Beliefs about tobacco, health, and addiction among adults in Cambodia: findings from a national survey.

There remains a very high rate of smoked and smokeless tobacco use in the Western Pacific Region. The most recent findings from national adult tobacco surveys indicate that very few daily users of tobacco intend to quit tobacco use. In Cambodia, a nation that is predominantly Buddhist, faith-based tobacco control programs have been implemented where, under the fifth precept of Buddhism that proscribes addictive behaviors, monks were encouraged to quit tobacco and temples have been declared smoke-free. In the present study, we included items on a large national tobacco survey to examine the rel

Electronic gaming machine warning messages: information versus self-evaluation.

Regulators have extensively used warning signs in many health domains to enhance knowledge and shift attitudes and behaviors to reduce associated harm. The effectiveness of these signs is influenced by their physical attributes and content. Gambling warning signs traditionally focus on the following: informing individuals of the potentially risky outcomes of gambling and the odds of winning, encouraging gambling within affordable limits, and advertising counseling services. The limited evidence suggests that warning signs for gambling attract attention and improve knowledge but are generally i

Current controversies in the USA regarding vaccine safety.

As a result of the vaccines discovered in the 20th Century, parents and many healthcare providers of the 21st Century have limited or no experience with the devastating effects of diseases such as polio, smallpox or measles. Fear of disease has shifted to concerns regarding vaccine safety. Scientific evidence has refuted many of the misconceptions regarding vaccine safety; however, parental refusal of vaccines is increasing. Here we review six of the most prevalent controversies surrounding vaccine safety: the proposed causal relationship between receipt of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine an

Conducting focus groups for health research among Asian communities: insights and experiences.

An exploratory qualitative study was undertaken in Luton to examine the issues that may underlie the severe shortage of organ donors from the United Kingdom's (UK) Asian population. To date, this subject area had not been researched within this sub-population of the UK. Thus, focus groups were employed as the initial stage of research to pre-test the applicability and validity of questions used in empirical studies undertaken within other cultural groups, and to allow the opportunity for new and unexpected issues to emerge. These focus groups also allowed us to gauge the response of conducting

Community knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding mosquito-borne diseases in rural Uttar Pradesh, India.

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Mosquito-bome diseases such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya, and filariasis pose a significant public health threat in India, especially in regions like Uttar Pradesh. Despite national programs, community participation and preventive practices remain inadequate. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and preventive practices (KAP) related to mosquito-borne diseases among the study population; examine the association between sociodemographic factors (education, age, occupation, housing type) and KAP levels; and evaluate the relationship between knowledge lev

Effect of Coach Feedback and Awareness of Head Impact Exposure on Practice Structure in Youth Football.

With the concern of concussion risk and repetitive head impacts in youth football, organizations have adopted rules that limit contact during practice. However, rule changes are not ubiquitous among organizations and are challenging to monitor and enforce. Ultimately, football practice activities are determined by coaches, but it is unknown whether providing objective data to coaches relating activities to their athletes' head impact exposure (HIE) would alter practice structure or help reduce HIE. This study evaluated the effect of coach awareness of HIE on practice structure over time. Head

Incorporating oral-systemic evidence into patient care: practice behaviors and barriers of North Carolina dental hygienists.

PURPOSE: Current research has reported associations between periodontal and systemic health, however, there is little data regarding how dental hygienists are incorporating this evidence into the dental hygiene practice. The purpose of this survey research was to determine what practice behaviors are prevalent among North Carolina dental hygienists regarding the incorporation of oral-systemic evidence into practice as well as perceived barriers to implementation. METHODS: A questionnaire was developed, pilot tested, revised and mailed to 1,665 licensed dental hygienists in North Carolina. Aft

Abortion care in the emergency department: A national survey of emergency physicians' perspectives.

OBJECTIVE: The emergency department (ED) is an essential setting for diagnosis of pregnancy, confirmation of pregnancy location, and management of pregnancy loss and other complications. We seek to assess emergency physicians' knowledge, training, attitudes, and practices related to pregnancy options counseling, reproductive health referrals, and provision of medical- and procedural-induced abortion. METHODS: We surveyed a sample of emergency physi

Providers' Barriers to Buprenorphine Prescribing for Cancer-Related Pain.

BACKGROUND: Full-agonist opioids are standard for treating cancer-related pain. However partial-agonist opioids (e.g., buprenorphine) are promising treatments with fewer side effects and a stronger safety profile. However, it is unclear how oncology and palliative care providers (Medical Doctors, Advanced Practice Providers, etc.) perceive prescribing of buprenorphine for cancer-related pain. METHODS: Participants (N = 42; 50% oncology) at a single healthcare system with multiple hospitals completed a one-time web-delivered survey assessing reported opioid prescribing patterns and barriers to

Physicians' Knowledge and Application of Immunization Strategies in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Survey of the Italian Group for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

BACKGROUND: No data on European countries about knowledge and application of immunization strategies in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are available. OBJECTIVES: We designed a questionnaire aimed at exploring these issues among Italian gastroenterologists dealing with adult and paediatric IBD. METHODS: An anonymous, 24-item, questionnaire was sent via e-mail to all members of the Italian Group for the study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Three sets of questions were formulated: (1) Characteristics of respondents; (2) General opinions on the role of vaccines in IBD patients; (

GPs' views on their role in cancer genetics services and current practice.

BACKGROUND: Increasing demand for cancer genetics services has necessitated an urgent review of how these services are organized and, in particular, identification of an effective role for primary care. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the views of GPs on their role in cancer genetics services and their confidence in performing that role; to assess their understanding of cancer genetics, current practice and referral behaviour; and to identify needs for information and training to enable GPs to play an effective role in these services. METHOD: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey of GPs was

Knowledge of medications for opioid use disorder and associated stigma among primary care professionals.

BACKGROUND: Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) are the gold standard. However, significant barriers limit their use in the primary care setting, including limited knowledge of the medications and stigmatizing attitudes. In this study, we assess knowledge levels among primary care-aligned professionals (PCPs) currently in practice, and whether knowledge of MOUD is associated with stigma and treatment attitudes. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: Using rosters from the state of Ohio licensing boards, we surveyed 403 physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician associates in 2022, on the mechan
