The relation between reading and externalizing behavior: a correlational meta-analysis.

Reading proficiency is important because it has life-long consequences and influences success in other academic areas. Many students with behavior problems are poor readers and many students with learning disabilities have more behavior problems than their typical peers. We conducted a correlational meta-analysis to examine the association between reading and externalizing behavior in students ages 5-12. We identified 33 studies that reported 88 effect sizes. Using a random-effects linear regression model with robust variance estimation, we found a significant, negative correlation (r= -0.1698

Resilience following emotional abuse by teachers: Insights from a cross-sectional study with Greek students.

An integrative socio-ecological model was developed to investigate the impact of emotional abuse by teachers on children's psychological functioning and test the role of social support and self-confidence as protective factors associated with resilience. Emotional abuse by teachers, social support from family, peers, school and a significant adult from the community, self-confidence and psychological functioning were assessed in a sample of young Greek school students aged 9-12 years (n=223, mean age=10.8, SD=0.885). Results revealed that exposure to emotional abuse by teachers predicted behav

Epicardial fat thickness, an emerging cardiometabolic risk factor, is increased in young adults born preterm.

Preterm birth and epicardial fat thickness (EFT) constitute novel risk factors for the onset of future adverse cardiovascular events. In total, 30 ex-extremely low birth weight (ex-ELBW) subjects (10 males, 20 females, aged 17-28) were enrolled and compared with 30 healthy peers. EFT was significantly higher (8.7±0.7 mm v. 5.6±0.9 mm; P<0.001) in ex-ELBW than in controls and was correlated with birth weight (r=-0.47, P=0.0009), gestational age (r=-0.39, P=0.03) and cardiac left ventricular mass (r=0.51, P=0.004). When excluding the influence of body mass index, birth weight was the sole remain

Brain network activity in monolingual and bilingual older adults.

Bilingual older adults typically have better performance on tasks of executive control (EC) than do their monolingual peers, but differences in brain activity due to language experience are not well understood. Based on studies showing a relation between the dynamic range of brain network activity and performance on EC tasks, we hypothesized that life-long bilingual older adults would show increased functional connectivity relative to monolinguals in networks related to EC. We assessed intrinsic functional connectivity and modulation of activity in task vs. fixation periods in two brain networ

Predictors of ventriculoperitoneal shunt among babies with intraventricular hemorrhage.

We aimed to identify medical care practices that influence the need for ventriculoperitoneal shunt among infants who develop intraventricular hemorrhage. We reviewed the medical records of 82 babies with ultrasonographically documented intraventricular hemorrhage. We compared the 10 babies who required a ventriculoperitoneal shunt to the 72 controls who had intraventricular hemorrhage, but did not require a ventriculoperitoneal shunt or die, prior to discharge. We considered maternal, perinatal, and neonatal risk factors as potential predictive variables. Maternal preeclampsia, prenatal steroi

Depth or Breadth? Domain-Specific Expertise and Cross-Domain Engagement in the Development of Scholarly Excellence.

Scholarly excellence is often equated with deep specialization within a single domain, a premise embedded in doctoral training, peer review, and academic-evaluation systems. However, research from the emerging "science of science," drawing on large-scale analyses of publications, citations, and career trajectories, suggests a more complex relationship between expertise, cross-domain engagement, and scholarly impact. This conceptual article synthesizes insights from the science of science, cognitive research on expertise, and organizational studies to examine the roles of domain-specific depth

Measuring beliefs about free will: a critical review of the Free Will Inventory.

This review critically evaluates the Free Will Inventory (FWI), a 29-item self-report instrument assessing beliefs about free will, determinism, and dualism, by situating it within broader philosophical and psychological frameworks and prior attempts to measure free will beliefs. To identify relevant peer-reviewed studies, a structured literature search using systematic principles was conducted to locate research that has validated or critiqued the FWI. The review also considers how free will belief is conceptualised and operationalised within the FWI, and the implications this has for interpr

Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and Female Fertility: Endocrine, Immune, and Microbiota Perspectives in Assisted Reproduction-A Narrative Review.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is the most prevalent autoimmune thyroid disorder, and it disproportionately affects women of reproductive age. Its impact on fertility and assisted reproductive technologies [ART] has become an area of growing clinical interest. Thyroid autoimmunity can influence female reproductive health through multiple interconnected mechanisms, including subtle thyroid hormone imbalances, reduced ovarian reserve, altered endometrial receptivity, and dysregulated immune responses. Subclinical hypothyroidism and the presence of anti-thyroid antibodies have been linked to increased m

Systematic Review of the Ovitrap Surveillance of Aedes Mosquitoes in Brazil (2012-2022).

Background: Arthropod-borne diseases primarily affect tropical and subtropical regions, exhibiting seasonal patterns that peak during hot and rainy months when conditions favor mosquito vector proliferation. Factors such as high temperatures, elevated humidity, rainfall, urbanization, and the abundance of natural and artificial breeding sites influence Aedes vector dynamics. In this context, arboviruses pose significant public health challenges, likely worsened by global warming. In Brazil, Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762) is the primary vector for yellow fever, dengue, chikungunya,
