INTRODUCTION: Brachial plexus injuries are usually a result of road traffic accidents and a cause of severe disability that typically affects young adult males. In 2010, a national centre was established for referral of these cases from Danish trauma centres. In this paper, we report on our surgical activity and reflect on the role for this new national centre.
METHODS: Records from all our operated patients were reviewed retrospectively. For outcome analysis, we focused on patients who had sustained traction injuries with a surgical follow-up exceeding one year. We used either nerve grafting…

BACKGROUND: Neglected trauma is a common problem faced by Orthopaedic surgeons practicing in developing countries. Nothing much in English literature is available regarding the practical difficulties and guidelines for treating neglected trauma of long bones.
METHODS: In our institution from November 2003 to October 2009 we treated 25 cases of neglected fracture of shaft of femur. Patients underwent either of three types of management protocols depending upon the preoperative manual traction radiographs. The fracture was fixed with open interlocking nail. Primary bone grafting and bone shorte…

Cervical radiculopathy is the result of cervical nerve root pathology that may lead to chronic pain and disability. Although manual therapy interventions including cervical traction and neural mobilization have been advocated to decrease pain and disability caused by cervical radiculopathy, their analgesic effect has been questioned due to the low quality of research evidence. The purpose of this paper is to present the effect of cervical traction combined with neural mobilization on pain and disability in a patient experiencing cervical radiculopathy. A 52-year-old woman presented with a 2 mo…

BACKGROUND: To analyse vitrectomy results in diabetic eyes with retinal traction detachment and to investigate which variables are associated with a worse visual outcome.
METHODS: Forty-four diabetic eyes (33 patients) with central retinal traction detachment were analyzed retrospectively.
RESULTS: After a median follow-up of 10 months, median visual acuity significantly improved from 20/800 to 20/160 (P=0.02), despite the fact that the majority of patients had a long-standing macular traction detachment (median 120 days). Twenty-two eyes (50%) achieved a visual acuity of >20/200. The retina…

We report on a case of a 19-year-old male student who sustained a hyperextension injury to his left knee while playing rugby, which resulted in a traction injury of the common peroneal nerve and multiple ligamentous injuries at the knee joint. The damaged part of the common peroneal nerve was resected, and an end-to-end suture was performed, because the gap between the nerve ends was small enough to allow closure with little mobilization. Now, 2.5 years after the surgery, the patient shows remarkable recovery. This result suggests that end-to-end suture is an ideal procedure for nerve traction…

Nine patients with chronic severe pain due to end-stage traction neuritis of an intact peripheral nerve underwent external neurolysis and epineurectomy or epineurectomy and internal neurolysis followed by circumferential wrapping of the involved segment of nerve with a pedicle flap or free flap consisting of either subcutaneous fat tissue, fascia, or muscle. Seven patients (77%) followed for between 1 and 5 years had substantial relief of pain. Two patients (22%) had no decrease in their pain at all. Circumferential wrapping may cushion the nerve from external pressure on the overlying skin, m…

A case report is presented of a 43-year-old woman who underwent cyclectomy for malignant melanoma of the ciliary body of the left eye. One year after operation, the eye was enucleated because of inoperable total traction retinal detachment. The pathologic examination revealed no signs of local recurrence. At five-year follow-up, no systemic spread was found.

The continuous traction of firmly grown-in collar electrodes from the right ventricle is a simple technique poor in complications with a high success rate, which can be recommended taking into consideration the indications in the failure of the immediate manual extraction and which can be performed in every centre for cardiac pacemakers. Apart from the consideration of adequate informations in literature this evidence above all depends on the evaluation of data of 29 cases from 10 centres for cardiac pacemakers.

The study was undertaken to examine the effect of posteroanterior traction in an 11-year-old boy with maxillonasal dysplasia. Movement of the maxillary bones and of the mandible was recorded, by means of roentgen stereophotogrammetry, in relationship to the frontal bone during and after treatment. In the examined child face-mask therapy mainly influenced the position of the mandible while the recorded advancement of the maxillary bones was slight (0.6 mm.). It is possible that the limited maxillary response to traction may be due to insufficient growth capacity of the circummaxillary sutures i…

BACKGROUND: Perineal post countertraction during hip arthroscopy risks complications. Postless traction avoids the perineal post but requires understanding the factors influencing traction force to optimize safety. This study investigated how gender, body mass index (BMI), traction states, hip rotation, lateral center-edge angle (LCEA), alpha angle, and femoral anteversion affect traction force during postless hip arthroscopy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included patients undergoing postless hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) between October 20…

Testicular torsion is a urologic emergency caused by twisting of the spermatic cord, resulting in compromised testicular perfusion. Ischemia duration is the most important predictor of testicular salvage, and definitive surgical management should be rapidly pursued. While awaiting surgery, manual detorsion may restore blood flow and provide symptomatic relief. The testicular torsion traction technique (TTTT) is a bedside maneuver combining downward traction with external rotation of the affected testicle. A 14-year-old male presented to the emergency department with acute onset of 10/10 left t…

BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate the concordance between facial flushing assessment using an objective color sensor and subjective visual assessment in patients with mesenteric traction syndrome (MTS), to inform the design of a future large-scale study that incorporates objective diagnostic tools. METHODS: In this prospective pilot study, we enrolled adult patients who underwent pancreatectomy. Anesthesiologists assessed the degree of facial flushing subjectively using a scale of levels 0–2. Simultaneously, the Nix color sensor objectively measured the facial redness (a-value) at four facial p…

BACKGROUND: Mesenteric traction syndrome (MTS) is characterized by tachycardia, hypotension, and facial flushing during abdominal surgery. Previous studies suggest that severe MTS is associated with increased complications as well as endothelial damage. Whereas MTS was previously diagnosed based on subjective flushing, a recent study has validated an objective measure of facial flushing using laser speckle contrast imaging. However, no studies have yet examined the association between objectively diagnosed severe MTS (qsMTS), endothelial dysfunction, and postoperative complications.

The management of impacted mandibular premolars, often requiring orthodontic traction to preserve teeth, is frequently complicated by the lack of precise three-dimensional control in conventional traction techniques, which can lead to prolonged treatment, iatrogenic damage, or failure. This case series demonstrates the efficacy of a novel approach utilizing buccal-shelf mini-implants as skeletal anchorage for customized cantilever springs in the orthodontic traction of impacted mandibular premolars. Three patients with varying impaction patterns (a 34-year-old male with tooth 35, an 11-year-ol…

BACKGROUND: Open abdomens (OA) remain a major source of morbidity and mortality in trauma and emergency general surgery (EGS). Fascial traction has been shown to improve primary closure of the OA. However, reports on the incidence of incisional hernias (IH) after OA closure are scarce. The purpose of this study was to evaluate factors associated with primary fascial closure and the development of IH in OA managed with two different methods.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of all OA patients with midline laparotomies for trauma and EGS (January 2019 to October 2024) in a level 1 trauma c…
