Prevalence and characteristics of sex trafficking among youth experiencing homelessness: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) face elevated risk for sex trafficking due to interconnecting structural, interpersonal, and psychological vulnerabilities. Despite growing recognition of this link, regional data from the southern United States remain limited. This study examines the proportion of YEH reporting experiences consistent with sex trafficking and describes associated characteristics among a sample of YEH in Houston, TX. METHODS: Baseline data (September 2019-May 2023) from a randomized controlled trial of a nurse-led HIV prevention intervention were analyzed. Part

Fatal Administration of Propofol: A Comprehensive Narrative Forensic Review of Propofol Deaths From Accidents, Suicides, and Homicides.

Accidental death, suicide, and homicide have resulted from the intravenous injection of propofol. There have been at least 30 accidental victims of propofol self-administration; more than 75% were medical workers who chronically used it as a recreational drug. At least 13 of the 14 individuals who committed suicide by injecting themselves with propofol were either a physician or a nurse. A fatal injection of propofol was used to murder a minimum of 10 people; for many of these deceased persons, neither the drug nor homicide was initially suspected at the time of death. Therefore, the discovery

Post-traumatic stress disorder specific to parents in the neonatal intensive care unit.

INTRODUCTION: The experience of having an infant admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) can be highly traumatic for parents, potentially leading to symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Despite the significant emotional impact of the NICU experience, the prevalence rates of probable PTSD among NICU parents, as measured by validated Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, (DSM-5) self-report instruments, have not been extensively documented. The aim of this study was to address this gap. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this pilot study was to asses

Ambulatory total knee arthroplasty in a patient with cold agglutinin disease.

PURPOSE: Cold agglutinin disease (CAD) is a rare autoimmune disease caused by high titres of cold-reacting autoantibodies that cause red blood cell agglutination and subsequent hemolysis at low temperatures. Trauma, surgery, and infection/inflammation exacerbate CAD. The present report describes the successful perioperative management of a patient with CAD who underwent outpatient total knee arthroplasty (TKA). CLINICAL FEATURES: A 70-yr-old female was diagnosed with CAD in 2016 with symptoms of pain and pallor in her fingertips, numbness and bluish discoloration of her tongue, and shortness

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Musculoskeletal Disorder-Related Absenteeism Among Pediatric Healthcare Workers.

Background and Objectives: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are a leading cause of absenteeism among healthcare workers (HCWs), impacting healthcare delivery. Pediatric HCWs face specific physical demands such as lifting and awkward postures. While absenteeism rose during the COVID-19 pandemic, its effects on pediatric MSD-related leave remain unclear. This study examined MSD-related absenteeism trends among pediatric HCWs in a Romanian hospital across the pre-pandemic (2017-2019), pandemic (2020-2021), and post-pandemic (2022-2023) periods. Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective

AOA Critical Issues Symposium: Gun Violence as a Public Health Crisis.

Gun violence is an epidemic throughout the United States and is increasing around the world-it is a public health crisis. The impact of gun violence is not limited to the victims (our patients); it also extends to the physicians and caregivers who are taking care of these patients every day. Even more broadly, gun violence affects those living and going to work in potentially dangerous environments. The "vicarious trauma" that is experienced in these situations can have long-term effects on physicians, nurses, and communities. Importantly, socioeconomic disparities and community deprivation st

Unlocking Silent Suffering: Addressing the Otorhinolaryngologic Needs of Incarcerated Persons Through Carceral Health Education.

Mass incarceration in the United States presents major healthcare challenges, and otorhinolaryngology-related needs within carceral settings are underrecognized. Public health crises, as exemplified by the COVID-19 pandemic which led to over 3,000 deaths among incarcerated individuals, can intensify disparities. Both acute otorhinolaryngology conditions, such as craniomaxillofacial trauma, impending airway compromise, and life-threatening infection, as well as more chronic conditions such as cancer, sinusitis, or ear infections can lead to impaired quality of life, disability, or preventable m

Rethinking obstetric violence and the "neglect of neglect": the silence of a labour ward milieu in a South African district hospital.

BACKGROUND: Research into the mistreatment of women during childbirth has increased over recent years. Overt violence is an important focus of research, but recently there has been increasing recognition that there are other ways in which women in labour may be uncared for or even hurt. As part of a larger study focussing on staff responses to stillbirths, we wanted to gain contextual information on how high risk pregnancies are handled in general in Khayelitsha Hospital, a district hospital in an impoverished urban setting in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. This health care system

Risk factors for post-dural puncture headache following injury of the dural membrane: a root-cause analysis and nested case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Post-dural puncture headache following trauma to the dural membrane during neuraxial anaesthesia occurs in 0.13-6.5% of pregnant patients. Identifying factors beyond individual performance that contribute to this adverse event is crucial to developing improvement strategies. METHODS: We used a root cause analysis framework, in a nested case-control study, to identify associated factors. Cases were all patients who had a post-dural puncture headache requiring an epidural blood patch. These patients were matched to a random group of control patients without post-dural puncture heada

Portrait of rural emergency departments in Quebec and utilisation of the Quebec Emergency Department Management Guide: a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency departments are important safety nets for people who live in rural areas. Moreover, a serious problem in access to healthcare services has emerged in these regions. The challenges of providing access to quality rural emergency care include recruitment and retention issues, lack of advanced imagery technology, lack of specialist support and the heavy reliance on ambulance transport over great distances. The Quebec Ministry of Health and Social Services published a new version of the Emergency Department Management Guide, a document designed to improve the emergency depar
