Injury patterns in Division I collegiate swimming.

BACKGROUND: In the last 25 years, it is estimated that over 42,000 male and female swimmers have competed at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I-A level. Despite the magnitude of these numbers, little is known about the epidemiology of collegiate swimming injuries. Purpose To describe the pattern of injuries incurred for one NCAA Division I collegiate men's and women's swimming team over 5 seasons. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study. METHODS: Musculoskeletal and head injuries reported in the Sports Injury Management System for a Division I swimming team f

Results of treatment of luxatio erecta (inferior shoulder dislocation).

HYPOTHESIS: Traumatic inferior shoulder dislocation (luxatio erecta) injuries are rare, comprising less than 0.5% of all shoulder dislocations. Few cases have been reported, and the outcome of treatment has been ill defined. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1968 and 2000, 18 patients (20 shoulders) with luxatio erecta were evaluated at our institution. Two patients (2 shoulders) were lost to follow-up, leaving 16 patients (18 shoulders) for long-term follow-up (average, 9 years). Associated injuries included peripheral nerve injury, humeral fracture, acromial fracture, and rotator cuff tear. Al

The Relationship Between Preseason Upper Extremity Function, Pain, and Training and Normalized Division III Collegiate Swimming Performance.

CONTEXT: Shoulder injuries comprise the largest proportion of swimming injuries, and a large percentage of swimmers participate with pain. Therefore, it is assumed that shoulder pain decreases performance, but researchers have not compared collegiate swimmers' performance with and without pain. OBJECTIVES: (1) To determine if individual swimmers' shoulder pain and function are associated with a change in normalized swimming performance over a season, (2) to determine if differences in normalized swimming performance exist among 3 collegiate teams, and (3) to qualitatively describe and compare…

Factors influencing shoulder stiffness after open reduction and internal fixation of proximal humeral fractures.

OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to investigate the factors associated with shoulder stiffness following open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of proximal humeral fractures. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The retrospective study included a total of 151 patients who underwent ORIF of proximal humeral fractures between January 2016 and May 2021. Based on their shoulder joint motion at the latest follow-up, the patients were divided into two groups. The stiffness group (n=32; 8 males, 24 females; mean age: 62.4±9.3 years; range, 31 to 79 years), exhibited restricted shoulder forward flexion (<120°), lim

Sports injuries in women: sex- and gender-based differences in etiology and prevention.

There has been a significant increase in the participation of women in sports at all levels, especially after the enactment of the Title IX Education Amendment in 1972. This increased participation at all levels has resulted in more women sustaining sports injuries. Data on sex- and gender-based differences in all organ systems, including the musculoskeletal system, are beign gathered. It is important to review some of the areas of sex- and gender-based differences in sports injuries for which there is significant research, such as osteoporosis, the female athlete triad, and anterior cruciate

The evaluation and treatment of the injured acromioclavicular joint in athletes.

Injuries to the acromioclavicular joint are among the most commonly occurring problems in the athletic patient population. However, these injuries are often confused with other problems associated with the shoulder complex. This confusion was noted by Hippocrates (460-377 BC), who realized that acromioclavicular dislocation often was misdiagnosed as a glenohumeral injury. Galen (129-199 AD) experienced an acromioclavicular dislocation and could not tolerate the tight bandaging recommended at the time and thus became one of the earliest noncompliant patients. The understanding of acromioclavicu

Childhood and Adolescent Sports-Related Overuse Injuries.

Childhood and adolescent sports participation is encouraged because of health and wellness benefits. However, the increasing number of young athletes means there is the potential for more sports-related overuse injuries. Most youth sports injuries occur at the bone's relatively weaker growth centers: the epiphyses and apophyses. Little league shoulder and elbow are common overuse injuries in baseball and other single-arm dominant sports. Little league shoulder is a Salter-Harris fracture of the proximal humerus, and little league elbow is an apophysitis of the medial epicondyle. In both injuri

Posterior sternoclavicular Salter-Harris fracture-dislocation in a patient with unossified medial clavicle epiphysis.

