BACKGROUND: Odontomas are the most common odontogenic tumors and are composed of dental tissues such as enamel, dentin and cementum. They are classified into compound and complex types. Compound odontomas usually appear as tooth-like structures in the anterior maxilla, whereas complex odontomas present as irregular masses of dental tissues, most frequently in the posterior mandible. Although odontomas are generally slow-growing and asymptomatic, large lesions can cause jaw expansion, facial asymmetry, and delayed tooth eruption. Various surgical approaches have been described, ranging from int

Odontogenic myxoma and odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) rarely coexist, especially in association with Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome (NBCCS). This report presents an unusual case of an NBCCS patient with simultaneous myxoma and OKC in the mandible. We introduce an innovative management strategy incorporating 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) as an adjunct treatment for OKC, paired with immediate mandibular reconstruction using a fibula-free flap, following the Jaw-In-A-Day (JIAD) protocol. The report details the clinical presentation, surgical approach, and follow-up, highlighting the potential benefit

Tumors of the central mandible requiring marginal mandibulectomy and floor of mouth resection require reconstruction for cosmetic and functional purposes. Numerous reconstructive techniques have been described for small-moderate sized defects of the central mandible/anterior floor of mouth. Robust local flaps have been well described; however second stage procedures are required for pedicle division. The split mentalis muscle flap is a simple, quick and low morbidity option for central mandibular defects and has been demonstrated effectively with the use of a split skin graft. We provide a mod

AIM: Investigating the prevalence of mandibular ORN in a single Swedish Oncology Center.
METHODS: A total of 450 patients, treated with radiotherapy for squamous cell carcinoma in the oropharynx between 2004 and 2014 were included. Three different techniques of radiotherapy were studied. ORN diagnosis was set when clinical signs according to Marx were observed, or if radiological signs were staged according to Schwartz and Kagan.
RESULTS: Using the staging system, 90 patients (20%) were diagnosed with ORN. The mean age of the ORN patients was 56.6 years, the older the patient the lower the r

INTRODUCTION: Ameloblastoma is a borderline bone tumor that origins from the residual epithelium of the teeth germs, the epithelium of the enamel organ or the epithelium of odontogenic cysts. Ameloblastoma management is challenging owing to the necessity of tumor radical excision and the functional and aesthetic reconstruction of the surgical defect. The fibula-free flap (FFF) provides a high-quality and predictable mandibular reconstruction due to the high-caliber vascular pedicle, the bone length that can reconstruct large defects, the possibility for implants-based prosthetic reconstruction

Ameloblastoma is the second most common odontogenic tumor arising in the maxillary bones. The WHO classified ameloblastoma in: solid/multicystic (SMA); unicystic; peripheral and desmoplastic. A conservative or radical approach may be performed for SMA treatment to achieve total excision of the lesion. In this case report, a 47-year-old woman, presented a deformation of the left mandibular region and paresthesia of the left hemi-labium, at the ortopanoramic x-ray (OPT) a multilocular osteolytic lesion and the rhizalysis of dental elements 3.7, 3.6, 3.5, 3.4 and the inclusion of 3.8 was appreciat

Lymphomas are a heterogeneous group of malignant tumours of the haematopoietic system characterized by an aberrant proliferation of mature lymphoid cells or their precursors and mainly represented by non-Hodgkin´s lymphomas (NHL). The aim of this paper was to report two cases of NHLs with mandibular locations by detailing their different clinical, radiological, and histopathological aspects, as well as the approach followed to diagnose these diseases and to provide patients with the appropriate therapeutic management. The first case is about a 72-year-old female patient who was diagnosed with

Odontome, tumor of odontogenic origin, is associated with disturbances in the eruption of teeth such as impaction, delayed eruption or retention of permanent teeth. It is seen on radiographic examination as a radiopaque lesion which may be single or multiple. Morphologically, odontomes are of two types-compound or complex and can be found at any age with high prevalence in maxilla than in mandible. In this case report, lack of eruption of permanent mandibular canine owing to presence of associated compound odontome is presented.

Multiple myeloma is characterized by a monoclonal neoplastic proliferation of plasma cells. Systematically, multiple myeloma would bring on hypercalcemia, anemia, renal failure, and bone lesions. The vertebrae, ribs, pelvic bone, and skull are usually involved in bone lesions. We report a 46-year-old man whose initial finding of multiple myeloma was a mandible mass. Mandible mass is not rare in multiple myeloma, but it is not that frequently seen as an initial finding.

INTRODUCTION: Ossifying fibroma mimicking chronic apical periodontitis is extremely rare. This report describes a case of ossifying fibroma located in the periapical region of the mandibular right canine that was misdiagnosed as chronic apical periodontitis.
METHODS: A 40-year-old woman complained of slight pain in the right anterior mandibular region without mucosal abnormalities or swelling. Radiographically, a well-circumscribed, unilocular, radiolucent lesion was observed that was located in the periapical region of the mandibular right canine, which presented an endodontically treated ro

Resection of primary tumors of the floor of the mouth mandates consideration of the management of the mandible which may be either involved by direct invasion or by close proximity. Segmental mandibulectomy can usually be performed when the tumor is either massive or directly invading the mandible. However, the cosmetic and functional results of segmental mandibulectomy are unsatisfactory. Whenever the tumor is close to the mandible or adherent to the periosteum, consideration should be given to marginal mandibulectomy. Over a period of 8 years, we have treated 65 patients with carcinoma of th

We present 17 cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the mandible, collected over a span of 10 years. Clinically, the patients showed a male:female ratio of 1:2.4 and a mean age of 60.6 years. Swelling was the most common symptom. In 11 of 17 patients, the disease presented in stage I. Radiotherapy alone was employed in 11 patients, in conjunction with chemotherapy in 5 patients, and was preceded by surgery in the remaining case. At this writing ten of the subjects are still alive, five died following progression of the disease, and two were lost during follow-up while in complete remission. Histo

Surgeons who operate successfully upon patients with non-neoplastic or neoplastic disease of the parotid gland must have special graduate training in this type of surgery. The anatomical nature of the gland, the facial nerve, and surrounding anatomical structures combined with disease all tend to enhance surgical difficulties inherently present. The well trained surgeon is usually successful in avoiding many surgical difficulties. Wound exposure and identification of the facial nerve are discussed at length. Patients undergoing multiple operations fall into a special category since the surgeon
