Eating disorders: clinical update.

Variation exists in our attitude and behaviour towards food and exercise, resulting in different degrees of health and ill health. Cultural and economic factors contribute to this, alongside personal choices, leading to a spectrum from normative eating, through disordered eating to the extremes of eating disorders (EDs). Understanding the intricate interplay between biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors to eating, exercise and body image is paramount to understand the current state regarding EDs and to deliver/develop multifaceted and individualised treatments. Significant servi

Possession Syndrome in Rural Nepal: A Case Study Examining Cultural, Clinical and Forensic Implications.

Possession state is a disorder of consciousness with substitution of the personality, which is claimed to be a spirit, a deity, a dead person or some other power. In rural Nepal these experiences are normalised and Hindu communities often attribute psychological conditions to a supernatural cause. We report the case of a 30-year-old woman who presented with acute-onset symptoms characterised by episodes of altered consciousness, vocalisations suggestive of religious chants, and deity-associated behaviour, probably influenced by local suggestions of divine possession. Additional notable feature

Memory and Counterfactual Simulations for Past Wrongdoings Foster Moral Learning and Improvement.

In four studies, we investigated the role of remembering, reflecting on, and mutating personal past moral transgressions to learn from those moral mistakes and to form intentions for moral improvement. Participants reported having ruminated on their past wrongdoings, particularly their more severe transgressions, and they reported having frequently thought about morally better ways in which they could have acted instead (i.e., morally upward counterfactuals; Studies 1-3). The more that participants reported having mentally simulated morally better ways in which they could have acted, the stron

Developing a Risk Model to Target High-risk Preventive Interventions for Sexual Assault Victimization among Female U.S. Army Soldiers.

Sexual violence victimization is a significant problem among female U.S. military personnel. Preventive interventions for high-risk individuals might reduce prevalence, but would require accurate targeting. We attempted to develop a targeting model for female Regular U.S. Army soldiers based on theoretically-guided predictors abstracted from administrative data records. As administrative reports of sexual assault victimization are known to be incomplete, parallel machine learning models were developed to predict administratively-recorded (in the population) and self-reported (in a representati

[The influence of the social perception of emotions in the formal language of children with Asperger's syndrome or high-functioning autism].

INTRODUCTION: People with Asperger's syndrome or high-functioning autism both have difficulties in the social area that become manifest in alterations affecting the development of mental skills, difficulties in self-perception and control over the emotions, and scant success when it comes to developing social interactions that last for any length of time. DEVELOPMENT: A linguistic analysis of the answers children give when asked to talk about personal events in which they made someone angry or somebody made them angry reveals the intention to generate empathy and sympathy in children who have

Reported parental behaviour and adult affective symptoms. 2. Mediating factors.

Potential mediators of the modest association between retrospectively rated parental behaviour and adult affective symptoms in offspring were investigated in a national longitudinal study of a cohort followed to the age of 43. Personality measures from adolescence could account for a small part of this association. Personal relationships in adulthood were more strongly associated with both parental behaviour and symptoms: marital history, emotional support, social network and availability of help in a crisis. Poor parenting did not lead to a general vulnerability to later life events, and soci

An Intervention Supporting the Mental Health of Children with a Refugee Background.

This contribution proposes an intervention methodology that provides improved access to and effectiveness of mental health care facilities in Brussels, Belgium, for children and their families with a refugee and migration background. Migration is a complex process that involves several potential risk factors, and referral to mental health facilities is often ineffective. Consequently, optimal developmental opportunities for refugee children are hampered. The intervention is underpinned by a broad-based contextual perspective that seeks to bring to the surface and tackles the many challenges fa

School-based physical activity and adolescent mental health: candidate psychological mechanisms, contextual moderators, and unresolved controversies.

Adolescence is a peak period for the onset of mental disorders, yet the majority of young people fail to meet recommended physical activity levels. This convergence of rising psychological distress and declining physical activity has positioned schools, settings that reach nearly all adolescents, as a central platform for population-level mental health promotion through movement. This mini review synthesizes recent evidence on the effects of school-based physical activity interventions on adolescent mental health, focusing on the psychological mechanisms that carry these effects, the contextua

Assessing Refugee Trauma: Transformative Clinical Training in a Community Service-Learning Model.

Marriage and family therapy emphasizes systemic responsiveness, yet integrating advocacy into clinical training remains limited. This pilot study examines a trauma-informed service-learning partnership with a community-based organization, where graduate students conducted supervised forensic evaluations for asylum seekers. Using a phenomenological case study design with mixed-methods follow-up, we explored how direct engagement with survivors of politically motivated persecution shaped students' professional development, cultural humility, and advocacy skills. Upon the 1-year follow-up partici

Semantic Accessibility Is Associated with Reduced Experience-Induced Heuristic Fixation in Creative Problem Solving.

Creative problem solving often fails because people rely on heuristic responses reinforced by prior experience. According to the default-interventionist account, analytic intervention can override these heuristic defaults only when the semantic system provides access to competing representations. We tested this prediction using a modified Chinese Remote Associates Task in which two factors were independently manipulated: semantic accessibility (high vs. low) and situational induction (strong vs. weak). A significant interaction emerged: strong induction impaired performance only under low sema

A Review of Implementation Strategies to Enhance PrEP Delivery for People Experiencing Housing Insecurity: Advancing a Multifaceted High-Touch, Low-Barrier Approach.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes key implementation strategies to advance oral and long-acting PrEP delivery for unstably housed people in the United States. RECENT FINDINGS: People experiencing homelessness and housing instability face barriers to PrEP uptake and adherence including lack of safe medication storage, competing basic needs, insurances issues, and/or mental health or substance use disorders. Recent advancements in HIV treatment and prevention provide evidence on high-touch, low-barrier implementation approaches to address these challenges. We compiled these approaches i

Cryptococcal Meningitis Masquerading as Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus in an Immune-competent Adult.

We report a case of acute cryptococcal meningitis (CM) masquerading as normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) in an immune-competent female. An 85-year-old human immunodeficiency virus-negative female presented to the emergency room for altered mental status and difficulty walking. She was increasingly lethargic, with urinary incontinence and gait instability. A previous computed tomography was reported to have ventricular dilatation out of proportion to the degree of cortical atrophy. Magnetic resonance scan of the brain revealed ventricular dilatation and subtle debris layering the occipital ho

Converging Paradigms: A Reflection on Parallel Theoretical Developments in Psychoanalytic Metapsychology and Empirical Dream Research.

In the last decades one can perceive a striking parallelism between the shifting perspective of leading representatives of empirical dream research concerning their conceptualization of dreaming and the paradigm shift within clinically based psychoanalytic metapsychology with respect to its theory on the significance of dreaming. In metapsychology, dreaming becomes more and more a central metaphor of mental functioning in general. The theories of Klein, Bion, and Matte-Blanco can be considered as milestones of this paradigm shift. In empirical dream research, the competing theories of Hobson a