Sternoclavicular injuries are relatively rare, composing less than 1 % of all musculoskeletal fractures or dislocations. When sternoclavicular injuries do occur, they typically present as an isolated dislocation of the sternoclavicular joint without associated fracture of the clavicle or manubrium. However, in patients with unfused medial clavicle physis, sternoclavicular joint injuries can present as a fracture-dislocation through the unfused physis. These physeal injuries are important to recognize as the displaced epiphysis can block reduction of the sternoclavicular joint. We present a cas

Biomechanics of overhand throwing with implications for injuries.

Proper throwing mechanics may enable an athlete to achieve maximum performance with minimum chance of injury. While quantifiable differences do exist in proper mechanics for various sports, certain similarities are found in all overhand throws. One essential property is the utilisation of a kinetic chain to generate and transfer energy from the larger body parts to the smaller, more injury-prone upper extremity. This kinetic chain in throwing includes the following sequence of motions: stride, pelvis rotation, upper torso rotation, elbow extension, shoulder internal rotation and wrist flexion.

MRI findings in Little Leaguer's shoulder.

Little leaguer's shoulder, a stress injury of the proximal humeral physis, should be considered in the differential diagnosis for an adolescent baseball player with shoulder pain, especially if the player is pitching regularly in a competitive environment. While roentgenographs may or may not be helpful, depending on the duration and severity of the injury, we report the MRI appearance of a case of little leaguer's shoulder. We found MRI helpful in diagnosing injury to the growth plate that was radiographically occult; furthermore, we were able to document the patient's progress with a follow-

SLAP lesions of the shoulder.

A specific pattern of injury to the superior labrum of the shoulder was identified arthroscopically in twenty-seven patients included in a retrospective review of more than 700 shoulder arthroscopies performed at our institution. The injury of the superior labrum begins posteriorly and extends anteriorly, stopping before or at the mid-glenoid notch and including the "anchor" of the biceps tendon to the labrum. We have labeled this injury a "SLAP lesion" (Superior Labrum Anterior and Posterior). There were 23 males and four females with an average age of 37.5 years. Time from injury to surgery

Integrated surgical management of forequarter lateral implosion injury: Technical considerations and early outcomes.

Concomitant ipsilateral fractures of the clavicle, scapula, and ribs, termed forequarter lateral implosion injury, represent a severe but underrecognized injury pattern resulting from high-energy lateral shoulder trauma. While the surgical indications for isolated chest wall and shoulder girdle injuries are well described, guidance on the integrated management of this combined injury complex remains limited. We describe a reproducible multidisciplinary approach for the concurrent surgical fixation of clavicle, scapula, and rib fractures, illustrated through two cases of forequarter lateral imp

[Immobilization recommendations following upper limb trauma - literature review].

Upper limb injuries are common and account for a significant number of emergency department and primary care consultations. While surgery for these injuries is well-documented, nonoperative treatments, particularly the optimal duration of immobilization, remain understudied. These durations are often based on institutional dogma rather than scientific evidence, which have gone unchallenged for years. However, prolonged immobilization can lead to increased morbidity or even complications for patients. The aim of this systematic literature review is to update the recommendations regarding optima

Diagnostic Neuromuscular Ultrasonography of Spinal Accessory Nerve Injury After Cosmetic Rhytidectomy.

Iatrogenic spinal accessory nerve (SAN) injuries can occur as complications of posterior triangle of the neck surgery, resulting in lateral scapular winging and a shoulder droop. Rarely has this complication been described after a cosmetic rhytidectomy (face-lift procedure). Here, we present two cases of iatrogenic SAN injuries that occurred after cosmetic rhytidectomies. The use of electrodiagnostic and ultrasound examinations provides invaluable information to assess peripheral nerve injuries. Electrodiagnostic testing can confirm the presence and severity of the injury, while ultrasound can

Management of Upper Extremity Injury in Divers.

Modern competitive diving-especially platform diving-applies dramatic stress to the upper extremity. Some stress occurs during handstand-style takeoffs, but more force is delivered to the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder during hands-first entry. Hand positions that minimize the amount of splash result in forceful wrist extension. This repetitive impact can lead to chronic upper extremity pain and acute injuries that require operative intervention. Many divers use taping and bracing to prevent or treat this type of injury, but these are only modestly effective. Although minor injuries can impr
