A novel association of alveolar capillary dysplasia, atypical duodenal atresia, and subglottic stenosis.

Alveolar capillary dysplasia (ACD), which is a rare and lethal congenital pulmonary anomaly found in newborns, begins its onset or causes deterioration of the infant's condition some time after birth. Various congenital anomalies in combination with ACD have been reported, except for subglottic stenosis. Therefore, we aim to report a novel association in a case of ACD with the combination of atypical duodenal atresia and subglottic stenosis. The male infant was scheduled for duodeno-duodenostomy because a double-bubble sign was observed on a chest radiograph. He arrived at the operating theate

Analysis of postoperative reoperation for congenital duodenal obstruction.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the risk factors for reoperation after initial surgical repair of congenital duodenal obstruction and demonstrate that they can be decreased with more careful attention and more advanced techniques during surgery. METHODS: The records of newborns and infants (aged 0-2 months) who had surgical therapy for congenital duodenal obstruction in the past 30 years were reviewed and analysed. Of the 298 patients, 132 (44%) were boys and 166 (56%) were girls. All patients who underwent repeat surgery postoperatively were evaluated by the reasons for surgery. The number of patients

Choledochal cyst associated with duodenal obstruction.

The association between congenital duodenal obstruction and concomitant choledochal cyst has not been reported, although duodenal obstruction is known to be associated with many other anomalies. The authors describe 2 patients with choledochal cyst with duodenal obstruction. In 1 patient, a diverticulum type of choledochal cyst was found within an annular pancreas. Cyst excision, choledochojejunostomy, and side-to-side duodeno-duodenostomy were performed. The other patient showed separated duodenal atresia and other multiple anomalies including imperforate anus. A choledochal cyst was noted at

Familial arhinia, choanal atresia, and microphthalmia.

We describe two females (aunt and niece) with variable manifestations of arhinia, choanal atresia, microphthalmia, and hypertelorism. In the literature there is only one report on this syndrome in sibs. We hypothesize autosomal dominant inheritance with reduced penetrance.

Familial jejunal atresia with renal dysplasia.

Although jejunal atresia occasionally may occur with a familial pattern, an association with renal disease has not been described. The authors report on three family members treated over two generations, all of whom had both proximal jejunal atresia and renal dysplasia. This association was most likely inherited as an autosomal dominant trait.

Duodenal atresia: late follow-up.

In this study, 41 randomly chosen patients aged 15 to 35 years (mean 22 years) were carefully examined. As primary operations there were 13 membrane excisions, five duodenoduodenostomies, 22 duodenojejunostomies, and one gastrojejunostomy. Twenty-eight patients were symptom-free, ten admitted some discomfort, three had major pains, including one with a history of duodenal ulcer. Reoperation for adhesion ileus had been performed in six patients, in the early postoperative phase in one instance. At late follow-up barium meals (N = 41) showed completely normal findings in two cases only, hiatal h

A case of single pleural cavity with esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula.

This is a report of a premature infant presenting with an esophageal atresia. At surgery it was realized that there was no posterior mediastinum and a single pleural cavity only. Other serious congenital anomalies were present. She died rather suddenly upon cessation of her prostaglandin E 1 at 34 days of life.

Prenatal demonstration of gastric and duodenal obstruction by ultrasound.

Prenatal sonographic findings in one case of gastric obstruction due to an imperforate antral diaphragm and in one case of duodenal atresia are presented. The combination of either one or two prominent sonolucent areas in the upper or mid fetal abdomen and polyhydramnios is virtuallydiagnostic of high obstruction.

Living Donor Liver Transplantation in Pediatric Situs Inversus: A Case Series and Systematic Review.

Liver transplantation (LT) in patients with situs inversus (S-I) is rare and technically challenging. The literature on such cases, particularly in pediatric populations, remains limited. Here, we report the surgical considerations and outcomes of two pediatric recipients with situs inversus abdominalis who underwent liver transplantation for biliary atresia (BA). We conducted a retrospective descriptive analysis of two pediatric patients with S-I who underwent LT for BA. Pretransplant imaging, intraoperative details, and posttransplant outcomes were evaluated. Additionally, we performed a sys

[What must the (abdominal) surgeon know about paediatric surgery - paediatric surgical aspects in general (abdominal) surgery].

Due to the advances in neonatal intensive care medicine, prenatal ultrasound-guided diagnostic measures and paediatric surgical options, conditions have been established to achieve long-term survival in newborns with severe diseases. In addition, this means that the "non-paediatric" physician can be increasingly confronted with patients who would not have survived childhood some decades ago. Therefore, the article summarises concisely selected diseases of premature infants and newborns, e. g., congenital abdominal wall defects, and outlines possible long-term consequences based on the surgical

Incidence of biliary atresia associated congenital malformations: A retrospective multicenter study in China.

BACKGROUND: Some patients with biliary atresia (BA) have associated anomalies. Our study aimed to investigate the incidence of BA-associated malformations in mainland China, and compare the results with those reported in the Western literature. METHODS: Clinical data were collected retrospectively from five medical centers in mainland China. BA patients were diagnosed and confirmed by laparotomy with intraoperative cholangiography and liver biopsy. Cases were divided into isolated type BA and BA with associated anomalies, including polysplenia, situs inversus, intestinal malrotation, and card

Surgical complications and outcome of paediatric liver transplantation: the Singapore experience.

The purpose of this study was to analyse the early and late results of paediatric liver transplantation (LT), with particular reference to complications that required surgical intervention. The charts of all children who underwent LT between 1990 and 2002 were reviewed retrospectively. Results were analysed with a minimum follow up of 9 months. Thirty-five children have undergone 38 LTs; 22 received grafts from their parents, 16 received cadaveric organs and three children had retransplantation. The ages of the children ranged from 12 to 168 months. Biliary atresia was the most frequent indica
