Are emotions contagious? A conceptual review of studies in language education.

Considering the great role those affective variables play in language learning, it seems wise to hypothesize whether teacher and learner emotions are contagious in the language classroom or not. The existing literature on emotion contagion in other fields of study accepts this hypothesis and reveals significant points about the verbal and non-verbal cues for emotion contagion in class. The present paper introduces and defines the topic and goes on with summarizing the procedure of transmitting the emotion. Then, it reviews the existing research on emotion contagion in different areas and creat…

The Genetic and Molecular Basis of Developmental Language Disorder: A Review.

Language disorders are highly heritable and are influenced by complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors. Despite more than twenty years of research, we still lack critical understanding of the biological underpinnings of language. This review provides an overview of the genetic landscape of developmental language disorders (DLD), with an emphasis on the importance of defining the specific features (the phenotype) of DLD to inform gene discovery. We review the specific phenotype of DLD in the genetic literature, and the influence of historic variation in diagnostic inclusio…

[Therapy of Language Disorders in Childhood: A Guideline is long overdue].

In speech and language therapy of developmental language disorders, it is still largely unclear how evidence from individual therapeutic expertise integrates into clinical-practical procedure. Therefore, development of a therapy guideline addressing language disorders in childhood, especially for kindergarten- and preschool children, is long overdue for two reasons and poses a particular challenge: (1) Language disorders that are not associated with a comorbidity are given varying terms; (2) all language disorders are an interface between medical, psychological, educational, linguistic and lan…

The brain signature of emerging reading in two contrasting languages.

Despite dissimilarities among scripts, a universal hallmark of literacy in skilled readers is the convergent brain activity for print and speech. Little is known, however, whether this differs as a function of grapheme to phoneme transparency in beginning readers. Here we compare speech and orthographic processing circuits in two contrasting languages, Polish and English, in 100 7-year-old children performing fMRI language localizer tasks. Results show limited language variation, with speech-print convergence evident mostly in left frontotemporal perisylvian regions. Correlational and intersec…

Defining language disorders in children and adolescents with Noonan Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Noonan Syndrome is a developmental disorder characterized by a distinctive phenotype including facial dysmorphism, webbed neck, short stature, heart defects, and variable cognitive deficits as major features. Over the years, neuropsychological and behavioral studies explored alteration of cognitive functioning and related domains, such as learning, memory, and attention. To our knowledge, however, data concerning the language profile in this disorder is scarce. The aim of the present study was to detect specific language functioning combining nonverbal intelligence quotient and lan…

Giving voice: an oral history of speech and language therapy.

BACKGROUND: The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2020. The historical study of speech and language therapy (SLT) has been very limited. A small number of publications have traced the changes in the profession over time, but to date there has been no comprehensive work undertaken to gain an insight into the experiences of UK speech therapists who entered the newly formed profession after 1945. AIMS: To use an oral history methodology to explore the life stories of early members of the profession. METHODS & PROCEDURES: Participants were…

Reading in English as a Foreign Language by Spanish Children With Dyslexia.

It has been reported that children with dyslexia have difficulties with learning a second language. The English alphabetic code is opaque, and it has been stated that deep orthographies cause important problems in children with dyslexia. Considering the strong differences between the Spanish and English orthographic systems, we predicted English reading problems in Spanish-speaking children with dyslexia. The current study focused on English as a foreign language in a group of 22 Spanish children with dyslexia (8-12 year olds), compared to a control group matched for age, gender, grade, and so…

Voice assessment practices of speech and language therapists in Ireland.

Evidence supports the need for a multiparametric voice assessment incorporating objective and subjective assessment types. European guidelines and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association recommend a comprehensive voice assessment protocol; however, currently in Ireland, no national standards exist. This study investigates voice assessment practices of speech and language therapists (SLTs) in Ireland, with a particular interest in the use of objective instrumentation. It further elucidates what may act as barriers to the use of instrumental techniques, which has not been addressed in e…
