Time-resolved contrast enhanced magnetic resonance angiography of the head and neck at 3.0 tesla: initial results.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to implement and evaluate a high-performance, extended field of view protocol for time-resolved contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (CEMRA) of the carotid circulation by using a dedicated neurovascular (NV) array coil. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 16 adult volunteers and 20 clinical patients with suspected cerebrovascular disease (15 male, 21 female, 25-82 years of age) were scanned with a fast 3D MRA sequence (TR/TE: 2.16/1 milliseconds, sampling BW: 1090 Hz/pixel), with echo-sharing and parallel acquisition. All studies were performed on a 3.0 T MR system

T2-weighted MRI of the uterus: fast spin echo vs. breath-hold fast spin echo.

This study compared one routine T2-weighted fast spin echo (T2FSE) sequence with a breath-hold T2FSE (BH T2FSE) sequence of the female pelvis for image quality, uterine anatomy, lesion detection, and signal intensity measurements. Thirty-two consecutive women (mean age 41.7 years) were imaged at 1.5 T with one high-resolution routine T2FSE sequence and one BH T2FSE sequence in the sagittal plane as part of comprehensive pelvic magnetic resonance imaging. The different image sets were rated separately for imaging characteristics (overall image quality, uterine anatomy definition, lesion detecti

Ultrahypofractionated radiotherapy for localised prostate cancer: The impact of daily MRI-guided adaptive radiotherapy on delivered dose.

INTRODUCTION: Magnetic resonance image-guided adaptive radiotherapy (MRIgART) reduces uncertainties by correcting for day-to-day target and organ-at-risk deformation and motion. This is the first study to examine the dosimetric impact of MRIgART for ultrahypofractionated prostate cancer treatment, compared to standard-of-care image-guided non-adapted radiotherapy. METHODS: Twenty patients with localised prostate cancer, who received ultrahypofractionated MRIgART on the Unity MR linac (Elekta, Sweden) were retrospectively analysed. Online daily MRI was acquired for replanning (MRIsession) and

The validity of arterial measurements in a South African embalmed body population.

INTRODUCTION: Knowledge of the normal arterial diameter at a given anatomical point is the first step toward quantifying the severity of cardiovascular diseases. According to several studies, parameters such as weight, height, age and sex can explain morphometric variations in arterial anatomy that are observed in a population. Before the development of a reference database against which to compare the diameters of arteries in a variety of pathological conditions, the compatibility between embalmed body measurements and computed tomography (CT) measurements must first be established. PURPOSE:

Radial Artery Catheterization: Which is Right…I Mean Correct?

The radial artery has gained favor as the access of choice for many operators due to a lower risk of vascular complications. The vascular anatomy of the left upper extremity may be more conducive to cardiac catheterization given reduced subclavian tortuosity. The left radial artery continues to be an arrow in the quiver of modern interventional cardiologist and may provide less radiation exposure when compared to the right radial artery.

Normal anatomical variants of the menisci and cruciate ligaments that may mimic disease.

There are many normal anatomical variants of the knee joint. Some are common and others are rare. With continuing improvements in the spatial resolution of MRI, smaller variants are more clearly demonstrated and can be mistaken for disease. They can all be differentiated from pathological conditions by understanding their anatomy and key differentiating features. This review compares normal variants of the menisci and cruciate ligaments with the pathological disorders that can mimic them.

["Real time"-3D-echocardiography: a valuable new tool in preoperative assessment of complex cardiac defects].

Evaluating complex cardiac defects in small children preoperatively requires multiple diagnostic procedures including echocardiography, but also the invasive methods such as cardiac catheterisation, computer-tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. We tried to assess the complex anatomy of the atrioventricular valves in atrioventricular septal defect using bedside real-time three-dimensional echocardiography and comparing these results to the anatomic findings at the time of operation.

Mandibulo-facial dysostosis: comparison study of a neonate with mandibulo-facial dysostosis and a normal neonate.

Mandibulo-facial dysostosis (MFD) is a malformative syndrome with autosomal dominant transmission and variable expressivity that mainly affects derivatives of the first and second branchial arches. The subsurface anatomy of this condition is still partly unexplored since there have been only four reported dissections of MFD. A detailed dissection of the head and neck of a neonate with MFD is described and compared with a normal neonate. Theories of the pathogenesis are discussed on the basis of these observations.

Changes in retroperitoneal anatomy of the lumbar spine in supine, prone, and lateral lumbar spine MRIs.

