Visual function in Rett syndrome.

The authors examined refractive error, pattern onset visual evoked potentials, ocular posture and they performed internal and external eye examinations in 11 subjects with Rett syndrome (aged between four and 24 years) and 18 normal controls (aged between six and 20 years). Substantial refractive errors were common in the Rett syndrome group. Spectacle correction had never previously been worn and glasses were provided where appropriate. No subjects had nystagmus or optic nerve pallor and only one was strabismic. All subjects had recognisable and reproducible pattern-onset VEPs and latencies a

Multifocal intraocular lenses in refractive lens exchange: Guidelines to optimize their use and indications.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Refractive lens exchange (RLE) with presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses (IOLs) can provide high levels of … ptics or by exchange to another multifocal platform with a different optical profile, provided that refraction, ocular surface disease, posterior-segment pathology, and IOL position have already been addressed. CONCLUSION: Multifocal IOLs remain valuable in RLE, but success depends more on indication discipline and rescue sequencing than on lens marketing labels. A …

Comparison of Ocular Biomery in Primary Open Angle Glaucoma and Non-glaucoma in South West Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a public health problem in Nigeria. The number of individuals affected by glaucoma in Nigeria is much higher than the individuals known to have the disease. Ocular parameters such as intraocular pressure, central cornea thickness, axial length and refractive error have all been documented as risk factors of glaucoma especially among Caucasians and African Americans, with little documentation in Africa where there's an alarming rate of blindness. AIM AND OBJECTIVES: To compare central cornea thickness (CCT), intraocular pressure (IOP), axial length (AL) and refractive s

The relationship between corneal biomechanics and endothelial morphology: evidence from a Saudi cohort.

BACKGROUND: Corneal biomechanics and endothelial morphology are key to ocular stability, but their relationship in healthy adults remains understudied. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 122 healthy Saudi adults aged 18-40 years were examined using the Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA) to measure corneal hysteresis (CH), corneal resistance factor (CRF), Goldmann-correlated intraocular pressure (IOPg), and corneal-compensated intraocular pressure (IOPcc). Corneal endothelial morphology and central corneal thickness (CCT) were assessed using non-contact specular microscopy, providing endothel

Diurnal variations in ocular aberrations of human eyes.

PURPOSE: To investigate the diurnal variations in ocular wavefront aberrations over two consecutive days in young adult subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Measurements of both lower-order (sphero-cylindrical refractive powers) and higher-order (third and fourth-order aberration terms) ocular aberrations were collected for 30 young adult subjects at 10 different times over two consecutive days using a Hartmann-Shack aberrometer. Seventeen subjects were myopic and 13 were emmetropic. Five sets of measurements were collected each day at approximately 3 hourly intervals, with the first measurement

Predictive Nomogram for Large-Scale Childhood Myopia Screening and Intervention.

PURPOSE: To study the correlation between uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCVA) and myopic refractive error among school-aged children. METHODS: The North India Myopia study is a prospective cohort study in which school children were screened for refractive error. These children were subsequently followed up to note the incidence and progression of myopia. The methodology of the study is as previously described. Children with UCVA < 3/60 were excluded for this analysis, since they are more likely to be associated with other ocular pathologies. RESULTS: Of the 9884 children screened, 1463

[Internal astigmatism with other ocular lesions].

Astigmatism is a refractive defect whose origin is not always purely corneal, and is sometimes the result of corneal, crystalline lens or mixte contributions. The aim of our study is to report, through two cases, ocular lesions associated with a lenticular astigmatism and their evolution after treatment. In the first observation, it is a 25-year-old patient with a unilateral extra corneal astigmatism within the framework of the "tilted disc syndrome" associated with bilateral myopia. This patient has received treatment by Lasik. The postoperative course was good with a decline of 5 ans. The se

Calculations of corneal power after corneo-refractive surgery from keratometry and change of spectacle refraction: some considerations on the "clinical history method".

PURPOSE: To derive corneal power after kerato-refractive laser surgery (KRS) to be used for a subsequent intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation. MODEL: Based on the proportion of curvatures of the corneal front and back surface, the central thickness, and the ablation characteristics, we demonstrate a vergence-based formalism to derive the equivalent and back vertex corneal power before and after KRS from the preoperative measured keratometry. As a second option, we demonstrate in the paper how to derive the respective values from the postoperative (instead of the preoperative) measured ker

Criteria for premium intraocular lens patient selection.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To discuss available premium intraocular lenses (IOLs), patient selection, and important considerations for each premium IOL. RECENT FINDINGS: We review important topics and considerations for premium IOL selection: specifically, toric, extended depth of focus (EDOF), multifocal/trifocal, light adjustable lenses (LALs), and small aperture IOLs. Toric lenses are an excellent option for patients with astigmatism. However, to achieve optimal patient satisfaction, it is critical to account for the ATR astigmatism contribution from the posterior cornea and high angle alphas. Add

Sources of reduced visual acuity and spectacle treatment options for individuals with Down syndrome: Review of current literature.

Individuals with Down syndrome are known to have a greater prevalence of ocular conditions such as strabismus, nystagmus, elevated refractive error, poor accommodative function, elevated higher-order optical aberrations and corneal abnormalities. Related to these conditions, individuals with Down syndrome commonly have reduced best-corrected visual acuity at both far and near viewing distances across their lifespan. This review summarises the various optical sources of visual acuity reduction in this population and describes clinical trials that have evaluated alternative spectacle prescribing
