State-Dependent tACS Effects Reveal the Potential Causal Role of Prestimulus Alpha Traveling Waves in Visual Contrast Detection.

The intricate relationship between prestimulus alpha oscillations and visual contrast detection variability has been the focus of numerous studies. However, the causal impact of prestimulus alpha traveling waves on visual contrast detection remains largely unexplored. In our research, we sought to discern the causal link between prestimulus alpha traveling waves and visual contrast detection across different levels of mental fatigue. Using electroencephalography alongside a visual detection task with 30 healthy adults (13 females; 17 males), we identified a robust negative correlation between

Heat strain, volume depletion and kidney function in California agricultural workers.

BACKGROUND: Agricultural work can expose workers to increased risk of heat strain and volume depletion due to repeated exposures to high ambient temperatures, arduous physical exertion and limited rehydration. These risk factors may result in acute kidney injury (AKI). METHODS: We estimated AKI cumulative incidence in a convenience sample of 283 agricultural workers based on elevations of serum creatinine between preshift and postshift blood samples. Heat strain was assessed based on changes in core body temperature and heart rate. Volume depletion was assessed using changes in body mass over

An investigation of care-based vs. rule-based morality in frontotemporal dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and healthy controls.

Behavioral changes in dementia, especially behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), may result in alterations in moral reasoning. Investigators have not clarified whether these alterations reflect differential impairment of care-based vs. rule-based moral behavior. This study investigated 18 bvFTD patients, 22 early onset Alzheimer's disease (eAD) patients, and 20 healthy age-matched controls on care-based and rule-based items from the Moral Behavioral Inventory and the Social Norms Questionnaire, neuropsychological measures, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) regions of interest.

Effect of shoe inserts on kinematics, center of pressure, and leg joint moments during running.

PURPOSE: The purposes of this project were to assess the effect of four different shoe inserts on the path of the center of pressure (COP), to quantify the effect of these inserts on selected knee joint moments during running, and to assess the potential of COP data to predict the effects of inserts/orthotics on knee joint moments. METHODS: Kinematics for the lower extremities, resultant ankle and knee joint moments, and the path of the COP were collected from the right foot of 15 male subjects while running heel-toe with five different shoe inserts (full or half with 4.5-mm postings). The role of the Th-1 to Th-2 shift of the cytokine profiles of CD4 helper cells in the pathogenesis of autoimmune and hypercatabolic diseases.

The task of the immune system is the continuous elimination of endogenous cellular debris and the elimination, when necessary, of exogenous structures. It therefore seems useful and practical to add to the paradigms 'self' and 'not self' the term 'altered self'. The concept of stress, introduced by W. B. Cannon and H. Selye in the 1930s, covers the wide range of aggressive environmental influences which for their part result in a uniform shift of the metabolism in the direction of catabolism. This results from the activation of the neuroendocrine stress axis, hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenals, a

The need for adjusting the script; characteristics and future directions of deployable healthcare facilities for climate-change-induced disasters.

Climate change increasingly disrupts public health through frequent, severe disasters, rendering traditional deployable hospitals inadequate for unpredictable climate demands. This paper examines the unique requirements for healthcare infrastructure in extreme environments and proposes a shift toward advanced technological solutions, including air-inflated structures, smart materials, 3D printing, and autonomous robotics. We advocate for modular, sustainable, and age-friendly designs that integrate mental health and community services and remain in the field beyond the acute disaster phase, to

Diagnosis and Treatment of Culture-Negative Periprosthetic Joint Infection.

Identification of the causative organism(s) in periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a challenging task. The shortcomings of traditional cultures have been emphasized in recent literature, culminating in a clinical entity known as "culture-negative PJI." Amidst the growing burden of biofilm infections that are inherently difficult to culture, the field of clinical microbiology has seen a paradigm shift from culture-based to molecular-based methods. These novel techniques hold much promise in the demystification of culture-negative PJI and revolutionization of the microbiology laboratory. Thi

Resistance of bacteria to antibacterial agents: report of Task Force 2.

The use of a growing number of antibacterial agents over the past half century has elicited a widespread deployment of genes for resistance to these agents in populations of bacteria throughout the world. Task Force 2 of the NIH Study on Antibiotic Use and Antibiotic Resistance Worldwide found that data on prevalence of resistance was fragmentary and underanalyzed but indicative of several trends. Resistance to older antibacterial agents appears to have stabilized overall, but shifts of resistance genes into new strains and species have continued to cause new clinical problems. Resistance to n

Task-specific neural networks for medical imaging using pretrained fragments.

