Guided implant surgery and sinus lift in severely resorbed maxillae: A retrospective clinical study with up to 10 years of follow-up.

OBJECTIVES: In the posterior maxilla, due to the presence of maxillary sinus, residual bone height lower than 3mm is a critical factor that can affect implant stability and survival. The use of guided surgery may facilitate the surgical procedures and the implant insertion in case of severely resorbed maxillae. Moreover, it may have beneficial effects on the long-term survival and success of implant-supported restorations. This study aimed to evaluate implant supported restorations on severely resorbed maxilla (<3 mm) after sinus lift with collagenated xenograft and guided surgery. METHODS: F

Retrospective analysis of time-related three-dimensional iliac bone graft resorption following sinus lift and vertical augmentation in the maxilla.

The atrophic maxilla frequently requires bone grafting using an onlay graft (OG) or sinus lifting (SL) before implant rehabilitation. The resorption of bone grafts is influenced by the time until implantation, quality of donor bone, and grafting technique. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of both grafting techniques on the time-related resorption of autologous iliac bone graft. Forty-three patients underwent either onlay grafting or a sinus lift at 73 sites in the maxilla. Graft height was measured by cone beam computed tomography after augmentation and during follow-up for …

Application of a Cone-Beam Computed Tomography-Based Index for Evaluating Surgical Sites Prior to Sinus Lift Procedures-A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVES: Radiography-based indices can help surgeons perform detailed examinations of the surgical site and predict the surgical difficulty of cases. We aimed to develop and validate a novel CBCT-based index that can predict the surgical difficulty of sinus-augmentation procedures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the first stage, five experienced dental specialists performed a review of the literature and closed group discussions and designed the novel index. In the next stage, the index was validated. CBCT scans of 30 patients scheduled for sinus-augmentation procedures were evaluated and assig

The efficacy of a lifting strap as an ergonomic intervention for EMS providers: Does it make it easier to raise a supine patient to an upright sitting posture?

Patient handling related musculoskeletal injuries are prevalent among Emergency Medical Service (EMS) providers. The first step in many patient handling situations is where a supine patient on the floor is brought to a sitting position. This study investigated whether a strap, placed under the patient's torso and long enough that EMS providers can perform the patient raising task in a standing posture, reduced muscular effort. Fifteen participants raised a simulated patient, with the help of an assistant, using the strap method and a traditional method (grasping the shoulders) in an open area,

Vertical Bone Gain after Sinus Lift Procedures with Beta-Tricalcium Phosphate and Simultaneous Implant Placement-A Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the vertical bone gain achieved after the sinus lift procedure with beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) used as a bone substitute and simultaneous implant placement. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-eight sinus lift procedures (utilizing a synthetic ceramic containing 99.9% tricalcium phosphate as a bone substitute) and simultaneous implant placements were performed on 119 patients. The lateral window approach surgical protocol for maxillary sinus lift was performed on the patients. The implants were evaluated using cone-bea

Evidence-Based Clinical Efficacy of Leukocyte and Platelet-Rich Fibrin in Maxillary Sinus Floor Lift, Graft and Surgical Augmentation Procedures.

Bone augmentation techniques have increasingly been indicated for re-creating adequate bone height and volume suitable for dental implant sites. This is particularly applicable in the severely atrophic posterior maxilla where sinus perforation (ruptured Schneiderian membrane) is a very common complication and sinus floor elevation or lift is frequently considered a standard procedure. The augmentation of the maxillary sinus can be performed with or without grafting biomaterials. Herein, numerous biomaterials and bone substitutes have been proposed, primarily to sustain the lifted space. In add

Hidradenitis suppurativa of the groin treated by radical excision and defect closure by medial thigh lift: aesthetic surgery meets reconstructive surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Hidradenitis suppurativa of the groin is a chronic, relapsing inflammatory disease of the skin and subcutaneous tissues. Radical surgical excision is the treatment of choice. Often split-skin grafting or wound healing by secondary intention are used for defect closure, sometimes with disfiguring results. We describe our experience with radical excision of localised inguinal hidradenitis suppurativa and immediate defect closure with a medial thigh lift. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Our hospital database was searched for all patients presenting to our institution for surgical treatment o

Clinical evaluation of demineralized bone allograft in a hyaluronic acid carrier for sinus lift augmentation in humans: a computed tomography and histomorphometric study.

OBJECTIVES: Natural and synthetic graft materials are used routinely in sinus floor augmentations to help support implants in atrophic maxillary ridges. This clinical study was based on the hypothesis that the clinical effectiveness of demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft/demineralized bone matrix (DFDBA/DBM) in sinus lifts varies when used in combination bone graft substitute materials. To test this hypothesis, DFDBA was used together with one of three materials: in saline plus anorganic bone (DFDBA: Bio-Oss; in hyaluronic acid (DFDBA: HY, 32 : 68, w/w; DBX alone; DBX plus Bio-Oss; and D

Pneumococcal carriage and serotype distribution in Portuguese children six months after the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions: rise in serotype 3 amid stable non-vaccine serotypes.

Streptococcus pneumoniae remains a major cause of infectious disease globally, with young children serving as key reservoirs for transmission. This study evaluated pneumococcal carriage and serotype distribution among young children in Portugal, six months after the lifting of COVID-19 public health measures and seven years after the introduction of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) into the National Immunization Plan. A cross-sectional study was conducted in late 2022 among children aged 18 months to 6 years attending day-care centers in an urban region. Saliva samples, vac…

Effects of age and sex on outcomes of the Q-Motor speeded finger tapping and grasping and lifting tests-findings from the population-based BiDirect Study.

BACKGROUND: Q-Motor is a suite of motor tests originally designed to assess motor symptoms in Huntington's disease. Among others, Q-Motor encompasses a finger tapping task and a grasping and lifting task. To date, there are no systematic investigations regarding effects of variables which may affect the performance in specific Q-Motor tests per se, and normative Q-Motor data based on a large population-based sample are not yet available. OBJECTIVE: We investigated effects of age and sex on five selected Q-Motor outcomes representing the two core Q-Motor tasks speeded finger tapping and graspi…

Novel Minimally Invasive Mastoid Sling for a Nonsurgical Neck Lift: A Combination of Liposuction, Thermal Energy, and Suture Suspension for Neck Rejuvenation.

BACKGROUND: Neck aging manifests as blunting of the cervicomental angle (CMA), loss of jawline definition, vertical platysmal banding, submental fat accumulation, and redundant skin. While open neck rejuvenation techniques produce dramatic and durable results, they require extensive dissection, which can have prolonged recovery times. Today, many patients are seeking less invasive options with faster recovery times and optimal results. Previous attempts in our field to conduct a minimally invasive neck lift may lack sufficient deep anchoring to provide long-term support, particularly in the su
