gastric banding is not an uncommon complication, with a reported prevalence of 1-11% in most series. Migration of the connecting tube into the small bowel lumen or colonic lumen is very rare. We present a case study of a female who had adjustable gastric banding with persistent wound infection at the access port side that failed with conservative treatment. Migration of the connecting tube into the jejunal lumen was observed at laparoscopy. The connecting tub

We report a case of migration of a dental implant into the maxillary sinus and discuss the benefits of endoscopic transnasal removal of such implants. As the sole approach, this technique has rarely been described. The most commonly used technique for retrieval of dental implants is the Caldwell-Luc procedure. This, however, has certain morbidity associated with it and may compromise subsequent implant insertion.

In this case report, we describe a rare patient who experienced complete fracture of a sirolimus-eluting stent that was implanted for a focally calcified lesion of the right coronary artery ostium. Although the fractured fragment migrated somewhere in the systemic circulation, fortunately there were no complications. Implantation for ostial lesions of the right coronary artery should be performed with great care.

A 44-year-old woman with a history of transient ischemic attack underwent closure of atrial septal defect with a 26 mm Amplatzer device. The device was released without residual shunt or impingement on intracardiac structures. Within seconds, the transesophageal echocardiography showed the initial dislodgement of the device from the atrial septum and its consequent slipping back into the right atrium close to the tricuspid valve. Soon after the device disappeared from the right atrium and it could be founded into the right ventricle under the tricuspid valve. The patient was transferred in the

We report a rare and unique complication of ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt malfunction. A progressively expansile, CSF-containing occipital intradiploic cyst developed in a 15-year-old boy at the site of cystoperitoneal shunt draining a Dandy-Walker cyst; the shunt was placed when the boy was 4 years old. A proposed pathogenesis of the lesion is discussed.

Lead dislodgement and migration is a known complication after implantation of cardiac rhythm devices. We present a case of dislodgement of atrial lead of the CRT-D system and its migration into the device pocket. The device itself had rotated by 90 degrees but the right and left ventricular leads were not at all affected. The case is unique because the lead had coiled up and was lying behind the device in the pocket and hence was not even seen on a chest x-ray.

Alternative strategy of non-surgical closure of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is presently the first line of therapy. Several devices are being used for transcatheter closure of PDA. A four-year-old girl underwent a second attempt at PDA closure with an amplatzer device. However, after the deployment of the device it got dislodged into the right pulmonary artery hilum. Several attempts by catheter retrieval failed. The girl underwent surgical removal of the device which was complicated by pulmonary artery injury and subsequent repair was performed on cardiopulmonary bypass.

We report 2 cases of late spontaneous dislocation (disenclavation) of an iris-claw intraocular lens (IOL) after cataract surgery. Case 1 was a 65-year-old woman who presented with diminution of vision in the left eye. She had left eye cataract surgery 17 years ago with iris-claw IOL implantation. In the left eye, there was temporal disenclavation of IOL and the free end was touching the endothelium at 4 o'clock position. Case 2 was a 32-year-old man who first presented in 1994. He was a high myope and had cataract extraction in both eyes with iris-claw IOL implantation 7 years ago. He presente

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: Within a few weeks a 78-year-old woman presented three times in hospital with dramatic blood loss in need of transfusion. At her admission to hospital she complained about general weakness and painless melena. Within the last few years the patient had been treated with aspirin and phenprocoumon for chronic atrial fibrillation and coronary heart disease.
INVESTIGATIONS: Laboratory findings revealed a very low hemoglobin of 6 g/dl when the patient presented at hospital. The esophagogastroduodenoscopy was normal. The first colonoscopy detected diverticula of the l

PURPOSE: The present study evaluates the short- and midterm efficacy of a small intestinal submucosa (SIS) device for fallopian tube occlusion in rabbits.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a pilot study, several SIS device designs were tested for positional stability (absence of migration). The design selected for further testing consisted of a center of spongy SIS surrounded by an SIS sheet and held together by a 0.006-inch wire helix with two barbs. It was delivered on the tip of a short coaxial 3-F/5-F catheter set. Using this design, bilateral transuterine fallopian tube occlusion was performed i

The authors describe a patient who presented with acute onset of a lower back fluctuant mass 12 years after breast reconstruction with a latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap and silicone gel implant. Aspiration and subsequent surgical exploration revealed this mass to be free-flowing silicone gel within a cavity that was confluent with the breast implant capsule through an axillary tunnel. Excision of the back cavity, explantation with subtotal capsulectomy, and implant replacement resolved the problem. Although distant migration of extracapsular silicone gel from the breast to the axilla, a

A 34-year-old female attended the orthodontic department and was concerned with a midline diastema in the lower arch. The diagnosis made was pathological migration owing to the habitual placement of her tongue stud on the incisal edges of her mandibular central incisors, forcing them apart. This article describes the causes of pathological migration, and other possible complications due to oral piercings.

To accommodate the small size of the infant urethra, finer, more flexible tubes are often used for urinary catheterization in the pediatric intensive care units. These tubes have the ability to knot in the bladder, occasionally requiring surgical removal. The mechanism of knotting appears to result from excessive intravesical catheter coiling, and as the bladder decompresses the catheter tip can migrate through a coil thereby creating a knot. Review of the literature from 1975 to 2000 identified 19 cases of urethral catheter knotting in the pediatric bladder with two reports of prostatic ureth

Accidental dislodgement of an endoprosthesis into the right cavities or the pulmonary artery is a rarely described complication of percutaneous venous stenting. In such cases the migrated stent needs to be promptly extracted by percutaneous techniques in order to avoid any major complication. We report the first case of a delayed Strecker stent migration from the left innominate vein into the right pulmonary artery, successfully managed with anticoagulant therapy and a "wait-and-see" attitude. The advanced stage-disease (metastatic cancer patient) and the large-caliber stent in a disease-free
