The association of host genes with specific sexually transmitted infections.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are hazardous to human health worldwide. STIs have a direct influence on sexual and reproductive health and can increase the chances of HIV. Globally, more than 1 million STIs are acquired every day and the majority are asymptomatic. Approximately, 374 million cases of STIs have been reported annually. The most prevalent STIs include chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, and trichomoniasis. These STIs are caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Treponema pallidum and Trichomonas vaginalis. The major factor that contributes to the susceptibility…

Neurosyphilis Presenting as Syndrome of Limbic Encephalitis Mimicking Herpes Simplex Virus Neuro-Infection Diagnosed Using CXCL13 Point-of-Care Assay-Case Report.

The syndrome of limbic encephalitis is a severe clinical condition with heterogenous aetiopathogenesis. A common pathogen causing the infectious syndrome of limbic encephalitis is herpes simplex virus (HSV), but rare cases caused by Treponema pallidum have also been reported. We present the case of a 46-year-old man who presented with sudden onset of headaches, nausea, vomiting, and short-term loss of consciousness with clonic convulsions and subsequent disorientation and aphasia. Examination of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) revealed lymphocytic pleocytosis and magnetic resonance of the brain …

Comparison of RPR and ELISA with TPHA for the Diagnosis of Syphilis: Implication for Updating Syphilis Point-of-Care Tests in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum, and it persists to be a major public health problem in Africa, including Ethiopia. Syphilis diagnosis is made by either nontreponemal or treponemal approaches, though in developing countries the diagnosis relies mostly on nonspecific tests due to several reasons. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess the sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, and agreement of rapid plasma reagin (RPR) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with Treponema pallidum hemagglutination ass…

Congenital Syphilis: A Case Report Presenting a Rare Clinical Manifestation in Two-Month-Old Newborn in Bahrain.

Congenital syphilis, caused by the Gram-negative obligate bacterium Treponema pallidum, can manifest as early- or late-onset infection, typically exhibiting classic symptoms such as a maculopapular rash, failure to thrive, and hepatosplenomegaly. This case report presents rare clinical manifestations of congenital syphilis not typically observed during early onset infection in a newborn in Bahrain. Additionally, it details the physical findings and investigations conducted to diagnose the disease.

Syphilitic chorioretinitis presenting as a choroidal granuloma.

A rare case of syphilitic uveitis presenting as a choroidal granuloma is described in this case report. The clinical picture resembled that of a tubercular choroidal granuloma. However, the patient was positive for treponemal (treponema pallidum hemagglutination assay) as well as non-treponemal tests (venereal disease research laboratory test) for syphilis. Therefore, the patient was treated for ocular syphilis and responded to antisyphilitic therapy. There was a complete resolution of the lesion at the end of 14 days of treatment.

[Syphilis: what's new?].

Syphilis : what's new ? Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by Treponema pallidum. It is strongly resurgent since the end of the 1990s especially in the MSM community. The diagnosis is serological, sometimes confirmed by the direct examination of a mucocutaneous lesion. Neurological and ophthalmological localizations may be early and involve functional prognosis. Treatment normally relies on intramuscular benzathine penicillin or oral doxycycline. The effectiveness of the treatment is judged on the decrease of the quantitative VDRL.

Secondary syphilis: The great imitator can't be forgotten.

Syphilis is an infection caused by Treponema pallidum, mainly transmitted by sexual contact. Since 2001, primary and secondary syphilis rates started to rise, with an epidemic resurgence. The authors describe an exuberant case of secondary syphilis, presenting with annular and lichen planus-like lesions, as well as one mucocutaneous lesion. Physicians must be aware of syphilis in daily practice, since the vast spectrum of its cutaneous manifestations is rising worldwide.

Syphilis in Arkansas adolescents: a high-risk infection for a high-risk group.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the spirochetal bacterium Treponema pallidum. Transmission of the organism occurs with oral, vaginal, or anal sex due to direct contact with an open syphilitic sore. For many years thought to be in decline, syphilis numbers began to increase in 2001, especially in the subpopulation of men having sex with men (MSM). This case report highlights the vulnerability not only of this at-risk group, but minority adolescents as well.

[High-dose intravenous penicillin therapy in neurosyphilis. III. Evaluation of antitreponemal antibodies of the IgM class in cerebrospinal fluid and serum].

IgM antibodies against Treponema pallidum were investigated in the serum and in the CSF of 9 patients with symptomatic neurosyphilis, before the treatment and in several occasions after the treatment. Tests used were the FTA-Abs test, the IgM-solid phase hemadsorption test and an IgM-Elisa test. Titers of reactions decreased after treatment but they were still reactive in the blood and in the CSF during the second year after the treatment.

Clinical characteristics of lung abscess by red complex bacteria infection: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Treponema denticola, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Tannerella forsythia are common oral pathogens collectively referred to as the "red complex bacteria", serve as crucial periodontopathic agents. Owing to the challenges associated with anaerobic culture, their contribution to lower respiratory tract infections, especially lung abscess, is often undervalued. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) has evolved as a potent instrument for the identification of fastidious organisms. CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old male with chronic cough and hemoptysis was admitted to our hospita…

Prevalence of Transfusion-Transmitted Infections (HCV, HIV, Syphilis and Malaria) in Blood Donors: A Large-Scale Cross-Sectional Study.

Blood plays a major role in transmitting infectious diseases such as hepatitis C virus (HCV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), syphilis, malaria, and many others. Thus, this study sought to evaluate the distribution of HCV, HIV, syphilis, and malaria among blood donors in Yemen. This is a cross-sectional study, conducted on blood donors at the national center in Yemen. Blood donors' specimens were serologically tested for the presence of anti-HCV and anti-HIV antibodies, as well as anti-Treponema pallidum, anti-Plasmodium falciparum, and anti-Plasmodium vivax. A tot…

Neurosyphilis prevalence at a Portuguese stroke unit care.

INTRODUCTION: Syphilis is a systemic human disease which is caused by infection with the spirochete Treponema pallidum. It is spread worldwide, and there has recently been an increase in its incidence. Neurosyphilis (NS) can have a variety of presentations; meningovascular NS is a specific affection of the Treponema which occurs in an early stage after the primary infection, causing an inflammatory arteriopathy which may result in an ischemic stroke. As a rare manifestation of syphilis, there are few prevalence and epidemiological studies, and data are almost non-existent. The objective of thi…

Can oral infection be a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease?

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a scourge of longevity that will drain enormous resources from public health budgets in the future. Currently, t … Numerous microorganisms are suspected in AD brains ranging from bacteria (mainly oral and non-oral Treponema species), viruses (herpes simplex type I), and yeasts (Candida species). A causal relationship between periodontal pathogens and non-oral Treponema species of bacteria has been proposed via the amyloid-beta and inflammatory links. Periodontitis cons …
