Impact of community-initiated Kangaroo Mother Care on survival of low birth weight infants: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Around 70% neonatal deaths occur in low birth weight (LBW) babies. Globally, 15% of babies are born with LBW. Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) appears to be an effective way to reduce mortality and morbidity among LBW babies. KMC comprises of early and continuous skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby as well as exclusive breastfeeding. Evidence derived from hospital-based studies shows that KMC results in a 40% relative reduction in mortality, a 58% relative reduction in the risk of nosocomial infections or sepsis, shorter hospital stay, and a lower risk of lower respiratory tract

Navigating isolation- barriers and multidimensional support needs in symptom self-management for HSCT patients within laminar airflow rooms: a descriptive qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a crucial therapy for hematological malignancies and other conditions. However, the intensive therapy and required isolation place significant physical and psychological burdens on patients. Although effective symptom self-management during isolation is pivotal, the current efforts are often challenged, leading to distress and feelings of loss of control. Nevertheless, research specifically addressing the self-management needs and barriers faced by patients with HSCT confined to laminar airflow rooms is limited. This study aimed to

Navigating benign gynecological care in a pandemic: A qualitative exploration of patient experiences during COVID-19.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore how women experienced benign gynecological care during the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Netherlands, when healthcare capacity was constrained and elective services were often postponed or restructured. By focusing on the patient perspective, we sought to identify which adaptations were acceptable, which were perceived as inadequate, and what patients considered "good enough" care during a period of absolute scarcity. METHOD: We conducted online focus group discussions (FGDs) with patients from five hospitals, covering three care pathways

Assessing the impact of day programs on individuals living with dementia and their family/friend caregivers (AIDA-DemCare): protocol of a prospective cohort study combined with a qualitative evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Persons with dementia, their family/friend caregivers, and health systems agree that the preferred place of dementia care is a person's home. Health systems have struggled to provide sufficient community-based dementia care supports, negatively affecting the health and well-being of persons with dementia and their caregivers. Therefore, dementia care and support of dementia caregivers are critical public health priorities. Adult day programs aim to simultaneously support the health and well-being of persons with dementia and their caregivers, but research focusing on these day prog

ComPrEmetidos: A Multidisciplinary Consensus to Transform HIV Prevention in Spain.

Despite progress in antiretroviral therapy and prevention, HIV remains a major public health challenge in Spain. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a proven and effective prevention strategy, but challenges in access, equity, adherence and persistence limit its population impact. Our aim was to identify current barriers to PrEP adoption in Spain and develop actionable solutions. We conducted a structured consensus process (September 2024-May 2025) with 19 experts from fields including infectious diseases/HIV care, sexual health/sexually transmitted infection services, primary care, emergency m

An overview of spider accidents in the Brazilian Amazon.

BACKGROUND: Spiders of medical importance in the Amazon region belong to the genera Phoneutria, Loxosceles and Latrodectus. Natural history data show that Phoneutria spp. occur in both periodically flooded forest areas (igapós) and non-flooded areas (terra firme), as well as in commercial plantations in the Amazon. Negative interactions with wandering spiders (Phoneutria spp.) can occur along forest trails, leading to homes, schools and workplaces. Harmful species, such as Loxosceles amazonica and Latrodectus aff. curacaviensis, are mainly associated with accidents in rural settings. METHODS:

The potential negative impact of antibiotic pack on antibiotic stewardship in primary care in Switzerland: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: In Switzerland, oral antibiotics are dispensed in packs rather than by exact pill-count. We investigated whether available packs support compliance with recommended primary care treatment regimens for common infections in children and adults. METHODS: Hospital-based guidelines for oral community -based treatment of acute otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillopharyngitis, community-acquired pneumonia and afebrile urinary tract infection were identified in 2017 in an iterative process by contacting hospital pharmacists and infectious diseases specialists. Furthermore, newly available nat

Profiles in safety: The Hospital From Home Program.

Although today's health care system has achieved unprecedented advances, geriatric adults remain vulnerable to iatrogenic complications associated with traditional hospitalization, including acute cognitive delirium, rapid functional decline, medical errors, and health care-associated infections. To improve patient safety, an organization initiated an acute hospital-at-home pilot program from June 2023 through February 2024. Building on the removal of prepandemic regulatory and reimbursement barriers, the pilot was formally expanded and rebranded as the Hospital From Home (HfH) Program. An eva

Medical planning for toxic releases into the community: the example of chlorine gas.

Emergency planning for a major accidental release of chlorine gas from industrial installations into the community is outlined for emergency services and hospitals. Realistic planning has been made possible with the advent of computer models for gas dispersion which may be used to estimate the numbers of deaths and casualties, according to their severity. For most purposes sufficient accuracy may be obtained by using a small number of computer analyses for the most serious reasonably foreseeable events under typical day and night weather conditions, and allowing for the emergency response to b

Models, implementation, and reported outcomes of social prescribing interventions: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Social prescribing has gained international attention as an approach that connects individuals with community-based, non-clinical resources to address social determinants of health and support well-being. Despite growing use across health and community systems, the evidence remains fragmented, with variation in intervention models, settings, target populations, mechanisms, and implementation conditions. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to map the characteristics of social prescribing interventions, including models, initiation and coordination settings, referred community asse

Older people in custody in a forensic psychiatric facility, prevalence of dementia, and community reintegration needs: an exploratory analysis.

BACKGROUND: Across much of the developed world, the number of older people in custody has been increasing, which presents challenges for correctional systems due to the complex social, medical and mental health needs of this subgroup, especially those living with dementia. The present study therefore aimed to increase insight into the extent to which older people in custody are (a) potentially living with dementia and (b) receiving appropriate supports/services (particularly, with respect to community reintegration). RESULTS: Cross-sectional data were drawn from a sample of 29 older people in