The StitchNet framework introduced a paradigm shift in Neural Architecture Search (NAS) by proposing the construction of neural networks from pre-trained fragments. This approach reduces computational costs and enables task-specific model creation without retraining entire networks. Building on this foundation, our study evaluates the practical application of StitchNet in constructing neural networks tailored to medical image classification tasks. Specifically, we assess its performance on a dataset of retinal images classified into three categories: healthy, dry, and wet AMD (Age-Related Macu

Context-dependent interaction between goal-directed and habitual control under time pressure.

Current theories of habitual behaviour assume that habits and goal-directed actions are controlled by two separate but interacting systems. However, it is not clear how these systems interact when actions must be made under time pressure. We use a task that induces habitual action sequences while requiring participants to perform goal-directed actions that are either congruent or incongruent with the habit. This task allows for the concurrent measurement of goal-directed and habitual behaviour, permitting a nuanced analysis of the interaction between these two control modes in a sample of 60 p

Temporally parallel facilitation of same-colored objects beyond spatial selection.

In a probabilistic spatial cueing experiment, we cued one out of four objects/arcs that were arranged in a circle to test whether the cued arc/object would result in strictly object-based processing restricting facilitation of features to the cued object, or whether we observe global feature-based spread across object boundaries. Four arcs flickered at different frequencies, respectively, to evoke steady state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs), allowing to investigate neural temporal dynamics in the early visual cortex following the presentation of the spatial cue. Initially, all arcs had iden

Muscle Synergy Analysis of Healthy Subjects Using a Soft Elbow Exosuit During Load-Carrying Tasks.

Soft assistive wearable robotics, or soft exosuits, have shown great potential in enhancing human motor function while preserving the user's natural movement. They are increasingly used to reduce fatigue and the risk of injury during physically demanding tasks and everyday activities. A deeper understanding of how assistive forces from soft exoskeletons influence muscle coordination during various tasks is crucial for developing optimized control and rehabilitation strategies for these devices. This study investigates muscle synergies in healthy participants carrying loads, as often performed

A Comparison of Rapid Rule-Learning Strategies in Humans and Monkeys.

Interspecies comparisons are key to deriving an understanding of the behavioral and neural correlates of human cognition from animal models. We perform a detailed comparison of the strategies of female macaque monkeys to male and female humans on a variant of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), a widely studied and applied task that provides a multiattribute measure of cognitive function and depends on the frontal lobe. WCST performance requires the inference of a rule change given ambiguous feedback. We found that well-trained monkeys infer new rules three times more slowly than minimally

rTMS of medial parieto-occipital cortex interferes with attentional reorienting during attention and reaching tasks.

Unexpected changes in the location of a target for an upcoming action require both attentional reorienting and motor planning update. In both macaque and human brain, the medial posterior parietal cortex is involved in both phenomena but its causal role is still unclear. Here we used on-line rTMS over the putative human V6A (pV6A), a reach-related region in the dorsal part of the anterior bank of the parieto-occipital sulcus, during an attention and a reaching task requiring covert shifts of attention and planning of reaching movements toward cued targets in space. We found that rTMS increased

Variations in the GRIN2B gene are associated with risky decision-making.

The dopaminergic system is known to modulate decision-making. As N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors strongly influence dopaminergic function, it is conceivable that the glutamatergic system is also involved in decision-making. We examined whether polymorphisms in the N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor 2B subunit gene (GRIN2B) influence decision-making using the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). In total, 245 (n = 245, 127 female) healthy German students were included in the analysis. Two synonymous SNPs in exon 13, rs1806191 (H1178H) and rs1806201 (T888T) showed the strongest association with aspects of

Effect of cognitive bias modification training on body image dissatisfaction in adolescents with anorexia nervosa or depression-a pilot feasibility randomized controlled crossover study.

INTRODUCTION: Body image disturbance presents transdiagnostically with an impact on the development and maintenance of psychiatric disorders. Addressing body image disturbance, a cognitive bias modification training (CBM) was developed using a two-alternative forced choice task (2-AFC) to alter patients' individual perceptual boundary between what they classify as a fat versus a thin body. This pilot study aimed to evaluate, for the first time, the paradigm's feasibility and efficacy in adolescents in a clinical context. METHODS: This pilot study included adolescent inpatients aged 13-17 year
