Differences in the radiological characteristics between post-traumatic and non-traumatic knee osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee can be defined as primary (non-traumatic) or secondary (post-traumatic). Both non-traumatic OA and post-trau … t-bearing knee radiography of the tibiofemoral joint was performed. Joint space narrowing (JSN) and osteophytes were graded according to the radiographic atlas of the Osteoarthritis Research Society International. JSN and osteophytes were located predominantly in the medial compartment in the non-traumatic cohort. In the post-traumatic cohort, structural cha …

The median atlanto-occipital joint in advanced age.

STUDY DESIGN: Exploration of the craniocervical junction in cadavers of elderly individuals. OBJECTIVE: Histologic evaluation of osseous co … dian saw-cut and histologic sections. RESULTS: Of the specimens, 42% showed osteoarthritis-related osteophytes (primarily directed cranially) of the articular surfaces of the median atlantoaxial joint. In 5 cases, a large osteophyte of the anterior arch of the atlas touched the basiocciput. In 3 cases, a third occipital condyle touched the anterior arch of …

Knee osteoarthritis: interpretation variability of radiological signs.

The aim of this study was (1) to determine the variability in detecting radiological signs of knee osteoarthritis (OA) between an orthopaedics specialist, a fourth-year resident in the speciality and a recently qualified doctor and (2) to determine which of the existing criteria show the greatest variability when used by the three participants to detect the degree of evolution of the pathology. This observational study included radiographs of 95 patients with knee pain. Osteophytes, narrowing of joint space (excluding inter-osteophyte bridges) subchondral sclerosis, subchondral cysts, collapse…

The relationship of the kicking action in soccer and anterior ankle impingement syndrome. A biomechanical analysis.

Two different hypotheses have been advanced to explain the formation of talotibial osteophytes in the anterior ankle impingement syndrome. We investigated how frequently hyperplantar flexion occurs during kicking and whether the site of impact of the ball coincides with the reported location of the osteophytes. We also measured the magnitude of the impact force. We studied 150 kicking actions performed by 15 elite soccer players by using mobile sensors and high-speed video. In 39% of the kicking actions, the plantar flexion angle exceeded the maximum static plantar flexion angle. Ball impact w…

[Recent research advances of angiogenesis in temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis].

Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA) is a degenerative disease of temporomandibular joint, which has a high incidence and affects the quality of patients' life. While the pathogenesis of TMJOA remains unclear. It has been found that angiogenesis is involved in the development of TMJOA and it is closely related to the degradation of articular cartilage matrix, subchondral ossification, osteophyte formation and pain. This article reviews the recent advances in the study of angiogenesis in TMJOA, and provides a prospect for the treatment of TMJOA.

Forestier's syndrome : a rare cause of dysphagia. A case report and review of the literature.

We report a 72-year-old male with Forestier's syndrome suffering of dysphagia due to an anterior cervical calcification, unusually great in both volume and extent. Its resection by anterior approach allowed the immediate restoration of a normal swallowing. A bony resection is sufficient in case of Forestier's syndrome, but it must be associated with fixation in case of degenerative osteophyte with disc instability. Long-term follow-up is necessary because the recurrence of the calcification is slow but frequent.

An unusual complication of the Mackenzie approach for a Copeland hemiarthroplasty.

We report the case of a patient with end-stage osteoarthritis who received a successful Copeland resurfacing hemiarthroplasty through a Mackenzie anterosuperior approach, which involves taking the anterior portion of the deltoid attachment from the acromion along with an osteo-periosteal sleeve. The patient went on to develop severe subacromial impingement symptoms 4 months postoperatively. X-rays revealed a large anteroinferior acromial osteophyte that had not been present preoperatively and was deemed to represent a malunited osteo-periosteal sleeve from the Mackenzie approach.

Manubriosternal joint: imaging features of normal anatomy and arthritis.

Normal findings of the manubriosternal joint vary and include narrowing, irregularity, and ankylosis. Proliferative changes are common during the degenerative process, and they include osteophyte formation and sclerosis. Ankylosis may be an end result. Imaging features of inflammatory arthritides are also generally nonspecific. Bone marrow and adjacent soft tissue change on magnetic resonance imaging with no radiographic findings is a relatively early change. Only erosion and fluffy adjacent bone resorption on plain radiography and computed tomography are specific features of active arthritis.

Imaging of disk disease and degenerative spondylosis of the lumbar spine.

Low back pain is a common but poorly understood entity. Features of degeneration depend on which component of the motion segment is predominantly affected, and include disk space narrowing, vacuum phenomenon, disk desiccation, vertebral osteophyte formation, disk herniation, and facet arthrosis, but these features do not necessarily have any relationship to symptoms. Since most episodes of back pain resolve on their own, and most disk herniations spontaneously regress, imaging of low back pain, although widely performed, is probably not necessary in most cases.

An unusual cause of dysphagia: "DISHphagia".

Progressive dysphagia and dyspnoea presenting after major neck trauma can occasionally be secondary to post-traumatic inflammation and mass effect associated with a calcified osteophytic anterior longitudinal ligament, a frequent finding in diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis, though rarely enough to cause such symptoms. In these circumstances, surgical decompression may prove effective.

Early cystic thoracic cord cavity complicating decompressive surgery for spondylotic spinal canal stenosis. Case report.

This is a report of a patient who developed thoracic cystic myelopathy immediately following an otherwise successful decompression operation for spondylotic stenosis secondary to osteophyte formation of the thoracic spinal canal. As this case shows, thoracic laminectomy is not without risks, and cystic myelopathy is a potential complication that should be borne in mind when surgery for spondylosis is being planned. Cavitation of the spinal cord may be associated with trauma secondary to extramedullary cord compression.

T-plate for middle carpal and carpometacarpal arthrodesis in a dog.

Partial arthrodesis was performed for carpal hyperextension injury in a dog. T-plate application for middle carpal and carpometacarpal arthrodesis was associated with low patient morbidity and allowed normal pet activity without clinical lameness. Radiography revealed bony healing of arthrodesed joints, reactive bone formation over the dorsal aspect of the plate, and periarticular osteophyte formation. A guarded prognosis is advised for degenerative joint disease that may lead to decreased range of motion of the antebrachiocarpal joint.

Computed tomography of the lumbar facet joints.

Lumbar facet joints are difficult to image with conventional radiographic techniques. A series of 100 consecutive cases of low back pain and sciatica was examined with CT. Abnormal facet joints were found in 65. Abnormalities demonstrated by CT included osteophyte formation, hypertrophy of articular processes, articular cartilage thinning, vacuum joint phenomenon, and calcification of the joint capsule. In patients with sciatic or low back pain, CT is indicated to demonstrate treatable abnormalities of the facet joints.

The surgical approach to refractory trochanteric bursitis.

This article identifies and describes a small group of patients with trochanteric bursitis for whom all modes of conservative therapy have failed. They are treated surgically by release of the ileotibial band, removal of trochanteric osteophytes and debridement of the gluteus maximus bursae. In this series all of the patients had satisfactory results and returned to near-normal function without significant complications.

Surface erosion 4 (8%) and osteophytes 14 (28%) were also noted in bruxers. Interestingly, non-bruxers also showed osteophytes 16 (32%) and surface erosion 9 (18%), which became the point to be focused on. CONCLUSION: Condylar alterations were more frequently observed in participants w …
