The correct assessment of a solitary red nodule in clinical practice is of crucial importance, amelanotic melanoma being the most important differential diagnosis. Dermoscopy is nowadays a pivotal tool in the management of skin tumors, however it has some limitations in the evaluation of nonpigmented lesions, in which the diagnosis is merely based on the evaluation of the vascular pattern. Recently, reflectance confocal microscopy has been introduced as a new, noninvasive technique for the diagnosis of skin lesions. Confocal microscopy provides skin imaging in vivo at cellular level resolution

Vascular skin lesions comprise a wide and heterogeneous group of malformations and tumors that can be correctly diagnosed based on natural history and physical examination. However, considering the high incidence of such lesions, a great number of them can be misdiagnosed. In addition, it is not so rare that an aggressive amelanotic melanoma can be misdiagnosed as a vascular lesion. In this regard, dermoscopy and confocal laser microscopy examination can play a central role in increasing the specificity of the diagnosis of such lesions. In fact, the superiority of these tools over clinical exa

Intraoral fibrous overgrowths of the soft tissues are relatively common and may be benign reactive or neoplastic lesions. A series of 10 lesions is presented which included pyogenic granuloma, fibroma and peripheral ossifying fibroma. Almost all the lesions occurred in the second and third decades and were present in the anterior segment of the jaws, with a distinct female predilection. Majority of these lesions were asymptomatic and the patients reported for treatment only due to the discomfort during function. Histopathologic examinations were done for diagnosis of these lesions. Surgical ex

Angiosarcoma is a relatively rare soft tissue tumour. It usually occurs in the head and neck, and especially in the scalp, in elderly people. Its presentation varies from a small plaque to multifocal nodules. The treatment depends on the extent of the disease. Most cases are treated with wide excision with reconstruction. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are advocated in the recurrent or extensive lesions with regional or distant metastasis. Other modalities such as immunomodulation have been tried. A case of a 55-year-old female patient with a bleeding scalp lesion is presented. Initially though

We report the case of a 64-year-old patient suffering from a multiple metastatic bronchial adenocarcinoma, referred to our department for a gingival tumefaction. The diagnostic assumptions considered were those of a pyogenic granuloma, of a primary gingival carcinoma, or of a metastasis of the bronchial tumor. An excisional biopsy was carried out and the histopathologic examination confirmed the latter diagnosis. No complementary care was performed because of the multiple localizations and unfavorable prognosis. If metastases of pulmonary cancers represent the majority of gingival metastases,

PURPOSE: Hydroxyapatite (HA) spheres used to replace volume after an enucleation are often wrapped with autologous tissue before orbital implantation. Man-made materials are less expensive and pose no risk for viral transmission. The use of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) to wrap HA spheres was evaluated.
METHODS: The medical records of 2 consecutive patients who underwent uncomplicated implantation of an HA sphere wrapped in ePTFE were reviewed.
RESULTS: An unusual reaction to the ePTFE material that was nonresponsive to topical or systemic antibiotic therapy developed in these 2 p

In three new cases of sweat gland carcinoma that we observed within recent years, the sites were the axilla, back, and arm. Axillary lymph node dissections were performed in two of the patients and the nodes were normal. Preoperative diagnoses were hydroadenitis, squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, and pyogenic granuloma. In one patient who was followed up for four years, there has been no recurrence; the follow-up period for the other two has been short. Sweat gland carcinoma is an uncommon neoplasm that occurs mostly in the older age groups. It may be very slow growing and is extremely diff

Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is a low-grade vascular tumor associated with Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus/human herpesvirus 8 (KSHV/HHV8) infection. Kaposi sarcoma lesions predominantly present at mucocutaneous sites, but may involve all organs and anatomic locations. Recognized epidemiologic-clinical forms of KS include classic, African (endemic), AIDS-associated (epidemic), and iatrogenic KS. New clinical manifestations have been described, such as antiretroviral therapy-related KS regression or flares. Kaposi sarcoma lesions evolve from early (patch stage) macules into plaques (plaque stage) that grow i

There is some disagreement about the validity of the clinical term "pregnancy tumor." On the basis of its clinical presentation and histologic appearance, some authors believe that it simply represents a pyogenic granuloma (PG), whereas others believe that the lesion is unique because of the apparent influence of female sex hormones. In an attempt to resolve this problem, a study was undertaken to determine whether a significant correlation exists between PG and pregnancy, and whether the clinical term applies to the other epulides. The study involved 42 epulides diagnosed clinically as pregna

