Unilesional granulomatous pigmented purpuric dermatosis in a 7-year-old boy.

Granulomatous pigmented purpuric dermatoses (PPD) are rarely reported. We present a case of granulomatous PPD in a 7-year-old boy, one of only two pediatric cases with reported solitary disease. The pathogenesis of unilesional granulomatous PPD may be different from the more commonly described multifocal/widespread disease variant.

[Pigmented purpuric dermatoses].

In this review, we discuss pigmented purpuric dermatoses (PPD), which are a group of benign, chronic diseases characterised by purpuric eruption. PPD comprise mb. Schamberg, mb. Majocchi, Gougerot-Blum, lichen aureus, and Doucas and Kapetanakis eczematoid purpura. PPD can be seen in both genders and may affect all age groups. Purpura is often localised to the lower extremities, and it may be asymptomatic or pruritic. PPD is usually diagnosed upon recognition of classical clinical features, but the diagnosis can also be confirmed by a skin biopsy.

Pigmented Purpuric Dermatosis: A Review of the Literature.

The pigmented purpuric dermatoses are a group of benign, chronic diseases. The variants described to date represent different clinical presentations of the same entity, all having similar histopathologic characteristics. We provide an overview of the most common PPDs and describe their clinical, dermatopathologic, and epiluminescence features. PPDs are both rare and benign, and this, together with an as yet poor understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms involved, means that no standardized treatments exist. We review the treatments described to date. However, because most of the descriptions

Premature cell senescence in human skin: Dual face in chronic acquired pigmentary disorders.

Although senescence was originally described as an in vitro acquired cellular characteristic, it was recently recognized that senescence is physiologically and pathologically involved in aging and age-related diseases in vivo. The definition of cellular senescence has expanded to include the growth arrest caused by various cellular stresses, including DNA damage, inadequate mitochondria function, activated oncogene or tumor suppressor genes and oxidative stress. While senescence in normal aging involves various tissues over time and contributes to a decline in tissue function even with healthy

Laser-assisted photodynamic therapy for actinic keratosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an effective intervention for actinic keratosis and field cancerization. Ablative fractional lasers may facilitate the delivery of photosensitizers and thereby improve the effects of PDT. OBJECTIVE: To summarize the current evidence on the efficacy and safety of laser-assisted PDT. METHODS: We performed a systematic literature research in Medline, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and hand-searched pertinent trial registers for eligible randomized controlled trials. Results from individual studies were pooled by using a r

Quantifying Abdominal Pigmentation in Drosophila melanogaster.

Pigmentation is a morphologically simple but highly variable trait that often has adaptive significance. It has served extensively as a model for understanding the development and evolution of morphological phenotypes. Abdominal pigmentation in Drosophila melanogaster has been particularly useful, allowing researchers to identify the loci that underlie inter- and intraspecific variations in morphology. Hitherto, however, D. melanogaster abdominal pigmentation has been largely assayed qualitatively, through scoring, rather than quantitatively, which limits the forms of statistical analysis that

Pigmented lesions of the nail unit.

Longitudinal melanonychia originates from pigmented and/or melanocytic lesions of the nail unit. It may be a less-common entity encountered in dermatologic practice, but it is often a vexing one. Lesions occurring at this location present particular problems due to the unfamiliarity with clinical assessment, their relative inaccessibility, requiring more surgical finesse, and the lack of experience with histopathologic examination. Obtaining a specimen sufficient for interpretation is one of the main impediments to successful diagnosis in this setting. Most pigmented bands are benign, due to m

Mongolian spots.

Mongolian spots (MS) are birthmarks that are present at birth and their most common location is sacrococcygeal or lumbar area. Lesions may be single or multiple and usually involve < 5% total body surface area. They are macular and round, oval or irregular in shape. The color varies from blue to greenish, gray, black or a combination of any of the above. The size varies from few to more than 20 centimetres. Pigmentation is most intense at the age of one year and gradually fades thereafter. It is rarely seen after the age of 6 years. Aberrant MS over occiput, temple, mandibular area, shoulders

Dyschromatosis symmetrica hereditaria: report of a sporadic case.

A group of pigment disorders is included under the denomination of "dyschromatosis". Dyschromatosis symmetrica hereditaria is a dominant autosomal genodermatosis mostly reported in Eastern countries. It has been rarely reported in nonoriental races and spontaneous cases are scarce. We report a spontaneous case in the West, a boy 6 years of age, with a typical presentation and who was confused initially with vitiligo.

Dyschromatosis universalis hereditaria: two cases.

Dyschromatosis universalis hereditaria is a rare genodermatosis reported initially and mainly in Japan. However, subsequent cases have been reported from other countries. We describe two Tunisian cases of dyschromatosis universalis hereditaria in a 3-year-old and a 3-month-old girl. They presented to our department with asymptomatic progressive mottled pigmentation over the trunk and limbs, which had been noted since birth and had become more noticeable with age. Palms and soles were also affected in the first case. The two patients did not have any systemic or other cutaneous illness. They we

Use of the Q-switched 755-nm alexandrite laser to treat recalcitrant pigment after depigmentation therapy for vitiligo.

BACKGROUND: In patients with extensive vitiligo, depigmentation therapy is often preferred over attempts to restore skin color. Bleaching creams sometimes fail to permanently depigment the skin, leaving disfiguring pigmented patches. This recalcitrant pigmentation may be treated with Q-switched laser technology. OBJECTIVE: The objective was use the Q-switched alexandrite laser to treat recalcitrant pigmentation after unsuccessful attempts at total-body depigmentation for vitiligo. METHODS: We have attempted to destroy the remaining melanin pigmentation in a 68-year-old woman with vitiligo by

Pigmentary anomalies in ataxia--telangiectasia: a clue to diagnosis and an example of twin spotting.

A 6-year-old girl with consanguineous parents presented with a history of progressive ataxia and patchy, segmental pigmentary changes, some reminiscent of Blaschko's lines. There was no evidence of oculocutaneous telangiectases or signs of immunodeficiency. A clinical diagnosis of ataxia--telangiectasia (AT) was suggested and confirmed by the presence of a low serum IgA, raised alpha-fetoprotein and chromosomal rearrangements of chromosomes 7 and 14. This case of AT is unique for having hypopigmentation and hyperpigmented patches adjacent to each other, which is a feature that has been describ
