A total of 95 women aged 47 to 72 were examined with a history of bloody discharge in the postmenopause. Sex hormones, hydrocortisone, thyroid hormones, blood lipids and serotonin, noradrenaline and adrenalin excretion were assessed. Histologic examinations of endometrial scrapings off were carried out in all the cases. A table for prediction of endometrial diseases has been created on the basis of the findings. Cancer development risk factors were singled out.

A patient with autoimmune Addison's disease treated with hydrocortisone and fludrocortisone became mineralocorticoid-deficient whilst taking lithium carbonate for a bipolar illness. During an in-patient metabolic balance study she required 1.0 mg fludrocortisone daily and dietary sodium supplementation to make plasma renin activity and serum potassium normal, and to abolish postural hypotension. We present data to suggest that lithium carbonate inhibits the action of fludrocortisone on the distal renal tubule.

A retrospective study of 38 women with preterm prematurely ruptured membranes was performed. Twenty were treated with intravenous hydrocortisone followed by timed delivery between 48 and 72 hours after initiation of steroid therapy. Eighteen were managed expectantly, with observation for labor and infection. There were no significant differences between steroid-treated patients and observed patients in the incidence of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, perinatal mortality, or maternal or neonatal infections.

We present the case of a patient with suspected congenital hypopituitarism first diagnosed at the age of 38 years. Despite partial insufficiency of all pituitary-regulated hormonal axes, the patient never suffered from severe health problems. However, the patient was disfigured, and his intellectual and physical capacities were clearly impaired. The initiation of a hormone replacement therapy with hydrocortisone and thyroid hormones is essential in such a patient, but the substitution of sex hormones can create ethical problems.

A 78-year-old woman was admitted with diarrhea, abnormal fatigue, and depression. Routine diagnostic tests were to a large extent without pathological findings. Suppressed TSH was initially considered as subclinical hyperthyreosis because of substitution with L-thyroxin. The endocrinological diagnostics showed hypopituitarism because of an empty sella. After substitution with hydrocortisone and adapted L-thyroxin the patient recovered promptly. Diarrhea, abnormal fatigue, and depression might be hints for hypopituitarism with hypocortisolism.