PURPOSE: To investigate the changes in anatomy of the retroperitoneal (RP) space and lumbar lordosis based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) acquired in different positions. METHODS: Twelve adults underwent MRI in the right-lateral decubitus, prone, and supine positions. At each lumbar disc space, the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the psoas, RP space CSA, distance to the great vessels, and lumbar lordosis were measured. RESULTS: At L2-3, the CSA of the RP space was increased in the lateral position compared to the prone position (11.4cm2 vs 7.5cm2, P=0.0071), and at L3-4 the RP space was s

Impact of Anatomical Position Errors on Dose Distribution in Head and Neck Radiotherapy and Robust Image Registration Against Anatomical Changes.

BACKGROUND/AIM: This study pursued two goals: Firstly, to search for anatomical structures strongly correlating with dose deterioration, and secondly to investigate the effectiveness of image registration focusing on critical anatomy by comparing it with a conventional method. The aim was to achieve robust image registration to correct for anatomical changes during treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty patients with head and neck cancer were enrolled, and 68 simulation computed tomography (CT) and rescan CT image sets were retrospectively analyzed. Experience level as a predictor of entry into the hypotympanum during feline total ear canal ablation and lateral bulla osteotomy.

OBJECTIVES: The study hypotheses were as follows: (1) owing to the unique anatomy of the feline middle ear, the hypotympanum would be entered in less than 100% of cats during total ear canal ablation and lateral bulla osteotomies (TECA-LBOs); and (2) incomplete penetration of the septum and subsequent failure to enter the hypotympanum is more likely to occur in surgeries performed by a novice surgeon when compared with an experienced surgeon and may be under-recognized. METHODS: Head CT was performed in 12 feline cadavers to confirm absence of gross ear disease. A novice surgeon and an experi

Perforating arteries of the thigh: An anatomical and radiological study.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to advance the understanding of the anatomy of the perforating branches of the profunda femoris artery to facilitate the avoidance of iatrogenic injury in surgery around the thigh and ensure safe percutaneous embolisation. METHODS: Dissection was carried out on seven cadavers, examining the relationship of the point of origin of the perforating branches of profunda femoris, relative to lines connecting palpable bony landmarks (lines A and B). These were compared with 16 computed tomography angiograms (CTA). Left to right variation within subjects and variation between t

Modification of Distal Tibiofibular Relationship After a Mild Syndesmotic Injury.

BACKGROUND: The hypothesis of this study is that a sprain or tear of 1 or more of the 3 syndesmotic ligaments will result in a significant change in the osseous anatomy relationship when comparing injured to uninjured syndesmosis. Our secondary objective was to determine whether injuries to the syndesmosis as diagnosed on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could be found using static imaging. METHODS: This is a descriptive radiological study of ankle MRI reports over a 12-year period, from 2 different institutions, and divided in two groups: normal and injured syndesmotic ligaments. A series of

Anatomy and aging of the amygdala and hippocampus in autism spectrum disorder: an in vivo magnetic resonance imaging study of Asperger syndrome.

It has been proposed that people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have abnormal morphometry and development of the amygdala and hippocampus (AH). However, previous reports are inconsistent, perhaps because they included people of different ASD diagnoses, ages, and health. We compared, using magnetic resonance imaging, the in vivo anatomy of the AH in 32 healthy individuals with Asperger syndrome (12-47 years) and 32 healthy controls who did not differ significantly in age or IQ. We measured bulk (gray + white matter) volume of the AH using manual tracing (MEASURE). We first compared the vol

Averaged anatomy CT in weekly treatment quality control and offline adaptive intensity modulated proton therapy of head and neck cancers.

Adaptive intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) for head and neck cancer commonly relies on weekly repeated CT scans (rCTs) to assess anatomical changes and determine whether plan adaptation is required. However, a single rCT often fails to represent the daily anatomical variability observed on daily CBCTs, particularly in soft tissue regions subject to physiologic motion such as the tongue base, and supraglottic airway. This work evaluates an averaged‒anatomy CT (Ave_rCT) generated from deformably registered rCT and multiple preceding daily synthetic CTs (sCTs), following an approach previ

Comparison of Ultrasound-assisted versus Landmark-guided Subarachnoid Block in Patients of Ankylosing Spondylitis Undergoing Total Hip Replacement: A Prospective Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) poses considerable challenges for anesthesiologists due to its effect on spinal anatomy and potential airway difficulties. The characteristic ossification and vertebral fusion - commonly referred to as a "bamboo spine" - leads to rigidity and impaired spinal mobility, often complicating neuraxial anesthetic techniques. This study aimed to assess whether a preprocedural ultrasound-assisted approach improves the success rate of dural puncture with fewer needle attempts compared to the traditional landmark-guided technique in patients with altered
