Segmentation and Image Analysis of Abnormal Lungs at CT: Current Approaches, Challenges, and Future Trends.

The computer-based process of identifying the boundaries of lung from surrounding thoracic tissue on computed tomographic (CT) images, which is called segmentation, is a vital first step in radiologic pulmonary image analysis. Many algorithms and software platforms provide image segmentation routines for quantification of lung abnormalities; however, nearly all of the current image segmentation approaches apply well only if the lungs exhibit minimal or no pathologic conditions. When moderate to high amounts of disease or abnormalities with a challenging shape or appearance exist in the lungs,

Volumetric upper airway assessment in patients with transverse maxillary deficiency after surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion.

Transverse maxillary deficiency is commonly found in patients with sleep apnea and is also related to abnormal breathing patterns. Maxillary expansion procedures promote widening of the nasal floor and reduce the resistance to airflow, and have a positive influence on nasopharynx function. In order to evaluate volume changes in the upper airway, 15 adult patients with transverse maxillary deficiency underwent surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (RME) until a slight overcorrection of the crossbite was obtained. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) volumetric images were obtained at th

Automated image-matching technique for comparative diagnosis of the liver on CT examination.

When interpreting enhanced computer tomography (CT) images of the upper abdomen, radiologists visually select a set of images of the same anatomical positions from two or more CT image series (i.e., non-enhanced and contrast-enhanced CT images at arterial and delayed phase) to depict and to characterize any abnormalities. The same process is also necessary to create subtraction images by computer. We have developed an automated image selection system using a template-matching technique that allows the recognition of image sets at the same anatomical position from two CT image series. Using the

[Extraction of orbital foreign bodies using a new kind of image processing system].

We present a new localization system in orbital surgery. The procedure is based on the linkage of two methods. A preoperative thin-layer CT scan is taken and the image data are fed into a high-capacity computer which computes a three-dimensional model of the orbit. Intraoperatively, the volume model of the skull is linked to a mechanical arm for position measurement. Surgical instruments can be mounted to this arm. The computer then projects the position of the instrument into the volume model of the orbit, so that the surgeon can follow the movements of his instruments on the monitor. The sur
