Validation of an artificial intelligence-based algorithm for predictive performance and risk stratification of sepsis using real-world data from hospitalised patients: a prospective observational study.

OBJECTIVE: The heterogeneous nature of sepsis renders determining its underlying causes difficult, which may delay diagnosis and intervention. VitalCare-SEPsis Score (VC-SEPS) is a deep learning-based algorithm that predicts sepsis and monitors patient conditions based on electronic medical record data. However, few studies have prospectively compared medical artificial intelligence software algorithms and traditional scoring systems to predict sepsis. This prospective observational study attempted to validate the predictive performance and risk stratification of VC-SEPS for early prediction o

InfEHR: Clinical phenotype resolution through deep geometric learning on electronic health records.

Electronic health records contain multimodal data that can inform clinical decisions but are often unsuited for advanced machine learning analyses due to lack of labeled data. Here, we present InfEHR, a framework to automatically compute clinical likelihoods from whole electronic health records without requiring large volumes of labeled training data. InfEHR applies deep geometric learning through a procedure that converts whole electronic health records to temporal graphs that naturally capture phenotypic dynamics, leading to unbiased representations. Using only few labeled examples, InfEHR c

Sepsis in silico: definition, development and application of an electronic phenotype for sepsis.

Repurposing electronic health record (EHR) or electronic medical record (EMR) data holds significant promise for evidence-based epidemic intelligence and research. Key challenges include sepsis recognition by physicians and issues with EHR and EMR data. Recent advances in data-driven techniques, alongside initiatives like the Surviving Sepsis Campaign and the Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock Management Bundle (SEP-1), have improved sepsis definition, early detection, subtype characterization, prognostication and personalized treatment. This includes identifying potential biomarkers or digital si

Impact of the diabetes Canada guideline dissemination strategy on dispensed vascular protective medications for older patients in Ontario, Canada: a linked EMR and administrative data study.

BACKGROUND: The 2013 Diabetes Canada guidelines recommended routinely using vascular protective medications for most patients with diabetes. These medications included statins and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). Antiplatelet agents were only recommended for secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Using Electronic Medical Record (EMR) data, we previously found that guideline dissemination efforts were not associated with an increase in the rate of primary care prescriptions of these medications. However, this needs confirmation:
