Essential components in developing public policy to control viral hepatitis: lessons from Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Over 500 million people are estimated to be infected with chronic viral hepatitis with an increasing burden resulting from the infections. In 2010, the World Health Organization recommended national governments develop effective strategies to reduce the global impact of viral hepatitis. Taiwan, to support the implementation of the world's first national vaccination program, developed the first of a series of 5-year national strategies in 1982. Our study sought to identify the essential constituents of the strategic response to chronic viral hepatitis in Taiwan, which could then be

Quantitative methods used to evaluate impact of health promotion interventions to prevent HIV infections: a methodological systematic review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Combination prevention is currently considered the best approach to combat HIV epidemic. It is based upon the combination of structural, behavioral, and biomedical interventions. Such interventions are frequently implemented in a health-promoting manner due to their aims, the approach that was adopted, and their complexity. The impact evaluation of these interventions often relies on methods inherited from the biomedical field. However, these methods have limitations and should be adapted to be relevant for these complex interventions. This systematic review aims to map the evidenc

Qualitative Evaluation of mHealth Implementation for Infectious Disease Care in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) interventions have the potential to improve health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) by aiding health workers to strengthen service delivery, as well as by helping patients and communities manage and prevent diseases. It is crucial to understand how best to implement mHealth within already burdened health services to maximally improve health outcomes and sustain the intervention in LMICs. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify key barriers to and facilitators of the implementation of mHealth interventions for infectious diseases in LMICs, drawin

Integrated research: an approach suited to research in geriatric medicine.

"Integrated research" appears increasingly in the biomedical literature yet is rarely defined. We describe the concept and examine its relevance to aging research. In a scoping review, PubMed was searched without date restriction for articles whose title contained the exact phrase "integrated research". Records were charted by year, field, article type and integration dimension. One hundred and six articles (1980-2026) spanned nursing, environmental science, imaging, pharmacology, oncology, infectious disease, psychiatry, public health and geriatrics. Six recurring meanings emerged: integratio

Bridging gaps in surgical oncology research and training: the DISSECT COST action (CA24158).

Cancer surgery remains a cornerstone of treatment for solid malignancies worldwide, yet substantial disparities persist in the training of surgical oncologists across regions and countries. Differences in training duration, accreditation, clinical exposure, multidisciplinary involvement, mentorship, and research activity contribute to variation in surgical outcomes and widen existing gaps in cancer morbidity and mortality. DISSECT (Disparities in Surgical Specialization and Education in Cancer Training) is a European Collaboration in Science and Technology (COST Action) aimed at systematically

Experimental realization and synchronization of a quantum van der Pol oscillator.

Classical self-sustained oscillators, which generate periodic motion without periodic external forcing, are ubiquitous in science and technology. The realization of nonclassical self-oscillators is an important goal of quantum physics. We here present the experimental implementation of a quantum van der Pol oscillator, a paradigmatic autonomous quantum driven-dissipative system with nonlinear damping, using a single trapped atom. We demonstrate the existence of a quantum limit cycle in phase space in the absence of a drive and the occurrence of quantum synchronization when the nonlinear oscill

Saving Shared Decision-Making.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality encouraged a re-examination of the concept, process, and measurement of shared decision-making (SDM) in 2016. Progress, however, has been slow. One illustrative example is SDM's relationship with the concept of equipoise: there remains little consensus on what equipoise means in the context of SDM, creating confusion about when SDM is and is not indicated. In this paper, we describe the ways in which this focus on equipoise in SDM is counter-productive and argue that equipoise is neither a necessary nor sufficient criterion in determining the need

Diagnostic accuracy of real‑time point-of-care tracheal ultrasonography for the confirmation of proper endotracheal tube placement in neonatal acute care settings: a systematic review and diagnostic test accuracy meta-analysis.

Accurate confirmation of endotracheal tube (ETT) placement is critical in neonatal resuscitation. This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the diagnostic accuracy of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) for confirming ETT placement in neonates. We searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library through May 2025. Eligible studies included neonates (<28 days) and compared POCUS with gold-standard confirmation (capnography, chest radiography, or direct laryngoscopy). Diagnostic performance was pooled using a bivariate random-effects model. Thirteen studies (930 neonates) met in

[Evolution, controversies, and exploration of the nature of the definition of acute respiratory distress syndrome].

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a collection of clinical syndromes characterized by a variety of heterogeneous causes. It includes diffuse lung diseases of various etiologies that ultimately lead to refractory hypoxia and severe acute respiratory failure. Despite advances in research and treatment of ARDS, its incidence and mortality continue to pose significant challenges in clinical practice. Since its inception in 1967, the definition of ARDS has undergone several revisions that have generated controversy and influenced the implementation of diagnostic and treatment strategies

Behaviour change, the itchy spot of healthcare quality improvement: How can psychology theory and skills help to scratch the itch?

Despite the clear utility and transferability, National Health Service (NHS) quality improvement initiatives have yet to benefit fully from what is already known within health psychology. Thus far, evidence from established, seminal behaviour change theory and practice have been ignored in favour of newly developed models and frameworks. Further, whilst there is a growing interest in what is commonly referred to as 'human factors' of change and improvement, there is scant transferability of known psychologically informed implementation skills into routine NHS Improvement practice. The science

[Low Back Pain - Value of Prevention and Physiotherapy?].

Low Back Pain - Value of Prevention and Physiotherapy? Abstract. Physiotherapy plays a central role in the prevention and treatment of lumbar back pain. There is no clear evidence in science on the effectiveness of individual preventive measures; however, movement and active training as central elements are indispensable here. In the treatment of lumbar back pain, however, the picture is clear: while passive measures such as heat or cold applications as well as ultrasound and electrotherapy should no longer be used alone due to the lack of evidence, the combination of active exercises and pati

Artificial Intelligence in Hair and Nail Disorders.

Artificial intelligence (AI), a field of computer science, aims at simulating human intelligence with computers. Though AI has surpassed dermatologists in skin cancer detection, it still lags behind various other specialties like radiologists in broader adoption. Newer AI applications are becoming increasingly accessible. AI plays a role in various areas, such as medical image recognition, auxiliary diagnosis, and drug research and development. Dermatology has a prime position in implementation of AI in medical research due to its larger clinical, dermoscopic, and histopathological image datab

Novel malaria vaccines.

Malaria vaccines hold significant promise for life-saving benefit, especially to children who bear the major burden of malaria mortality. The RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine provides moderate efficacy and is being tested in implementation studies. In parallel, multiple strategies are being advanced to test next-generation malaria vaccines, including novel approaches that build on principles learned from RTS,S development, vaccination with radiation-attenuated sporozoites, and development of monoclonal antibodies targeting immunogenic peptides. Novel vaccine delivery approaches are also being advanc

Malnutrition assessment in patients with cancers of the head and neck: a call to action and consensus.

PURPOSE OF RESEARCH: A state of the science review to assess how nutritional status and malnutrition are defined by the community of researchers studying head & neck cancer (HNC) patients. PRINCIPAL RESULTS: In 117 publications, nutritional status was described diversely, ranging from merely one to all six of the following features: weight loss, body composition, quantity/type of food intake, symptoms impacting oral intake, inflammation and altered metabolism. Methods of assessment of each feature were inconsistent. Cancer- and treatment-related symptoms impacting oral intake were a prominent

An adaptable implementation package targeting evidence-based indicators in primary care: A pragmatic cluster-randomised evaluation.

BACKGROUND: In primary care, multiple priorities and system pressures make closing the gap between evidence and practice challenging. Most implementation studies focus on single conditions, limiting generalisability. We compared an adaptable implementation package against an implementation control and assessed effects on adherence to four different evidence-based quality indicators. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We undertook two parallel, pragmatic cluster-randomised trials using balanced incomplete block designs in general practices in West Yorkshire, England. We used 'opt-out' recruitment, and we r