Peripheral giant-cell granulomas (PGCGs) are reddish color lesions of the gingiva which are frequently diagnosed on a routine basis by many dentists in the regular dental practice. Most of the lesions of PGCG are slow-growing, nonaggressive with asymptomatic, and tend to recur. Here, we exhibit a case of PGCG of the upper jaw in a 15-year-old girl child. She presented with a chief complaint of a lump on her upper anterior tooth region for 2-3 months. A well-defined painless, sessile exophytic growth, measuring about 1 cm × 0.5 cm in dimension with pinkish red in color with a firm consistency,

Seventy cases of morphologically developed cases or brucellosis in hares are described. Twenty-five of the cases were tested by the cultivation methods and the causative agent was identified as Brucella suis. In females the authors found 57 cases, in males 13 cases. Brucellosis of hares was characterized by a chronical course, by a conspicuous local progression, and by a predominance of pathological changes in the reproductive organs of both sexes. Males showed changes mainly on testes. Nodal, solitary as well as multiple lesions in the parametrium near the uterine wall were particularly typic

Background. Reliable immunohistochemical assays to assess the definitive role of mast cells (MCs) and angiogenesis in the pathogenesis of oral reactive lesions are generally not available. The aim of the present study was to evaluate mast cell counts (MCC) and microvessel density (MVD) in oral reactive lesions and determine the correlation between MCC and MVD. Methods. Seventy-five cases of reactive lesions of the oral cavity, including pyogenic granuloma, fibroma, peripheral giant cell granuloma, inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia, peripheral ossifying fibroma (15 for each category) were immuno

Focal reactive overgrowths are among the most common oral mucosal lesions. The gingiva is a significant site affected by these lesions, when triggered by chronic inflammation in response to microorganisms in dental plaque. Myofibroblasts are differentiated fibroblasts that actively participate in diseases characterized by tissue fibrosis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the presence of stromal myofibroblasts in the main focal reactive overgrowths of the gingiva: focal fibrous hyperplasia (FFH), peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF), pyogenic granuloma (PG), and peripheral giant cell g

BACKGROUND: The gingiva reacts to chronic irritation or trauma with localized reactive hyperplastic lesions (LRHL) that can be classified into four groups: focal fibrous hyperplasia (FFH), pyogenic granuloma (PG), peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF), and peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG). This study determined the frequency of LRHL in an oral pathology biopsy service and compared these data with reports from other countries.
METHODS: The material included the biopsies of all consecutive LRHL of the gingiva stored in the departmental database (1989-2008). Lesions were analyzed according to

Factor XIIIa+ and CD34+ dendritic cells, believed to be subsets of monocyte/macrophages, have been identified in dermis and in dermal tumors. The purpose of this study was to determine the presence and distribution of analogous cell types in oral submucosa and oral fibro-vascular lesions. Antibodies to XIIIa, CD34, S-100 protein, and macrophage antigen (MAC 387) were tested on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections from normal mucosa, peripheral fibroma (PF), peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF), peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG), pyogenic granuloma (PG), lymphangioma (La), benig

Primary dermis-fat implantation can be effectively performed in cases without pre-existing systemic vascular disease or orbital burns. Meticulous handling of the graft (using a Goeller trephine and Tenon's capsule traction sutures), filleting Tenon's capsule, and avoiding cautery of the graft bed may minimize graft necrosis and atrophy. Pyogenic granulomas of the conjunctival-graft interface and graft hirsutism are easily managed. Keratinization of the socket, graft wound dehiscence, donor site hematomas, and wound dehiscence are avoided with careful surgical technique. Secondary dermis-fat or

AIM: The aim of the study was to quantify the presence of mast cells in various inflammatory lesions like periapical granuloma, periapical cyst, inflammatory gingival hyperplasia and pyogenic granuloma. Mast cell degranulation and association with lymphocytes were also recorded in an attempt to understand the role of mast cells in the pathogenesis of these inflammatory lesions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The quantification of mast cells was done on toluidine blue stained sections of all the four groups of lesions, using the image analyzer software, Image-Pro-Express (Media Cybernetics, USA).

BACKGROUND: Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a low-grade vascular neoplasm associated with human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8), frequently occurring in immunocompromised patients, particularly those with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)Its clinical presentation varies from innocuous-appearing vascular skin lesions to visceral involvement. There are case reports of a rare type of KS which mimics pyogenic granulomas particularly on the feet though reports of KS in immunocompetent, healthy individuals are rare. In this report we share the case of an immunocompetent, healthy young adult male who presented with

A 34-year-old male with no significant past medical history presented for evaluation of a 15-year, growing, 8-mm, red eroded nodule with collarette of scale on his left fifth toe that appeared after a distant history of trauma. On initial examination, the lesion was clinically suspected to be a pyogenic granuloma. At this visit, a shave biopsy was performed revealing a soft white subcutaneous mass that was easily removed from the surrounding dermis. Histology revealed a soft-tissue mass with biphasic proliferation of elongated spindle cells with tapered nuclei occurring in compact cellular foc
